No one understands how VDM and McNeill gets games. Apparently their skill of defensive running(yes running away from the ball) is irreplaceable.
You make a very reasonable point but 2 factors to consider here.

A) options to replace them aren’t exactly high. Weightman and Arty missing huge chunks of this year and Dolan not being ready yet means we aren’t exactly spoilt for choice
B) as a unit the forward line is performing extremely well and papers over their performances. Everyone knows though that Darcy, Naughton and West plus the midfield really carry the load though.

If those things weren’t factors, neither VDM nor McNeil would be getting a game right now.

I wonder which coach gave the vote to Cleary? Whoever it was he earned it.

We need to remember he had only played 7 games over 3 years before this season. He has now played 19. Plenty of good players have taken a few years to find their feet before becoming automatic senior selections.

That passage in the first quarter where he took on the Essendon tacklers (Kako in particular) and managed to break the lines (just!) suggests that he is working on taking his game to the next level. I think somebody posted here that in his first few seasons Dale wasn't the dasher we now know him to be. Cleary could be following a similar path.

A few here may be starting to re-assess their opinion of Cleary. Let's hope he does make it. He's no sure thing yet. There's certainly a vacancy there for another strong rebounder off half back. Especially one who can defend as well.

Stunned that Cleary got a coach’s vote for that game. 6 kicks off half back and didn’t have a big influence.
6 kicks doesn't sound very good but you didn't mention that he also had:
11 handballs
4 tackles
6 contested possessions

Sounds a lot better when you add those in. All career highs for him. Albeit only a 19-game career so far. Only Kennedy and West laid more tackles.

His game also included:
94.1% DE
8 intercept possessions

The 8 IPs was a game high for the Dogs. Only Redman had more, with 10 ... but then Redman probably had a lot more play down his end!

Anyway as we keep telling each other it's not just about the stats.
I still haven't watched the entirety of the game but I'll now be keeping a keen eye on Cleary when I do get to watch the rest of it!

I'd say almost certainly our coaches gave Clizz a vote, and Essendon's gave Libba a vote.

Much more probable than the reverse.

Although our tallish/utility defender role has been highly problematic this year, I reckon we've got good options making progress. It's a real growth opportunity.

I'd bet by this time next year, 2 of Cleary, Busslinger, Sellwood, Jaques or Walker will be rock solid fixtures.

Plus he was on kako most of the game I believe? Kept him very quiet if so.

I knew all of that before I commented. Having watched the game I’m surprised. Wouldn’t have been in my best 5 players on the ground, but that would be encouraging for him.

I’d like to give Cleary a pat on the back too. I was walking my dog through Whitten oval on a weekend before the season started and he was out there on his own doing a session. No surprise to me that he’s probably having his best season and appears to be on an upward trajectory.

People complain that Cleary is vanilla when he plays safe. people complain when Cleary try’s to take the game on. Poor bloke can’t win
I think we should absolutely stick with him. He’ll probably never be a star, but he’ll be a perfectly valuable role player on not big contracts. The moment I was sold was his attack on the football in the first North game when he got taken out by Archer.

I would like to take a moment to renounce this post as the worst kind of boneheaded reactionary post game hot takes.

I don't know why (well it's obvious really) but it wasn't sitting well with me. So I decided to do something that I rarely do, what a replay and do it with a mind to reevaluating my initial thoughts on and why I felt compelled to rush to post. And when I did I found my take to be wr...wro...wron...wrong.

There I said it.

Busslingers kicking though not as aesthetically pleasing as JO'D was constantly more effective if somewhat safe compared to JO'D or the panic inducing nature of Jones'. This may be a consequence of him playing a whole checks notes, 2 games. Did he get led to the ball 3 times and did each occasion result in a goal to his opponent? Yes. Was there much he could do about? Not really. On each occasion the ball was delivered with lace out precision. Even if one of those was a flukey kick out of mid air.

Now, is he the long term answer to our obvious full back issues? Dunno. Should we tip him out this week in favour of Jones? Absolutely not. Finals or not. We need to take a longer term view and see if and how the combo of Busslinger, JO'D and Lobb can work. Because going back to Jones at this point in his career would be well...Pointless.

Please down vote this post.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Completely agree with this. Maybe my bar is too low after that scarring year of combinations of 3 out of Jones, Keath, Bruce and Gardy kicking the ball out of D50 each week but I don’t hate the ball in his hands.

I like Cleary but if it was Scott who gave him the vote maybe he mixed him up with Bramble 🤔

Yeah I guess so.
I mean they have this annoying habit of both wearing the same coloured jumper so I can see how somebody could easily mix them up.

I’m assuming Scott not being the brightest bulb 💡.

Scott to assistant: “Gotta give one more vote - oo was that bloke clearing out of their backline?”

“Brambling? Bleary? Cleary?”

“That’ll do. It was one of those.”

Well that’s just completely wrong.

The opposition was insipid. You can’t just look past the clear certain issues because we beat up on a terrible team. Some of these guys will be exposed next week against GWS.

McNeil will certainly hold his spot. I won’t disagree with that. I’m most concerned about Cleary, Baker & Busslinger against the GWS forward line.
You've got your role in the club confused.
Apply for a position, otherwise this is just cheap, ego talk.
