Dom Tyson 2018

There's no way jack puddings like Balic, Stretch, AVB and Maynard are going to push Tyson out of the team. What a ridiculous assertion.

He's a frustrating player, because he was better in 2014 AND he can kick, just with no consistency to it. He's what I'd call a lazy kick.

But he's best 22 any day of the week and twice on Sundays. I'd argue he's even in the Top 10. 10th in the B&F this year in what was a shit year for him, 3rd in 2016, and 2nd in 2014. That's 3/4 top 10 finishes. But yeah, Balic. LOL.

Balic and AvB can do something that Tyson can't and that's play forward. Maynard may well be a better inside player than Tyson and Stretch is better outside. That's Tysons issue, he's just OK at everything and to be honest if I was coach I don't know if I would pick him
Harmes kicks with no consistency, Dom can't judge the depth of his kicking and if AVB and Maynard come on next year Dom could be in some trouble.
10th in the BNF isn't impressive when you placed every game almost considering how Gawn Hogan Watts Viney Jones all missed chunks of the season.

He can’t kick unless he completely changes his action. Drops the ball way too high and will never have consistency in his disposal because of it.
He reminds of Cameron Bruce when he kicks but worse, Bruces kicks always looked slow through the air and were often spoiled.

Yeah Bruce had a similar action. Tyson will never be close to A grade but he needs to focus on kicking more goals, he was good for a goal every 2 games in 2014 and 2016 but isn't consistent.

Would like to see him learn to play half forward. In his first season with us he was a goalkicking midfielder, a legitimate threat from stoppages inside forward 50. The problem with this idea is Melksham, ANB,
Petracca and Harmes have played very well in that position and short term Tyson would be a downgrade.

He's kicked some big goals for us over the years but overall he has way too many 20 touch, 2 tackle game so where his impact isn't noticeable. Whilst Viney can influence the game through his pressure and ability to tag + his speed, Tyson rarely impacts the game unless he is winning clearances.

If he went to Gold Coast or North he'd average 25+ touches plus and look a million bucks like Jarryd Lyons looks for the Suns and Cunnington looks for the Roos. Both very good but not A grade, neither is Dom. At the Dee's Tyson looks like Miles at the Tigers, very good when we have no depth but because of their one dimensionalness they look average compared to other more versatile midfielders.

That being said, ability to win the inside footy is a seriously underappreciated ability. You can play as beautiful counterattacking football like the Crows or beautiful outside footy like Freo can with the Hill bros, Pearce, Tucker etc. but if you can't get your hands on the footy you can't win a game of footy.

I think Dom could do with either a change in position in JLT or the VFL to see if he can remind everyone why he went pick 3. He should be a very natural footballer so if he can add some precise kicking or bring back the fifty metre goals that he had in his first season he's got a spot in the centre square of this Dee's side. Jordan Lewis a great mentor for Tyson to model hisgame after, not the most athletic when the Hawks did their three peat but his kicking, abiding to the system and general game smarts helped the Hawks out unquantifiably in their three peat and Tyson can do the same for us IMO.

Worst case scenario we ship him off for a late first rounder or second rounder next year.

He would want to have a reasonable year then. At present Tyson is barely worth a late second rounder. He is slow. Hasn't always been slow (at GWS he looked explosive), so perhaps he can improve on his pace somehow. Needs to.

Wouldnt think so mate - underrated player Dom.

Underselling his inside work here - what has maynard, Balic or AvB ever actually done?

Tyson can buy time on the inside, not a heap can do that

Oh yeah credits in the bank for sure but AVB can go forward and take a mark and kick a goal and his forward pressure is good pending injuries.
Balic is just as likely to be delisted but can play forward and Maynard had 20 odd clearances in his VFL semi final and whilst again he might not do anything its another guy who does Tysons job.

Tysons inside work is good but with Petracca spending more time this year and added pressure from the above plus potentially even Brayshaw he needs to add more to his game because modern footy demands that if you spend all of your time in the midfield you would wanna be better than an OK player.

schmuttt fact above him winning 60% outside footy represents the coaching staff trying to expand his role yet he went backwards trying to do it because he isn't an outside mid. Top 10 in the league for clangers is usually reserved for the blokes who win it at the source under heavy pressure and belt it forward not guys who should buy time.
He's not in the first 10-15 selected for mine which means as every season goes past we are bringing in guys who could replace him.

I rate Tyson. And for some reason he reminds me of Chris Heffernan. I think it's because they are both a little gangly and they have / had similar kicks. Some are precise bullets, while others are random shanks that still look gorgeous as they travel through the air, and into the crowd.

Was hoping he would be a star, but turns out he is just a solid B grader. Can't have 22 superstars in a team though so he is still useful.

You're either grossly exaggerating draft picks or grossly underrating Tyson. More likely both.

We're not trading him out for pick 35 anytime soon. Why would we?

I wouldn't even trade our shitter regular players for a pick in that range. And yes I'm aware of the Watts situation and no I'm not pleased with it.

Nah, Tyson is too slow. It is a shame, I think he has reasonable smarts, and I think he looked quite sharp off the mark at GWS, but at Melbourne he has been too slow. Good first year, solid 2nd, but unfortunately for you blokes he has regressed. I probably wouldn't even take him at St Kilda - which is saying something because we are bog ordinary. Dom Tyson is Casey level. He is just too slow for AFL IMO.

I'm one of his biggest downers but you are taking the piss if you don't think he's AFL quality. He averages 25 touches at AFL level easily and kicks goals. He walks into half a dozen midfields at least probably more.

When a St Kilda fan is potting your midfield you know they're taking the piss.

I heard an interesting thing the other day about how you shpuld work on your strengths, not your weaknesses.... because its your strengths that drive you forward and make you special.

I dont care that Tyson is slow. He just needs to compensate by making quick smart decisions, executing them to a high standard.

So if i were him id work on that to emulate 2013-2016 Lewis

So you're saying he shouldn't work on his kicking? Goodwin should not allow Tyson to leave training until he hits a dozen targets in a row. In an era of football where teams are so good at scoring on turnovers, players like Tyson just kill your side. So many people were scratching their heads about Gibson getting delisted from the Kangas. Exactly the same situation. Teams would allow Gibson to get the ball because they knew he'd give it back to them more often than not. Tyson might be able to find the ball ok, but his turnovers are far too costly. If he doesn't sharpen his kicking up, players like Stretch, ANB, Balic etc will take his spot next season. It is a very big year for Dom..

Is Dom Is No Good. He is slow. His kicking is shit, and he has very few defensive instincts. His one solid year happened to be when he was playing big minutes on the ball in a woeful side. So basically he could play freewheeling unaccountable footy, rack up 25 and kick a goal or two because the opposition didn’t give a shit. I just don’t see a good role for him in the team.

Come on mate he wasn't even solid in 2015 but was great last season. I think you can only argue Steven and Ross in your current midfield crop would be better than Tyson. I like Acres and Dunstan still gives me PTSD from around one 2014 but those guys have yet to obtain the numbers that Tyson's been churning out for the last 2 seasons in a better midfield. If Koby Stevens and Jack Steele are making your best 22 as of now you guys have no right to pot our midfield. Mav Weller, Nathan Brown, Josh Bruce from your current team would also be stalwarts of our VFL side yet they're fairly firmly entrenched in your best 22 from last season.

Not far from the truth tbh. Dom will always be an attacking midfielder, but in today's game where pressure is king, does he provide enough two way running for the side? Goodwin just cut Watts for being a lazy campaigner, so Dom needs to lift in this area as well or be up for trade end of next season. His sole focus over pre-season should be improving his kicking and pressure acts. Dogs and Tigers just won unexpected premierships by applying pressure and hitting targets, something Dom doesn't do well at either...
