Nothing can prepare for taking a doggie to go the rainbow bridge.
Take a dog bed or blanket to keep your doggies comfortable.
It sux making the hard call and saying goodbye.

we’re doing it at home for her own comfort.

Our poor 10 year old girl has been sick for a month now with Cushings, pancreatitis and arthritis which we have been medicating for the pain and had 3 of her 4 steroid shots to help with arthritis. To me it finally looked like she was showing signs of improvement but a couple days ago my brother found an infection on her this week that spread so fast to the bone it’s only going to get worse. I’ve been balling my eyes at work with sunglasses on for over a month and i’m unsure how i’m going to handle putting her to sleep on saturday. It was my brother who rescued her 8 years ago and even more distraught then i am.

It’s the hope that has always caused me the most pain. i will attach a photo when i get home because it keeps saying file is too large.

I’m very sorry you’re going through this.

We had to put one of our dogs down last year after receiving shock news that she was terminally ill.

Her passing was one of the most painful times of my life. I’ve had immediate family members and friends die and it was less painful. I know other people that have felt the same.

We had her cremated and had her ashes placed in a nice wooden box. We built a little shrine to her with her collar and other pictures. I guess it helped us to feel like we’d honoured her memory in some way and provided some structure in saying goodbye.

Otherwise, I don’t have too much practical advice. I still think about her everyday. Maybe there’s some comfort in knowing that your grief is very normal. In my experience, it sucks but you learn to live with it.

Have had to do it twice. The two worst days of my life. I can offer no advice except know that you're doing the right thing and that your dog is grateful for the wonderful life you've given them.

I like this. I tell myself that we gave them a great life and they were our best friend. It was a good deal.

Gorgeous girl.
Damn, this is gonna be hard, and sad.
2 weeks ago I had to put my 17y.o. Honey down.
She also had Cushings, and a very long list of health problems.
In fact it would be quicker to list her bits that were healthy.

Everyone deals with loss differently. I’ve been told it’s best to go with the flow with whatever you are feeling.
I still have Honey’s water bowl and dog bed out, don’t feel like putting them away yet.

Unfortunately I’ve found the hardest and saddest part is getting used to not having them around, especially when they have been around for a long time. But it actually gets slightly easier each day.

And yes along the lines of what Beerfish said, try to take comfort in the fact that you gave them the best life possible.
All in all, having them in your life was an awesome experience, we were lucky, and the positives should definitely outweigh the negatives.

it’s almost time but she loved my brother so much. When inside her eyes would light up just hearing him crank his own room’s door open knowing it would be him coming out. In her younger days outside, she would jump on her kennel to see into his room and slowly ruined his fly screen with how much she wanted to be with him 😭. We’ll be burying her in one of her favorite sun baking spots in the backyard. There’s just so many spots that remind me of her, especially outside to the point i’m too emotional to go outside cause it will hurt trying to find her.

I can take a bit of solace watching her get much needed rest/sleep between 3am and 6am friday morning. She just seemed at peace as opposed to when she’s awake where she’ll cry/squeal in low pitch voice for someone to console her. It just ****ing sucks that it’s out of our control when it comes to aging regardless of what the vet or we tried. She would have turned 11 this month.
 
I lost my boy Smokie last night. He hadn't been well for a few days, not eating and just laying around. Last night my other dog, Sage, woke me up around 11. Smokie was having a seizure. I called the emergency vet and rushed him there. After examining him the vet told me that he had a bad kidney and that sepsis had set in. He said that if he were a young dog he would suggest surgery but as he is 15 he doesn't think it would be worth putting him through that. So I made the heartbreaking decision to have him put to rest. Now he is playing over the Rainbow Bridge, reunited with Jack who I lost about 18 months ago. Play well my boys.

Sorry to hear about this, losing them is the worst.
So the other one woke you up to let you know his mate wasn’t well?

Devastating news. Sorry for your loss brother. Such a beautiful baby :heart:.
 
We lost our JR, 2am Saturday morning.
He was in great health, but he'd been briefly passing out, when exerting himself, over the past two weeks. Scans and tests revealed Hypertension, but they couldn't pinpoint what was causing it, as there's nearly always an underlying issue. He started breathing heavily on Thursday, so he stayed at the Vet hospital overnight, in a kind of oxygen tent. Further testing revealed an infection in his lungs, which could have been the underlying issue, though it also could have been a coincidence. They were keeping him for a second night, but we got a call at 2am - his lungs were failing and he was suffering a series of heart attacks.
We got there in about 5mins, but we were too late.
The care and comfort he received was first rate and we are eternally grateful for that small comfort.

My old dog is over 15 years old and has a bit of dodgy hip so her rear legs slide out a bit on the floorboards. Other than that she is going well! I’ve seen a few things like rose hip and salmon oil to help with the joint. I spent a lot of money tisay on a tub of Rosehip powder and a pump pack of oil to hopefully help with the old joints. Has anyone played around with any of this or have any suggestions on what works, good products etc?

My old girl is 14, both back hips are poor. I give her hip and joint powder with her dinner. she moves slow but doesn't seem to cause as much an issue as it used to. She'll run around with the younger dogs at the park for a bit too before she's worn out which isn't long these days. She used to lick and naw at on of her hind legs and hasn't done that for a long time now.

The powder is in a red satchel called petz park. I also used to give her a hip treats which didn't seem to do much, but she loved them as a treat.
 
For no apparent reason one of my dogs dug this hole. He’s not finished either

Update on Roy’s hole. His entire body easily fits in the hole and he’s started to dig a cavern. I can’t wait for the stalagmites to form.
