Autopsy Dogs beat Saints

Nah I took my kids to that game. Their first live game, interstate trip. Picked the Saints as thought it a likely win. Not only did we lose but Wallis broke his leg and Redpath did his knee. Let's just say it was a quiet and somber train ride back to Footscray. The train was packed (with dog's supporters) but you could hear a pin drop 😩.

The season turned out OK though! 😁

Just shows that setbacks and a series of them can either make you or break you.

Clearly in 2016, that backs against the wall, us against the world, 'why not us?' mentality worked. Hopefully we harness some of that for the rest of the year.

Taking Darcy's injury out of it, no matter how difficult that is, there was a hell of a lot to like about last night. Some really top shelf performances - so much upside.

Buss was prolific, was among our best but disposal could do with tidying up and could be better one on one, but not really fair to expect him to be the perfect player before debuting.

MUCH worse players have got games this year throughout the AFL. He’s due for the shot, he’s ready.

Smith was very good once again. It’s entirely possible English goes forward more and we bring in Smith but that’s less likely I think. He’s close to the best state league ruck this year, has improved rapidly, but think given how long Buss has had to wait, I’d be surprised if Smith does get his shot this soon despite being close to ready
fantastic news regarding Smith!

English does well forward often and matches Darcy for height, so not much would change if another ruck came in and he moved forward.

Hard to put much faith in debutants changing things much but would love to see them get a run soon.

Got home last night and couldn't bring myself to post, absolutely shattered for Darcy and the club. Still shattered today it feels like a 10 goal loss 😭

20 centre clearances to 6, 69 inside 50s to 31. That is as bad a midfield smashing as I have seen in a long time, and saints mids have matched if not beaten some gun midfields in giants, cats and port in these stats. Absolute credit to our midfield on a sensational performance.

Oliver G are there stats on how many times teams hot the post, I'd be amazed if we are not in the top 3, was it 6 last night?

Despite the loss of Darcy, there's enormous room for optimism. We flogged them last night, largely without Sam and we had great performances all over the ground.

Thought our 23 were great last night, have been critical of our "bottom 6" for several years but that group lifting is a major reason for our improvement. Not the same 6 from week to week but just showed a lack of depth.

Reading the comments, surprised Bailey Dale hasn't been mentioned that much. Thought his run and precise kicking really hurt St.Kilda though the corridor.

We have a core group of quality 1st and 2nd year players that are driving our improved bottom 6 - Getting excited with Sanders and Freijah now, Davidson has improved us on the wing, Dolan and his neat disposal, Gallagher has taken a step up (not last night obviously).

Loved the "Libba" chase and chant, but also loved JJ's long goal on the run, shades of 2015 and 2016, hope he stays fit.

Hoping for a Darcy miracle, what a bloody kick in the guts for him and the team.

Bont has always done this well, but his 'coaching/directing' on the field last night was so good. Hopefully his time spent in the box during his layoff has enhanced this further.

Just gives you more confidence and means Libba can just do his thing (and he delivered in spades last night)

Also, it's not as though he's missing from 50 out on the boundary. He's missing sitters, he's kicking the bladder of the ball and hardly scoring doing those ridiculous around the corner kicks from 20 out directly in front.

I'm no coach, but surely, surely, you would be telling him to practice, practice and practice some more, it's just insane how bad some of his misses are. Almost to the point where someone blindfolded would probably still kick a goal.
I’m no expert, but the way he drops the ball onto his foot looks all wrong. Like he’s serving it up on a platter instead of guiding it down to his boot.

Williams very instrumental getting us going as well. An underrated cog in the team.

Our younger brigade are an exciting bunch.
Hynes showed enough glimpses to say he may become a fixture earlier than most of us thought.

Of the extended midfield rotation, Liber is the only one who really doesn't have a genuine off-ball position, but can pinch hit at HF.
Bont, Treloar, Richards, Kennedy, Freijah, West, Sanders can all impact in other parts of the ground. (Hard to see someone like Garcia break into that rotation tbh, even with Treloar still out.)

Unfortunately he was practically invisible in the VFL today again.

Won’t be surprised if Buss gets his debut finally, and we move both O’Donnell and Khamis forward. Not great, but desperate times
I think this is the best case scenario.

Lobb is too important at CHB.

Buss looks like he can step straight in - has absolutely demanded his spot.

I’ve been a supporter of Buku going forward, but he looked lost tonight.
Think JOD plus Buku to the forward line and play the decoy for a more centralised Naughton, with Buku giving ruck chop out.

Long trip to attend again yesterday, highs and lows obviously of team form and Bont return vs Darcy injury. And didn't get home until 2am. But a few quick notes (apologies if already covered):
  • if Macrae's impact is limited, Saints midfield is virtually non-existent, hard to believe they've won games this year
  • seemed our entire bay was barracking for a Lobb goal in q4, alas, it wasn't to be
  • just watched some highlights, not generally a fan of Hamish Mc, but his comment that "Bont can boil water just by looking at it in the form he's showing" is as accurate as any other analysis of the captain!
  • Z.Jones and B.Hill are no-trick and one-trick ponies respectively, surely Saints have youngsters who provide more? Hell, I'd bet Zaine Cordy could play out of position in either/both of their roles and contribute more!

Will be interesting how Bevo reconfigures the setup without Sam.D, but given his apparent rejuvenation in 2025, I'm betting he's got something up his sleeve.

Also interesting how Naughton became more of a focal point after Darcy went off, yet he played well last year up the ground. I know there's the possible lingering of off-season glandular fever (and alleged relationship woes), but hopefully he's on track to get back to previous form, even if gradual.

Go Dogs, woof, woof, WOOF!

Re-appoint Bevo now. He has the team playing for each other. You can see it the immediate acknowledgement of the team for the one percenters (the tackles, the smothers, the chases). There may be a better tactical coach this season but he is number 1 at getting his team to perform under adversity even the losses we have been in all the games. No Bont to round 6, no JUH, no ADZ, No Cody now no Sam.

The injuries and JUH issue will get us in the finish, but it will not be Bevo's fault.
That's one of the most Optimistic posts from you Optimistic Dog, is your Optimism on the rise?

On a serious note you make some very good points
