Having a dog of a day. Optus NBN been down on some sites including BF.

Because I could surf, lots of sites, news, AFL and others, thought it was my computers so have been checking my virus checker, settings etc and couldn't find anything wrong. Went to the Optus site but their pages were down to. Then checked their twitter account and it seems they have been having problems all day and still not fixed. Seems to be with accessing server sites in the USA? Didn't really understand it.

Only way I got on now is through: https://proxy-nyc.hidemyass-freeproxy.com using a US site. Just for future reference if anyone else ever has the problem. Or if I had a VPN, could have gotten on through it as well.

It’s been a sad sad day for me.
I have turned to the dark side.
I’m agreeing with Robbo!
Umpires are sacrosanct. You can’t call them cheats on the field. You can’t overtly disagree with them on the field.
Thousands of dollars in fines are appropriate.
Why? Because such dissent works it way to junior levels. And junior umpires are treated like junior players see AFL umpires are treated.
Would love to see all players shake umpires hands before commencement of battle.
Maybe that’s something that can be mandated by the AFL.

Happened to me too. Couldn’t play my Xbox game last night when I really needed some relaxation time.
Our internet is crap.

Had a similar issue, couldn't search anything local, only US

We've got what the people voted for.

Mine was the opposite, Australia OK anything in US no. Didn't realise that BF servers are in the US, so is Kaspersky and my US Politics sites.

Think that Optus lost a few customers yesterday.

It’s the telecommunications companies that bear the responsibility as its their products.

Governments of any persuasion are not running those companies so it’s up to the telcos to win the business and keep your business with good product.

My comment was a response to the observation that our internet is crap, nothing at all to do with the telco in question (the highlighted aspect). The Government determined the NBN network that rolled out and must therefore take responsibility for all the associated foibles. Both parties took very different ideas to the people at an election. The people chose the system they wanted through that election. Telcoes will only ever be as good as the system allows and people have the discretion to choose what sort of service (as decreed by the Government) they can access, but that a whole different discussion.

Fair point.

I’d have preferred if the whole NBN was not ever rolled out by anyone.
White elephant. Billions spent for some pr0n being faster at times is my summation.

I’d assume with no NBN the tacos would have invested even more in the cloud and we’d still have what we have with 5 G being the premier product. But what would I know. Too simple to avoid spelling billions on things we don’t need.

Mate was the Principle Tech Officer with Telstra Radio section which had responsibility for adapting our systems for 5G, had been working on it since before the roll out of 4G. He always said that even with 5G, you'd still need an underlying internet system to support it. Australian internet was crap, NBN is a vast improvement. It's just that it could have been so much better. It will remain critical infrastructure for years to come. Enjoy your pr0n, just remember you have a major spillage event to plan for.

Very good.
I actually didn’t know that about what 5 G required. I like learning things.

I don’t need any funny sites, football keeps me happy enough.

And as you say, preparation is key.
I’m ready.

Strange when I think of NBN, I think in terms how it would help business (video conferencing, live demonstrations to the world) and also in the medical profession (specialist/hospitals in the cities conversing with local gps) for patients in the country and remote areas.

For mine it was an investment in the future and when you compare our previous service, it was miles behind many other countries. I was actually quite happy with cable but understood that we had to spend and invest big. In the end we have a have arsed service and quite likely wasted a lot of money.

New Zealand although smaller land mass have done it extremely well.

I genuinely lucked out and live in a privately run FTTH estate. Almost zero drop outs, good speeds, reasonable prices. It's shown me what can be done if the money is spent and it's done right.

I'm raising kids in a world where automation is going to do away with countless jobs in transportation, retail, warehousing, health diagnostics and other industries. So as a parent I'm trying to crystal ball and listen to futurists etc to see what sorts of skills and qualifications are a dead end a s plot where the growth will be. Of course, my kids will probably ignore my guidance and become truck drivers, but at least I will have done what I could to help them.

If we as a country half-arse our way through our digital infrastructure upgrades, we're at risk of being left behind and kneecapping a whole generation of Australians.

I think when you're raising kids, you need to recommend careers in areas where you have to be located in Australia to do the job.... unless of course, your kids get qualifications in something like nursing which is transferable to overseas.

What I mean by saying the job has to be done in Australia, I give an example of mining. You have to dig up minerals etc where they are located. You can't dig up Aussie coal in China. Of course, automation is going to decrease the number of jobs but there will be a few left.

Another area is providing services here in Australia. Things like shining shoes or waiting on tables. I think richer Australians in the future will still want humans to provide services for them. Hair cutting, toe nail snippering. Yes automation may be able to do it but I dont think richer australians will be satisfied by that.

Some jobs like toilet cleaning etc may also be automated but for the reason just stated, I think richer australians will still find value in paying fellow Australians to scrub their dunnies.

Careers in chasing after dole-bludgers and similar will probably still be around, although that will depend on whether the dole is being paid.

And of course, there's always the military. Yes we might get robosoldiers but war really isnt war unless people are getting killed.

I hope this helps

Thanks Mark. Forwarded to the wife and to the school for their immediate attention.

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone else noticed the new AFL app update and the stats pro section they added? Pretty impressive!
Can select any player from any team and will show you video of every possession/involvement in that game played. This probably doesn't deserve its own thread but thought it was pretty cool.

It's been a thing on the website for a while, if you have a Telstra account, but good they've finally brought it to the app.

If your not a Telstra customer, and who would be, or a live pass subscriber, don’t bother installing the app.

And North say good bye to Brad Scott.
