Cleary finished with...

13.8 rating points (ranked 6th among Dogs players and a career high)
94% disposal efficiency (100% kicking)
8 intercepts (team high)
6 post clearance ground ball gets (game high)

Okay it was against Essendon but he was far from poor. First Crack had us ranked 18th for D50 ground ball gets this year, so having someone who can actually win the ball at ground level in the defensive half is worth persisting with.

Agree with others mentioning Busslinger's need to hit the gym and build up upper body strength. Weitering and Barrass are not quick key backs but they are strongly built and are excellent 1 on 1. I think we have a player if Buss can add a few more kilos. Yesterday he was caught out a few times regards pace but it takes some time for players who've played a lot of VFL to adjust to the pace of AFL level. Deserves to be persevered with, he will not get better in the VFL.
100%

I wouldn’t necessarily say he plays like a small but he definitely needs to build up his strength for defending 1v1. But in saying that there were a few contests with Caddy where he used his body well. But against wright etc he couldn’t match their body work and strength
Buss is 21 and still developing and Wright near 30 wouldn't he? He needs to get stronger to make it as a KPD at AFL Level I feel like he can get there but will be a slow burn

Think the criticism of Buss and Cleary is a bit harsh.

Cleary is probably our best lockdown mid sized defender tbh. With the drop off of Duryea we don’t have a lot of other options and we need that type of player to allow Dale, JJ and Bramble to be offensive. He’s probably going to be a C grader but you can’t have a team of A graders, you need some role players.

Imagine a 2nd gamer not being the finished product already and needing to develop some deficiencies in their game. I thought Bus was solid, reads the play well, got caught out a couple of times against wright. Was pretty even against Caddy. Based on his previous GWS game there is a lot to work with there.
Cleary = Shane Biggs?
Busslinger = Roberts?

There is our 2025 unbeatable BACKLINE!

I would persevere with Buss. He needs to develop physically at this level. He looks scrawny atm. And with Gardner and an out of form Jones you need to persevere. I would look for a mature defender or two in the draft. There could be VFL level or WA or SA level players around. Our defensive depth is poor.

People complain that Cleary is vanilla when he plays safe. people complain when Cleary try’s to take the game on. Poor bloke can’t win
I think there are ways to ‘take the game on’. Playing on, dropping the ball, taking an eternity to dispose of it when two opponents are on your heels…it wasn’t textbook stuff.

I’ve been critical of him but I don’t think there’s many better options. Happy for him to play the season out and hopefully he can show some improvement.

This would be all well and good if not for the fact that this is the same Busslinger we've seen for 50 games in the 2s where he has shown next to nothing to suggest he's AFL-level capable beyond racking up some cheap possessions in D50.
Just not true at all. I'd only have to go back one whole week, where he was a clear BOG in the VFL.

I could also easily argue that his games in the 1s this year have been better than his two competitors for the same spot, Jones and Gardner.

Think it worked out to being $900k per year too which in hindsight is a good deal.

If Naughty was out of contract at the end of 2025, WCE, Saints etc would be lining up to offer 1.5 mil per + over about 8 years, so yes i'm very happy we signed him up to a long term deal for unders. Especially with how the cap is rising...

Agree. Given some of the guys who have left us, I’m more than ok with anyone who wants to sign on long term to have their whole career with us.

Just watched the replay after being at the ground to watch in person last night.

While we won very easily, the problems with our shaky defence were still on display in that game it’s just Essendon are so bad they couldn’t take advantage and we had so much of the ball ourselves that we didn’t give them as much opportunity. But I have zero confidence in our defensive back 6 to hold any team, and GWS are an aggressive team with a really great full forward in Jesse Hogan. They are also generally a very accurate team. So if you give them opportunities they will make you pay.

I don’t think anyone we have is going to stop Hogan and Cadman. Lobb will give his all but JOD and Buss are going to be way out matched. And Cleary is too shaky still against good teams. He panicks too much. Bramble has actually been pretty good lately so hopefully he can hold up. So our best chance is to turn it into a shootout and hope that Darcy and Naughton and Westy give them just as much trouble but they have Sam Taylor who is probably the best one on one defender in the League so I expect he will nullify one of our forwards.

I know we have a good recent record against the Giants but I am really worried about our ability to withstand their scoring power. When we turn the ball over it’s just way too easy for other teams to get it forward and then we get beaten one on one routinely in defence. We don’t put enough pressure on up the field either, it’s not just our defenders that are the problem, our midfield don’t help enough.

I hope I am wrong because this game is critical if we want to play finals. And like everyone I am sick of the narrative that has been built around us that we can’t beat any of the good teams, so it would be awesome to change that narrative this coming Thursday. We have to bring more pressure than we have in any game previously this season and help our defenders if we are to be any chance. And we need Big Tim to have a huge game and give our midfield first use of the ball. If we can do those two things then we have a chance.

Doubt we play finals anyway... but they had all those guys in Canberra and we should have won by 10 goals

They are playing quite a bit different now compared to back then. Also not sure if Finn Callaghan played or was in the form he is in now, ditto for Cadman. They are playing much better now than back then. Our defence needs some help and protection from pressure up the ground if we are to have a chance. But if we can pressure them and force poor entries then I think our own forwards will give them plenty of trouble.

Cleary looks good against shit sides, everyone knows this... When we play a side with pressure, he will cough up minimum 3 goals off his own boot. Don't see why we are talking this up, the bar is so low we are commending him on beating up on essendon.

They had them all..

Exactly. Even Timmy’s deal is unders regardless of what we think of him. Ed, Darce too. List in great shape contract wise.

What's up with Busslingers 30 meters slow and low kicks to teammates under pressure?

His action had me scratching my head as to who it reminded me of, and then it came to me. Zaine Cordy.

That is sub-optimal.
I would like to take a moment to renounce this post as the worst kind of boneheaded reactionary post game hot takes.

I don't know why (well it's obvious really) but it wasn't sitting well with me. So I decided to do something that I rarely do, what a replay and do it with a mind to reevaluating my initial thoughts on and why I felt compelled to rush to post. And when I did I found my take to be wr...wro...wron...wrong.

There I said it.

Busslingers kicking though not as aesthetically pleasing as JO'D was constantly more effective if somewhat safe compared to JO'D or the panic inducing nature of Jones'. This may be a consequence of him playing a whole checks notes, 2 games. Did he get led to the ball 3 times and did each occasion result in a goal to his opponent? Yes. Was there much he could do about? Not really. On each occasion the ball was delivered with lace out precision. Even if one of those was a flukey kick out of mid air.

Now, is he the long term answer to our obvious full back issues? Dunno. Should we tip him out this week in favour of Jones? Absolutely not. Finals or not. We need to take a longer term view and see if and how the combo of Busslinger, JO'D and Lobb can work. Because going back to Jones at this point in his career would be well...Pointless.

Interesting reading comments about people knocking a 2nd gamer in Buzz, yet McNeil, who's achived nothing in 60 odd games, "ran really well".

Anyone would be better than McNeil

My thoughts too 100%.
Give the guy a decent string of games in the firsts , learn at the cold face and see how he goes.
