Doing an "Embley"!!

Over last few weeks some have mentioned players that they think will do an "Embley", ie improve out of sight between this and next year?

Vicki was the latest one that mentioned Glass doing an Embley and I do not see this out of the question and I promise not to be too hard on you next year if WRONG!!!

My personal opinion is that one of the following three players will have a breakthrough year next year. Two have been mentioned before and one may suprise few people.

1) Cox

Mainly because he is a highly skilled, relatively mobile and very flexible big man. I really value the way he not only uses his height but also his brain to beat his opponents.


2) Lynch

I am an unashamed fan of Lynch and am a firm believer that if he is given a genuine shot at CHF he will be a 10 year player and a potential AA. His skills, talent and decision making are very good bordering on excellent. Only doubt is whether he has sufficient pace for CHF, I think that he does and that based on his decision making and reading of the play he can always outbody his opponent just because he will get himself into better position.

3) Humm (I am sure this will suprise some)

With Read gone I think that this is the make of break year for him. He reminds me of Read with better skills and more pace. He however is not as muscular as Phil which may be a slight drawback. He is a courageous player who will always make a contest and can be played as a small backman or a tagger through the midfield. Overall I think he will be groomed to take over Braun's role within next few years.

Sampi's already good enough!!! Glass needs to do an Embley!!!
Seaby can't really, coz he's a newbie! And why wasn't Lynch used this season??? I think Doogs is a better asset to the Eagles than him. He's taller, faster and very accurate from outside 50

Judd and Sampi are already very good players - just have to produce it on a consistent basis.

If Gasper can stay fit he will be a superstar, in every game I have seen him play live he has played well and works very hard off the ball, and is tall enough to pinch-hit in the ruck. I think MacDougall is in the same category.

Glass and Humm are the question marks. I am not sure either one is good enough. Glass is a stopper and that is it. Humm is a tough nut but his disposal is not comparable to our current crop of midfielders.

Seaby will hopefully get a run next year, anyone who was at the WAFL Grand Final will tell you he is a natural tap ruckman - probably just needs a good pre-season in the gym.

And finally Lynch. I am not sure how to tackle this subject. How he was not given a run this year I will never know. I think if he doesn't get game time next year he will be on the way out. Which is a shame because we will neve know if he could have been FF or CHF.

Staker could be the wildcard ... he moves very well and has great hands.

Lynch definately has the pace required to be a great CHB. Wasnt he an underage national champion at the 400m track event?

Depends on your definition of 'an Embley'. For my mind, the thing that made his turnaround remarkable was that he'd already been in the system for a few years to the point where you'd expect him to have done most of his development, he was getting substantial game time, and it just looked as though he was really really crap. The turnaround since then seems to have been entirely caused by a change in attitude, because he's always had the physical tools.
I'm sure Sampi, McDougall, Staker and Co. will improve quite significantly this year (my tip; watch Sampi in 2004- he has superstar level athleticism, skills and footy brain), but none of that would really be as astonishing as Embley's development this year.

So, based on players who fit that criteria, what about Trent Carroll? He's perhaps the most disappointing player on our list, in that he really isn't lacking in physical ability, speed, size or strength, he just seems to be a Trent Croadish headcase, who is consistently crap, and has been written off by all sane eagle supporters.
I've also heard a few whispers that his off field attitude is rather similar to Embley's a year ago. Like Embley in 2003, this year is probably his last chance, and you could expect Worsfold to get in his ear this off season about whether he wants to play AFL footy or not.

No, but he was an outstanding rower when at Aquinas, in fact may well have been the youngest to have ever rowed in the first eight.

Well im gonna stick with my guns and say Damien Adkins will "do an Embley" and improve out of sight next year, he certiantly didnt do much this year but he showed he MAY be able to do it with a few patches here and there. I think with another pre-season under his belt he can come out as a totally new player and be a real asset to the WCE. If he doesnt though he'll be gone.

With the demise of Read we need to find ourselves a speedy Back Pocket to play on those small goal sneaks. I think that Adkins will have to redefine himself as a defender if he is to become a regular player.

I have always been impressed with the abilty of Travis Gaspar and how much better we are as a Team having him at CHF. So, I will stick my neck out, and hope he stays fit, and predict he will do an Embley.

What we are identifying here is someone who has undoubted talent but for some reason or another has disappointed us. In this case it relates to Gaspars ability to stay out on the park. I hope like hell he can. He would transform our team.

To me he would be as influential as Scott Lucas is at Essendon. No Superstar, but does some great things and brings other players into the game by the way he plays CHF.

If Gaspar stays healthy then he is the odds on favourite to do an Embley. Selwood hasnt been in the system long enough and being really disappointing season after season to qualify in this category but I still think he will get more games than we expect and will do well. Has all the tools.

My tip to do an Embley is in 2004 is Humm-dinger.

Humm is three years in now and really, has only shown glimpses of being a AFL calibre player. He's had some memorable games where his tenacity and fierceness at the contest shine through but generally he's played 1/2 a game here, 1/2 a game there, back to the Royals for 4-5 games. On these counts Humm qualifies as a "before" candidate to do an Embley.

Like Embley has done in 03 as a tall wingman / floating forward I think Humm can fill a void in our team in 04. The toughnut role recently vacated by Phil Read. Read too has had his problems getting on the park in the last few seasons but I still advocate that our team needs a bit more hardness around the contests as well as in defence. I think Humm can do it for us. He's hard as a cat's head.

What will precipitate this metamorphisis? Two things:
1) Hard work. Humm is not known to be a track slacker or anything like that (to my knowledge at least) but I think the skills require a bit of work over the summer. Kick a lot of footoes each day. Practice the kick under pressure, being chased, getting pushed. Unfortunately Hummy can give them a bit of a spray at times. Polish the skills and work hard over the summer Jezza because 04 is going to be your year.

2) Confidence baby confidence. I think Hummy is comfortable at WAFL level - a bit too comfortable. I want to see that desparation to play the top level but not to the point of pressuring yourself to perform. More pressure than you need is a recipe for disaster. What you need young Jeremy is a shot of confidence. I think it must have been early in 2003 that Embley really realised he was putting it together, week after week, and he never looked back. I don't think Embley ever doubted his ability, though I think in Humm's more recent games he might've - which in turn puts to pressure on. Get off to a good start Humm and watch the confidence soar.

That is probably the biggest set-up come 12 months time I've ever written, but still you've gotta have a go. I hope it works out Jezza - the eagle's faithful are cheering you on!!!

I was thinking similar things when Phil Read was delisted.

Except for "He's hard as a cat's head". How hard is a cat's head? I would have thought it's fairly fragile.

We all pray that Gaspar does an Embley in the sense of staying on the field and contributing for just about a full season.
