This will be way too obscure for some I'm afraid, so I'll provide a few clues.

1 Seagulls legend
1 player who is nearly a white maggot
1 player who shares an AFL team nickname
1 player who shares a name with a 300 game veteran
1 player to have a 'farmer in him'
1 player who liked Royce Hart
1 player who has something unusual in common with Brad Hardie
1 player who played 1 season at Footscray in between several at another team
1 player who once racked up 44 kicks for Geelong (in one match, not over a career!!)

I'll need to think about these and most are a bit hard for me. But my first attempt at a few:
1: Terry Wheeler?
2: Barry Round?

In hindsight, I'll change the first 2. I now think Ian Hampshire had moved to us by 77 so Bluey for No. 1.
(I thought 'inglorious' was a bit harsh for Terry anyway).

And for 2, I think Barry Round had left then so I'll move Terry Wheeler to number 2.

I'm struggling now but Gary Dempsey must have been on one of the cards - clutching at a Polly Farmer reference or the farm at Lara.

Or maybe Kelvin Templeton is a better choice for this one given Hart moved him to CHF in his Brownlow year of 1980 and he was an absolute superstar that year.

Jeff Gieschen - not sure when he played and he certainly didn't play enough to warrant a footy card picture. Maybe he was there as one of the ones you were meant to trade.

Given my answers (the eventual ones that is where I had more than one stab at it), and whether they are the right or wrong answers to WWB's original question, what numbers did they wear? I can recall some quite easily, some are a bit vague, some downright guesses from somewhere in the dark recesses of my memory, and one I have no idea.

Any corrections or help on these?

A few more numbers to try to remember:

Given Fat Pizza's answers would mark me as 7/10 with Gary Dempsey in the wrong spot and 2 others I just didn't get, that suggests 2 more names to find numbers for. And I have no idea on these but I'll have a shot anyway:

Colin Dell (12?) and Ken Newland (20?)

And some players from my earlier aborted attempts at answering the original question:

I'll go with Fat Pizza on all but Colin Dell. I think that Ian Salmon was a farmer of some sort. Then again maybe Fat Pizza has the cards.

Well guys, I'm staggered. Trust everyone who does the cryptic crossword to end up on the Bulldogs board. But we are an erudite lot Even Fat Pizza!

1. Bernie Quinlan...yes, too harsh a description of Terry Wheeler K9.
2. Terry Wheeler...1986 GF v Coburg, Wheeler v Cleary, simply spine tingling.
3. Jeff Geischen...umpy's advisor
4. Stephen Power...an easy one
5. Ted Whitten Jnr....yes, BUT.............

7. Kelvin Templeton...got it k954, Royce won him a Brownlow!!
8. Gary Dempsey...half a mark FP, you didn't show your working out Both Gary and Brad had encounters with a fire and suffered severe burns. This is why Brad always played in a long sleeved guernsey, and why Gary sounds like an Australian Gus Mercurio when he talks - his larynx was badly injured.
9. Ken Newland...Andy Preston played for the doggies in 1986.

I must admit to making a faux par. There were in fact 11 Footscray players to feature in the 1977 set & Ted Whitten Jnr. was one of them. BUT he was not the player I had in mind. The clue is relevant for another player. WHO???????????

My weak spot is definitely player numbers...In fact, numbers period. I can recall EJ Jnr wearing 22 and Templeton's 31.

And #18 for him if I recall correctly.
