He can't pass a medical and has played half a dozen good games as a defender in 10 years

It's Jack not Stephen
Yeah I heard he failed the medical. Doubt we will persue Silvagni. Will be a waste of time

But we have to update our priors?

Why should we count Lobb's 2024 form as part of his expectation for 2026, but not his 2025 form? Isn't the more recent the form, is the more relevant it is?
You count both,

In 2024 when we had a good defensive structure he was elite in 2025 when the ball came in easily he struggled

Bont to CHB and Darcy to FB next year, f*ck it. Naughton and Croft are too shit a kicks, let’s f*cking stack our defence Bont, Darcy, Lobb, Dale and Williams, all elite ball winners and users, turning our defence into attack. We’ve got Richards, Libba, Kennedy, Freijah, Sanders, Treloar, Garcia, West to roll through the guts - Crofty, Naughton, West and Weightman is enough fire power up forward. We have proven time and again that all out attack is not the answer - let’s give all out defence a crack next year and find some things out.

I admire the Boldness. However, I don't think I can get behind Sam Darcy migrating from the forward line. We can discuss that as an option when Naughton puts together a complete season of in-form Football.

Keep it simple -- Croft starts down back Rd 1

Freos score of 69 pts from defensive half was their best since 2010. Wow. If that doesn't tell you our defensive system is completely cooked nothing will.
The good teams scored heaps from turnovers, or defensive 50 chains against us. That shows, whilst our defenders are poor. Our structure was much worse.

Also, Bevo pointed out in his presser that they knew coming into the game Freo were much more physical and stronger. But my question is, ALL through Bevos tenure, we have had players who never seem to put on much size, cannot stick tackles, easily bumped aside in the hips at marking contests. Why?

Fast and clean ball movement, and physicality/high pressure rating is what most premiership teams display. We keep making the same turnover based mistakes, year in and year out. But more so have seldom been a strong and physical team. For a team of largely light weights, they haven't really had much speed or agility to their arsenal either, which is something that is sacrificed a little if one puts on too much weight. Though we have addressed it in recent offseasons the lack of leg speed.

But physical strength has always been a weakness of ours. We normally look like boys playing men, vs the best teams over the years.

The ball didnt bounce our way yesterday.
Happens sometimes. Marks were dropped and easy goals missed. Players were nutmegged by weirdly bouncing balls which let Freo in for easy goals.
Same number of scoring shots.
Sad to be out but not too disappointed, didnt expect to go deep (but wouldnt have been too surprised if we did - Im an optimist). I was disappointed we didnt pick Adz, roll the dice ffs, if we lost he was gauarnteed a rest anyway.
We have discovered some players this year who Im super happy about, Doc, Freijah stepped up, Croftys got game, Jedds good, Dolans gonna be a player etc
We have one glaring gap, if we get Silvagni we'll be going a long way to fix that. I vote to throw the bank at him.
Silvagni worries me bc of injuries. any other backmen available? gorilla types.

If I was a nutritionist I'd get Darcy, Croft and English on the most extreme mass building diet I could get them on, English needs some serious mass on him so he has the strength over the ruckman, he gets bullied by Gawn and Nank types (in their prime, even Grundy destroyed him who is very similar in profile)

Get Croft to get some mass on him and do a preseason with the backs, yeah it robs Peter to pay Paul but Darcy and Naughton as the two talls, with Westy as a crumbing forward who can play tall was the best the forward line has looked in years when Naughty got back into having fitness and form.

Darcy just needs another 5-10kgs on him so he can really bully his opponent more then he already does

Croft needs to be more like Naughton tbh. Yes he may struggle vs Gorillia defenders. But his leap, pace and agility are his strengths. Even if he was moved back, I see him being another interceptor which we have a few of. Not a lock down the Curnows and Camerons of the league type, which is what we need.

Silvagni can hardly get out on the park. Feel like he is forever injured.

Butts I can get behind but not sure he is much better than what JOD / Buss will be able to produce after another pre-season.
What you do in your spare time is up to you

How many years we been saying English needs to put on size, it never happens. Ever.

Only thp

Building size needs to be a gradual focus over several years especially for immature bodies like Darcy and Croft. Trying to make significant gains in a single pre-season not only compromises speed and mobility but also increases the risk of joint injuries and stress fractures from excessive loading.

I know attempting to theorise butterfly effects when analysing losing games of footy is a futile exercise but this play early by JOD is just eating at me way more than it should. It's just such a baffling error so close to goal.

[PLAYERCARD]Shai Bolton[/PLAYERCARD] was coming off his worst game of the season so giving him any confidence so early is the last thing we needed.

I really need to stop trying to apply counterfactual causality to sports...
It's going to be a long off season.

And they'll just put on fat if they try to put on mass too fast

I'm not sure any backline in the league would have changed the result of this one. This is squarely on coaching and the lack of pressure from our mids and forwards. Our structure is so piss poor, everyone runs forward as soon as we win the ball or it is somewhat contested (not even necessarily in our favour) so much so that as soon as the opposition have it they are 1 possession away from being completely out.

And our high press is an absolute joke. All the opposition forwards have to do is stay 5m behind their man and they have half a field to run lead back into, or lead wide or stop and prop or do whatever the hell they want because there is zero pressure on the ball carrier and half a field to kick into!

They're actually well known as a side that struggles in transition , and at scoring over 100. All the noise in the week was that they were going to turn the game into a dour struggle.
I guess we got ambushed, Bev.
Again.

What is the lesser of 2 evils being embarrassed in the last game or the first final. I guess this season we would have played the suns at home in the first final you would think we would win.

However, after giving them a get out of jail free card all season because of their close losses, this was blown up on Sunday. I will not trust this team until they really earnt it. We would more than likely been beaten by the Suns which is probably more embarrassing.

Does Jordan Croft play as third tall forward, or do we turn him into what could be an outstanding tall backman. He has outstanding attributes plus the pedigree to be a dominant tall backman. At 200cm, very quick and agile I think he could be just what we are looking for. Trouble is he could also be very good up forward, so it is bit of play Peter to rob Paul. Guess it depends on who we recruit. I know one thing Busslinger is not good enough. Lobb maybe on the way down and as promising as JOD is as aerial threat either (mark or spoil) he is slow to recover when it hits the ground and not sure about his footy smarts,

Id like to see more of Croft in the forward half - with his running ability and height will be a crazy matchup for opposition taking into account they still have to cover Darce and Naughts. And you can bet anything he will play 2nd ruck when he bigs up.

We need a key defender who is strong 1:1 as a primary attribute. Can we find one of those in a state league?

It should not have counted - Jackson touched the ball AFTER the siren went - the ball is dead immediately once a forward touches it after the siren.
That's not quite right. It doesn't go dead when it's touched - it goes dead when it is propelled.

If either team had punched the ball and created extra momentum, then the ball is dead.

The man on the mark touching a kick for goal after the siren doesn't end the play.

I'm not sure where we're getting the logic that defensive talent wouldn't have helped us?

Lobb lost 4 of 6 one-on-one contests directly. Logically better defenders in the purest sense of not losing one-on-one contests would have only lost 0, 1 or 2 of them?

70 players had 20+ 1v1 defensive contests this year, we had no one in the top half of the table in terms of percentage lost, Cleary was our best, followed by Lobb and O'Donnell. Overall, we finished 17th for percentage of defensive 1v1s lost...
