This illustrates why pre-season intra-club games are not necessarily a predictor of talent or form.

True. But I’m not entirely surprised. There were definitely moments where Crocker’s VFL form warranted senior selection... he just couldn’t impact many games at the quicker paced AFL level.

So for mine he’d be a bust at AFL level again.

Likewise FWIW I don’t think Appleby would offer anything except a ready to play, mature depth for a young North Melbourne. Another player who looked good at VFL level but struggled to impact at AFL level

But best of luck to them both.

being a 185-187cm 84kg (non midfield player) like both Crocker and Appleby are is tough in the modern game. Really need a point of difference otherwise too small to be aerially dominant and too slow to be a quick player

I would have liked to see Appleby play a few more games. I’m not 100% convinced he can’t make make it. He did look lost at times, but I wonder if there was a particular role he could learn to play (ie a run with player/tagger) and given a block of games in that role whether he can show what he can do.

Wasn’t going to crack our backline. Like Aish he might find a home in Norths defence... or as a general utility. A young list like North could do with a few more mature bodies. But I don’t see him as part of their long term future

Hard for players his size to make it at AFL level unless they have an elite attribute like interceptions or run

Good luck to him though

i know this has been said before, but I was looking at a recent grind episode, and saw a player number 27 and went to the site to see who that guy was, and other details...

well i got his name, but nothing else. There's several players who still dont have their details up. I dont understand why being professional means that you dont do things quickly. I understand that it might take weeks to organise a photoshoot and several meetings and months of post-production on the photos etc...... but how about a simple snap and 5 minutes editing the details? Just as an interim measure until the million dollar professional approach to doing media work has its time to do its magic.

I think we hold our people in too high regard (as bad as the bombers), whereby we rate them so highly on past performance and give them far too much credit and fail to review them year in year out.

And I think our recruiting department/list management is one which really escapes attention. Do we really believe they have been the best in the country over the past 5-10 years? Has the strategy been on point?
The list to me looks unbalanced. Not as bad as the bombers, but not that much better.

I think recruiting is the most important thing in the whole process. If you manage to recruit the right players, you can make up for the coaching and injury management and trading. I look at the scharenberg freeman draft as more of a disaster than the stephenson treloar episode. Some of that - freeman - couldnt be forecast but scharenberg had a history of injury and he was given too much credit for his footy smarts. We've done well in some of the lower draft picks and I certainly wouldnt be writing Hine off but its hard not to see all the misses that we've had over the last decade and wonder what would have happened if we had done a little better. The dumping of players to get the payment situation fixed - if it has been fixed - was absolutely necessary but I'm not that confident that the guys we have got in are going to fill the places of those that departed. I must admit that i still dont understand the recruitment of players like trey ruscoe...its beyond me but I know nothing of these things. I am a little perplexed that Hine gets a pretty good run at BF while a lot of others like buckley gets savaged. I think some of it is due to the PR focus that Hine has had over the years. I think that he spends far too much time explaining his drafting agenda to anyone who will listen, but obviously the fans love it.

Ben Crocker has missed out on getting a spot on Carlton's list, with Oscar McDonald getting the nod for the last available place: Versatile ex-Demon wins race for Blues' final list spot (afl.com.au)

Quite a pity for Ben but I can't see that it would have made much sense for Carlton to take him.
