The trade will get done. Just waiting on who will blink first at the moment.

My money is on Essendon on the final day having an epiphany that they must pull their pants down, bend over, and cop it sweet.
I cant see that happening.

If Essendon show that we are willing to accept a subpar trade then it opens the door for other contracted players to demand a trade and other clubs will never again offer us equitable trades if they know that we will just bend over on the final day of trade week. Would rather hang onto paddy and get nothing for him to make a statement to other clubs than acccept the soft trade.

Or on the other hand, if you don't them you are sending messages to players that you are a terrible employer and won't get players wanting to come to you or sign extended contracts.

Maybe because of what's gone on Essendon are making sure they make a statement, but that doesn't really help Paddy move on in life. I can't understand why Essendon just wouldn't want to make these things easier on people rather than drag it all out, the entire foot community is over it. It's all going to go the way it's going to go so why delay it all further?

Do you think Hird will be there next year? I can't see it, just for the Essendon brands sake, it all needs a fresh start whatever you think happened....

I get your point but also believe that there would be plenty of essendon players who would sympathise with Paddy's current position and would be rightly annoyed that your club hadn't done what's best for him and also having a player on your list who simply doesn't want to be there anymore is far more counter productive.

These are exceptional circumstances though, one day, and we all hope it is very soon, these ASADA allegations/penalties will be over and it will be back to business as usual. The longer it goes on though, the more chance players will use it as an excuse to get out. The fact that the players have held on this long shows that most of them are not out to screw Essendon.

Generally speaking the person who has the best alternative to an negotiated outcome is the person who comes out in front. On a serious level I don't blame Dodoro for holding out for the best deal possible. Why should he trade now? He doesn't have anything else planned just waiting. By trading now what does he gain? An hour before the deadline or hearing it's a different story.

Luke Lowden getting a medical at Essendon according to SEN
3 way trade of 17 & Lowden to Bombers, Newton to Hawthorn & Ryder to Port would be a good outcome for all, you'd think the Hawks would love to add another talented lefty to their onball brigade.

So your statement is "we are Essendon, this trade week is no different from any other. not unique at all and we will behave the same way next year." Is that it?

If Paddy wins his case those affected by your club's actions can all walk anyway and you still get nothing.

If you let Paddy go and other players stay even after receiving SCNs and serving bans you have the "you didn't use the clause last trade week, why are you complaining now" line. You also buy time to get all those expensive lawyers together with the players and come to a reconciliation of sorts and draw a line under your past actions - further negating "The Clause". You start rebuilding internal culture and removing the toxic people who led you to this place.

It has to start with your leaders saying "I/we did a bad thing". The fish rots from the head though.

Either way, what legal angles you players might pull at next year's trade week what bloody statement you think you need to make to next year's traders is a bloody million miles from the main things you ought to be worrying about.

I see your point, but at the same time, I'm not sure that it's completely credible given the ASADA situation. My opinion has always been if a player wants to leave, let em go. Having a player that doesn't want to be there does nothing for a club. When you look at the Ryder situation, take out ASADA, and he wouldn't be leaving in the first place. It's a very unique situation. Anyone saying "well he's contracted so if no deal is struck, we'll keep him for next year" is kidding themselves. The bridges between Ryder and Essendon are burned, there's no going back.

I'm not trying to say that 17 is a great deal, I think it's unders but not by a ridiculous amount. 17 and 35 is imo a fair trade when you compare it to other similar type trades in the past 5 years (for instance, Jolly went for 14 and 46).

By dragging it out Essendon aren't really making any statement as such, they're just looking like fools. Asking for players like Wines, Wingard, Hartlett etc has made them look like idiots to everyone except the diehard Essendon supporters who are in a Dodoro state of denial. If there was no ASADA scandal, then yeah, I completely agree that Essendon should be holding out for more, and possibly risk losing him for nothing. Port did the same thing with Nick Stevens a decade ago and I personally agreed with it. That being said, the ASADA stuff does exist. Any player who wants to leave for reasons other than ASADA aren't going to be in a situation where the nominated club will try to pull Essendon's pants down and get said player for nothing. Ryder is in that position though, so you can't compare the two. Giving up Ryder for nothing would absolutely be pointless, given that such a scenario of what has played out the last month, is incredibly unlikely to ever happen again (I don't believe that any player can really pull the ASADA card after this season, it will likely be all over by the middle of next year anyway).

Didn't we all know at the start that his would go down to the final few hours of the trade period? Be patient.
We knew that it would drag out. We have Gorringe in the wings and that seems on the back burner awaiting Ryder. I would say we give Essondon to 10:00 am Wednesday then it goes of to arbitration to effect a trade. If no outcome by 10:00 am Thursday, we are to complete any outstanding deals and let Paddy take it to grievance and hope we get him for free. End of story.

That is more than a fair deal for Essendon, make this happen PAFC.

What's in it for Newton? Goes from a fringe midfielder at Port to an even further fringe player at Hawthorn (albeit more likely to get a go once the Hodge/Mitchell/Burgoyne types retire in 2-3 years) - would he agree to it?

That really does have a different meaning these days.

When you sign Luke, make sure it's in blood. They may take your soul as insurance during your tenure there as well.
But make sure you get your own doctor to extract your blood. Don't want anyone else sticking needles in you.
