Autopsy Dogs discombombulated by Mt Buller - 115 to 65

Let's be honest here. This is and for a number of years has been a team that lacks the drive and skill set to knuckle and down and stay in the game when it starts to slip away from them. Once Max inevitably decided enough was enough and took control of the game. What did we do? We continued on with our determined strategy of proving to all the football world the very definition of insanity by sticking with the one paced centre combo of English, The Bont, Macrae and Libba. It was clear as the view from the top of Mount Everest on a sunny day that Max was spoon feeding his dynamic duo the ball out wide and that none of our centre combo had the speed to go with them. And here we found ourselves once again at purgatory station station going nowhere but with our thumbs wedged tight up our collective arses.

Did Beveridge switch things up and rotate any of Lobb, Bruce or even Darcy into the middle? Nope. Did he bring some counter pace into the middle with Treloar or Smith. Nope and ******* NOPE! Did he do anything to counter a problem that we knew we were going to run into at some point given how their big 3 in the middle dine out on us every time we play them. NOPE!

It really is tiresome how this side can just drop its bundle whenever there is a momentum swing in a game. However, its not nearly as tiresome as a coach who hasn't addressed this obvious problem over the past three years and just doesn't have any answers when it inevitably happens.

We're front runners who have all of the resilience of an ice cube in the Sahara, but none of its ability to spread.
Nailed it.

If we're gonna play 4 tall forwards then we're gonna need small forwards who put on a ton of forwards pressure. This is how our smalls ranked for tackles last year:

Rhylee West : 3.8 tackles a game
McNeil : 3.4 tackles
Weightman : 1.9 tackles
Vandermeer : 1.8 tackles
Scott : 1.3 tackles
Hannan : 1.1 tackles

And guess which 2 Bevo picked...

Also I wanna give Baker a chance but the Dees have the best talent ID and coaching atm, so them delisting him is a bit of a red flag.

His pressure was supposed to make up for his poor disposal and decision making but 1 tackle for the game is just not good enough.

PS. Pickett and Chandler had more tackles between them than ALL our forwards combined (8 and 7 tackles each)

I think we can consign the 4 forward thing to history already.

Our diabolical ability to retain the ball inside our forward 50 was an issue last year. Tonight the difference was wider than the Grand Canyon and looser than the rules of a Thai whorehouse.

Yep it was a massive issue last year. Response: add another tall forward. Perplexing.

Has there been any news about Jones?

Hoping it's precautionary.

Even St. Kilda with all their forward line woes will be able to kick a winning score with Bruce and Keath as our key defenders 😬😬😬

has Alex keath got vertigo..... I have never seen a guy go downhill as quickly as him...

Tough night. Looked right in it for long stretches. Hard to stomach conceding so many easy goals from centre square and D50 after it’s been such a known issue for so long. Melbourne are very good and if there is an upside then it’s that they really did not look better than us for long periods. They’re more efficient and that was a tough watch.
That period in the 2nd quarter where we dominated and kicked 4 or 5 points in a row. Then they get there first inside 50 and bang, goal! ffs

I think Bevo is a great coach and tactician but his team selection can seriously get stuffed.
He displayed no tactical nous tonight.
None.
No moves, no change in centre bounce setup after half time, no attempt to counter Petracca or Oliver.
I think he's over-rated in that regard. He had a plan in 2016. He had a plan against Melbourne in one game last year. Otherwise?

For 12 months they’ve played like a side that doesn’t genuinely believe in the plan or that their coach is going to pull the right levers.

Didn’t get to see much of the game but the parts I saw it looked like we were haunted by some of the same issues that we have had for the last couple of years.

Poor ball use forward of centre and especially delivering inside 50.

Inability to stop frontal exits out of centre bounces placing our backline under pressure.

Have we gotten better at defending transition at all? Didn’t see enough to judge.

We don't have any natural and aggressive small forwards to make the structure work. Four talls can work if they had better delivery, actually moved around creating space, and had genuine smalls under them. Call Picketts hit on Smith dirty all we want. But the fact he applied a lot of physicality was awesome. Along with his speed, skills and constant in your face pressure, it shows what we are lacking.

Weightman is a small who tries to play tall, and rated average in pressure last season. Jones is a skinny kid still a bit off it despite a good preseason. West is an undersized inside mid, who does apply pressure and the odd goals, but he goes missing after a good few minute period which is what people hang on to. Clarke is a rookie. We fill our forward pocket with midfielders, that lack pressure and clean crumbing skills, with a natural read of the play.

I'm willing to give it more time before writing it off. But we need Weightman back soon at least.

The bad:
-Lobby is a bust. Absolute waste of space
-English is not an A-grade ruck by a long shot
-Darcy is 3 seasons away (been saying this all pre-season)
Jamara playing like a millionaire

The good:
Naughton took a few good marks
-Bruce didn't look horrible down back
-Libba

p.s. I was at the game pretty sure Treloar did a slight high hammy in the last few mins
English was one of our best

Compare the pair.

Their transition was like a game of chess.

Ours was like watching a blind man play checkers whilst wearing oven mitts.
