Interesting stat, our percentage is the third best to miss finals with since Geelong in 1932 and Essendon in 1963. Those two instances occurred in the 12 team comp with a top 4. Both teams made finals the next year Geelong finishing 4th and Essendon 3rd. Geelong made the Prelim and lost to minor premiership Richmond. Essendon went out the first week. Hopefully this may point to a better season next year.

It's now officially THE highest end of season percentage in our 101 completed seasons.
(Even in years like 1985 where we beat Demons by 120 and Beasley had multiple double figure goal scoring games, we finished round 22 just over 120%.)

Breaking records in meaningless, non-finals years... it's the Bulldogs way. ☹️

If you watch the replay we gave up at least 4-5 goals from inexcusable basic errors. Not punching. Mis judging the flight of the ball. Playing loose on their forwards. Not being clean with our hands Lobb was responsible for about 3-4 himself.

The ball didnt bounce our way yesterday.
Happens sometimes. Marks were dropped and easy goals missed. Players were nutmegged by weirdly bouncing balls which let Freo in for easy goals.
Same number of scoring shots.
Sad to be out but not too disappointed, didnt expect to go deep (but wouldnt have been too surprised if we did - Im an optimist). I was disappointed we didnt pick Adz, roll the dice ffs, if we lost he was gauarnteed a rest anyway.
We have discovered some players this year who Im super happy about, Doc, Freijah stepped up, Croftys got game, Jedds good, Dolans gonna be a player etc
We have one glaring gap, if we get Silvagni we'll be going a long way to fix that. I vote to throw the bank at him.

I swear if we get pipped by Collingwood for Silvagni I'll go nuts. We need to be right in his ear, right now. Just get it done Dogs. Then go and get Butts.

He can't pass a medical and has played half a dozen good games as a defender in 10 years

It's Jack not Stephen

Silvagni can hardly get out on the park. Feel like he is forever injured.

Butts I can get behind but not sure he is much better than what JOD / Buss will be able to produce after another pre-season.

So what collingwood is going hard after him we should be too

What have we got to lose? Honestly, what have we got to lose? Our defence is a dumpster fire, so it can only get better. I'll take Silvagni on one leg. I'll take a 31 year old Vlaustin. Whatever, just anything to stop it leaking like a sieve in crucial games.

You could have Andrews Weitering Wilkie and you're not stopping yesterday,

The ease the ball transitions against us is the main issue

We were the best defence in the league last year when we had decent structure

I'm not sure where we're getting the logic that defensive talent wouldn't have helped us?

Lobb lost 4 of 6 one-on-one contests directly. Logically better defenders in the purest sense of not losing one-on-one contests would have only lost 0, 1 or 2 of them?

Alex Pearce lost 3 he would be our best KPD by a country mile

Silvgani isn't his father and is an injury prone player pushing 30 with half a season of form as a defender pointing out he isn't going to magically fix our poor structure is fairly logical

.... which Alex Pearce's loss of 3 (from more than 6 contests mind you) was still a better game than Lobb's, so he owuld have improved your point.

I'm not saying Silvagni is the answer - his form is not proven as a defender over lots of games and seasons - but this idea that it's all tactics and not the players in defence is a bit weird. We can measure that in statistics especially as Lobb lost 4/6 one-on-ones and the league average loss rate is 27.2% (so had Lobb even lost 2/6 it would have been a below-league average performance).

How can you say it's not tactics and use Lobb as the example when last year Lobb lost 13% and this year it shot up to 30%?

Lobb had a poor game no doubt but to suggest that the ease of which Freo moved the ball forward played no impact is silly

Not the second coming, just a building block. Gotta start somewhere.
Whilst a solid player, I'm not too sure he improves us. We desperately need a number 1 defender to bump JOD & Lobb down the chain and allow them to play the roles their more suited to.

Silvagni is good but I feel like Sellwood could play a similar role for a fraction of the cost.

Does Jordan Croft play as third tall forward, or do we turn him into what could be an outstanding tall backman. He has outstanding attributes plus the pedigree to be a dominant tall backman. At 200cm, very quick and agile I think he could be just what we are looking for. Trouble is he could also be very good up forward, so it is bit of play Peter to rob Paul. Guess it depends on who we recruit. I know one thing Busslinger is not good enough. Lobb maybe on the way down and as promising as JOD is as aerial threat either (mark or spoil) he is slow to recover when it hits the ground and not sure about his footy smarts,

I don’t know if it has been posted on here but no crowd figure from yesterday’s game in today’s paper or AFL website match report. Anyone know it? It looked mighty full and sounded so from where I was sitting.

Perhaps relying on a 31 year old to be the future of our key defence was always shrouded in risk. Perhaps his form last year would not hold up with a bigger sample size (given his lack of training and development in that position it was hot form that was not maintained with long-term development etc.), and perhaps the fact that he's getting older as a player is not the answer.

I have very minimal confidence in Lobb being a very good key defender, and I doubt he is as good as his average of his overall 2024-25 form in defence in 2026, which is cause for concern.

So when we had better structure conceded the least amount of points in the league and his loss % was 13 it doesn't count but when we alter to an poor high press and leave the front of every stoppage open and players on the outside it does count and Rory is the issue not the set up around the ground?

But we have to update our priors?

Why should we count Lobb's 2024 form as part of his expectation for 2026, but not his 2025 form? Isn't the more recent the form, is the more relevant it is?
