I reckon a quick search would have found about 30 threads answering most of your questions which seemed to be asked in varying ways every 6 months or so.

Which always go the same way....

Non believers ask believers to answer a series of questions, which they stupidly do, which is then followed by page after page of nonbelievers ridiculing the answers and railing on believers over and over, while believers try to stand their ground.

Hasn't either side of this argument realized....

1. People are entitled to believe whatever they want no matter how stupid anyone thinks it is.

2. There is nothing either side is going to say here that is going to change anyones mind.

and 3. This argument can never be won. There are always more than a few posters who think they can claim victory, but the honest truth is that no one on either side can no matter how convincing their arguments are. The only way we are going to find out who is right and who is wrong is to die.

I know people like to have things to fire up about, but geez, can't we just leave each other to our own devices on this one? It's getting old.

Agree.

Playing pin the tail on the Christian is for the intellectually lazy.

It's a bit like fighting your grandmother with a Howitzer.

Re: So you believe in God . . .

It generally degenerates into one though.

Diablo, you're right, no atheist should propose that we ban silly beliefs. When someone believes in something though, they generally believe in it for a reason though, as though they are spurned on by some argument or something they believes gives them legitimacy, and generally people when they believe, act as if it is knowledge. I know I get frustrated at people (and myself for doing this) when they don't have any real good reasoning behind their arguments. No atheist says you should be thrown into prison for having faith, but that it should be displayed for what it is, faith, not reason. Considering theists are a good sport usually, often jump at the chance to debate atheists and often provide their own proofs for god, which then surely can be allowed to be picked apart, I doubt they can cry foul too much.

Re: So you believe in God . . .

So we're not discussing religion in a religion forum cos it degenerates into arguments?

Not sure what playing pin the tail on the Christian means either. Just want a snapshot of what christians actually believe.

True this.

"I'm not an atheist, though, because the belief that there is no God only mirrors the certitude of religion. No, I'm saying that doubt is the only appropriate response for human beings"

Gee, didn't take long for this thread to be derailed.

A lazy caricature of atheism.

Shame. I thought Maher was better than that.
