Does Warner have to open?

I don't mind either way, I'd like to see him make it as an opener however if his technique struggles with the moving ball then moving him down to 6 to avoid it would work very nicely for him. He has shown he can make big scores when he gets in.

The guy has played 3 test matches give him a break and a fair bloody go. He has already made an exceptional 100 on an arduous pitch for batting, where everyone else failed.

My OP wasn't designed to have a go at him. Apologies if it came out that way. I was trying to find a spot to maximise his potential and protect his weaknesses. For me that spot is down the order probably at 4 but maybe at 6.

I know your post wasn't intended directly for me but for the record I wasn't replying directly to your post either only those who continue saying Warner isn't test quality etc.

I wouldn't put him down the order for the simple reason he will succeed at the top of the order, as evidenced by his stellar performance against New Zealand in Tasmania.

Any chance he could try his hand at keeping, we could have another Gilchrist. Come in at 5/ 300 and start smashing them. And if we are 5/ 50 at least he knows how to play under pressure against the top bowlers.

I really hope that when Watson is fit enough to play again he doesn't open. I quite like the potential of the opening pair featuring Cowan and Warner. I also think that Watson is better suited to playing down the order, so that he can continue to be the fourth seamer.

It's just a shame that Clarke cannot seem to bat higher than five, as that limits the selectors' flexibility with putting players in at five and six in the batting order.

At any rate, the answer is an emphatic 'yes' after this.

Cracking innings, and obviously has enough talent to play international cricket but I still don't know about opening. For every innings where he does this, there will be 2 or 3 where he holes out in the 20s and 30s because of poor shot selection early in his innings. Might be better suited to 4 or 6 when Watto is available again.

The one thing which might make Warner work as an opener is Cowan, who bats in a fashion which would make a particularly cagey England opener burst into tears and beg him to "'urry the fook oop guv." Not sure how much talent he has, but great to see an Australian opener who actually values his wicket, and having someone like that at one end frees Warner up to attack.

Must be a bloody weird experience bowling to Warner and Cowan in the one over.

Bowl 4 dot balls to Marsh and think the over is quite good. Marsh takes a single on the 5th ball. Last ball over the over to Warner - smashes you for six

Umm you guys realise Cowan was scoring very quickly for day 1 of a test match especially after a team just got bundled out very cheaply making the wicket look very bowler friendly.
40 off 58 is not slow, just looked slow coz Warner was absolutely on fire.
I thought Gillies innings where he nearly broke the record for fastest ever century was going to be the best aggresive test batting i would ever see.
I rate this innings from Warner above that.
Gilly had to go for it an had nothing to lose at that time by trying to score quickly.
Warner had no reason to score quick,India got rolled out cheaply making batting look hard which could of messed with the batsmens head an scared them to take it very very easy an lastly it was day freaking 1 still so much time left in game, there was everything to lose by playing so aggressively.
Amazing batting factoring all that in makes it best fast scoring test century ive seen.

i still see this line of thinking and there's still a lot of water to go under the bridge and we'll see where it goes...

but as i said earlier if he can make it as an opener that is a huge weapon for australia.

a lower order batsmen doing what he did today really hurts an opposition... but an opening bat doing it just completely destroys you. you can't expect any batsmen to come out and do that regularly, but even say a run a ball or near run a ball hundred (or close to a hundred) from an opener just kills a fielding team. it's so unexpected...

he's got all the tools to make as a test cricketer. if it's as an opener, then that is an even bigger bonus for us.
