The weird part is Josh Bruce has a very set in stone routine.
Ball held over the kicking leg from the beginning of his run in, held low so it minimises the ball drop, kicks at reasonable pace from the set shot.

It's like they don't even train goal-kicking together. Naughton's ball drop is notably higher than Bruce's.

Bruce kicking goes to pot as well if he misses early.

I think they're working on the idea that Weightman's was low impact (dropped to the ground) while Stocker's was negligible (stayed up and took a swing). Seriously s**t move either way.

Lots of things wrong with Naughtons kicking. When around the 50 arch he kicks as hard and he can and through the ball. For short shots he tries to guide the ball onto his boot kicking less than 100%. That's his biggest mistake and goes against what all the stars have done, Lockett, Dunstall, Hall, Acker and dead eye Dickson would all kick through at post height even from 30 metres. When you try to half kick the ball you are more prone to off the side of the boot. Most of his misses especially the last one in close was off the outside left of his boot. Ball drop placement and eventual drop should both be lower. Hopefully the club are working on it with him, as even before sunday night he has missed far too many in close goals (less then 30m).

I'm against them determining penalties depending on the result across all indiscretions...but it is particularly ridiculous to talk about 'negligible' or 'low impact' when we're discussing one guy deliberately swinging at another guy's nutsack.

Side note, my favourite part of the Wilson strike was how genuinely happy Weightman was to have goaded him into taking a swing.

You’ve constructed lots of statistically valid and logical arguments. I accept the validity of much of what you have posited. I still don’t accept that having 30 kicks after match practice with a specialist kicking coach isn’t worth the effort. Nor do I accept a position that something most athletes do (extra work to refine their skill set see Steph Curry and other examples above) will have any material difference on Astro’s ability to run out games. The sports scientists have reached peak control freak status in that regard and it’s frankly utter BS.

I actually find the idea that practice kicking may cause injuries rather bizarre. in sports like baskeball shooting practice is an essential skill. in soccer (football) players like messi, ronaldo et al. continually practice free kicks, penalty kicks, corner kicks, setup kicks, etc. so why not practice goal kicks. bizarre, totally bizarre...

A big part of goal kicking is mental and it’s difficult to recreate that in practice. It’s for the same reason top golfers still miss putts

Maybe the answer is not thousands of shots but working with someone who helps your mental game

Absolutely agree, though I hope he remembers to keep doing all the hard things that are currently making him successful at the moment. Just hope he doesn't get ahead of himself

Dunno ... but he went at pick 9.


Pretty sure that if he'd been playing as a KPF with similar playing characteristics he would have gone a few picks higher. Good tall defenders are important to recruiters but they are easier to find and generally don't generate the excitement that KPFs do. (Which just underlines how unusual our current predicament is.)
