Mate, you made some valid points until you stated that in bold above. Freo are heads and shoulders above any club in the league when it comes to poor trading performance. Let me see Groom for McLeod, Clement for an apple core (that's two AA players so far), Peter Bell the first time, Heath Black the first time, Clive Waterhouse (NO 1 DRAFT PICK:eek: ). Do I need to go on, I can if you like?

As for us, there's really only Angwin, not drafting Pav (along with 15 other clubs including your own) and giving you Modra for the keys to an 83 Ford Fairmont. Your team has had so many draft picks that it has peed against the wall, whereas we have only ever had two top 10 picks in 14 years of football.

From memory, Modra gave us the draft pick for Stenglein which then led to Thompson so it didn't turn out too bad really

14 other clubs didn't have him in their backyard and have the opportunity to see him week in and week out, thus be in the box seat to pick him up 12 months earlier. You can throw all the "sticks and stones" you want about our results, but fact is you could have got him, but you didn't. Your lot aren't the world's greatest when it comes to drafts and trading either - any more than us. ;)

We're just lucky that Richmond and Collingwood screwed it up 2 years running and he ended up at Freo. :)

actually we have a considerably better record at tarding and drafting than you.

Agree wholeheartedly. But I guess I don't have to say the names Matthew Pavlich and Daniel Wells to show that your record ain't great either... ;)

Hey I'm not going to disagree.

However, I maintain that things like Groom for McLeod were part of the "start up" process. BAD decision in hindsight, but had we taken everyone we were supposed to have in 94 / 95 / 96 (McLeod, Farmer, Lloyd - who we never could have got anyway, depsite the popular myth...) then we would have been trying to field a team of 16 and 17 year olds...
Bell was a stupid move - but he was also short and slow and could only kick 40m (actually what has changed?? ;) ) the fact that he has been such a magnificent player is a credit to the man himself that he has so much perseverence and determination, Black wanted to "go home" (Stenglein anyone??)... Clive, well, Clive was Clive and who knows what the hell they were thinking at the time????

But I agree, in the early years especially, our record was pretty woeful....

(Perhaps the "anymore than us" line was a slight exaggeration... )

well for 1. we passed on pavlich for another very good player. a steal at 75.
and for 2. we never had the chance to draft Daniel Wells, and frankly he has been a bit of a disappointment this year.

discuss.

Yeah clubs don't have scouts anywhere outside of their home state do they?

If all 16 clubs passed on him first time around doesn't that suggest that he hadn't shown enough to warrant being drafted?

Oh, and I would have thought the McLeod for Groom trade would rank up there with the best ever

What did we do with the pick?

According to the AFL website, we took Matthew Collins (#38, 1994).

At the end of 1997 we sent Collins and Brent Williams to the Dees in exchange for one Nathan Bassett :D

So Huh, We effectively got Nathan Bassett and Andrew McLeod for Chris Groom?
That's unbelievable.
