Powderfinger made it due to one song on a movie soundtrack.
Powderfinger was already pretty huge by the time Two Hands came out. Their songs "Pick You Up" and "D.A.F." were played to death on radio back in 1996. Both were top 20/30 singles and both were top 10 on the Triple J Hottest 100. The album "Double Allergic" went to number 4.
They followed this up with their best album: "Internationalist" which went to number 1 and won Album of the Year at the ARIA awards. "The Day You Come" was awarded Single of the Year and was also voted top 10 in the Triple J Hottest 100. "Passenger" was another big single off that album. Belter, Already Gone, Don't Wanna Be Left Out, Good Day Ray… Nah, that was a top album… I was a fan at that stage.
I suppose they were always pretty bland and radio-friendly, but I agree with you, they were horribly overexposed after the release of "These Days" in 1999. They became irritating and easy-to-hate with crappy songs such as "My Happiness", "My Kind Of Scene" and "(I've Got You) On My Mind" getting played everywhere.
D.A.F. and The Day You Come are good tunes and hold up pretty well.
