The Doom thread.

Warning:If you don't already know what Doom metal is,you will not like anything in this thread and you should probably leave now.

Might as well start with the best,Solitude Aeturnus.Traditional style epic doom.

From my Wiki search, I like Isis, Pelican, Boris, Om, Electric Wizard, Orange Goblin, Melvins, Sahg, Sleep and Sunn O)).

Most of those are more sludge/stoner, but wiki still says they're Doom, so what are your thoughts on those bands being classified as Doom, Schism?

Most of them are doom of some sort.Isis and Pelican aren't really doom though.Sunn is drone doom.Members of Sleep, who were stoner went on to form Om and High On Fire. But yeah i won't argue if people want to label Isis and Pelican doom, that's cool.Hardcore Isis and Pelican fans are the ones that would take issue with it i think.

It's ok Schism, I'm not Doom, I get it.

I'm off to listen to some Coldplay.:(
I dunno what you're on about :) I was just saying listening to those bands isn't bad (or gay...?), because they are cool, just not Doom apart from Om.You'll hardly find a bigger Agalloch geek than me!

I'm sure if cellotape rocks up,he'll tell you that Isis is absolutely not doom metal.Agalloch are black/folk,they also do some ambient stuff.Pelican are usually called post-metal,and to be honest i don't think it's possible to be a doom band without a vocalist.

Some death doom:

The best death doom band is probably Runemagick, with Morgion a close 2nd.Inexplicably,neither bands best material is on youtube.

Runemagick - For You My Death

Runemagick - Ancient Incantations

Morgion - Descent To Arawn

Along with Ahabs 'Old Thunder',Morgions 'A Slow Succumbing' is the best death doom song i've heard, unfortunately i can't find it on youtube or myspace, which is bizarre considering there is far more esoteric bands and songs on both.

Ahab - Old Thunder

Anathema before they misplaced their testicles:

LOL. I don't really care about genre labels, but having genius like Isis and dogshit like Om under the same category is a bit iffy.
I know you're an Isis fanboy...but calling Om dogshit is a bit much.Pilgrimage was awesome. And i know you don't care about labels, who really does?It just makes it easier to identify and find music.

Anyway now you gave me an excuse to post some Om.They are regarded as doom i suppose.I'm not sure what else you'd call it,dogshit aside.

What are Isis anyway?Garden Of Light is doomy.

Big fan of doom, been following it since the early 90's mainly with the death/doom bands, though must admit I don't keep up with the death/doom bands of today - mainly just the stoner, sludge, post-metal type bands now.

Can't say I agree with your warning either Schism, I think it's much more accessible than some more well known music like Death Metal. Especially with bands like The Sword for example.

I don't quite understand what the standards are for genre qualification these days (it's all a bit of joke to me to be honest), but I think these are close enough (all listed on wikipedia under various forms of doom FWIW)...

Some of my all time favourite songs....

Anathema - Sunset of Age (1995)

Cult of Luna - Dark City, Dead Man (2006)
- (part1)

- (part2)

My Dying Bride - Your River (1993)

Cathedral - Fountain of Innocence (1993)

Minsk - Holy Flower of the North Star (2005)
(can't find a video for that song, so I'll post a different, but also good Minsk clip)
Minsk - White Wings (2007)

Well i don't consider The Sword doom, they are pretty much straight up heavy metal.I guess you could say some doom is accessible, but we are on the BF music forum, where open minds are about as common as Dodo shit.

All the bands you posted are great,i too love Minsk and old Anathema.Cult Of Luna are playing a gig here soon i think,a couple of weeks maybe?

Some more great DOOM:

Saturnus - Inflame Thy Heart

Saturnus - Christ Goodbye

Swallow The Sun - Deadly Nightshade

Omit - I can't find anthing by Laura anywhere in Adelaide or Sydney so still haven't heard them .

Schism - Are Electric Wizard actually considered doom? I bought Dopethrone when I heard it in Rocking Horse Records in Brisbane and loved it but I thought they were "Stoner" metal?

Good thread, good music.

This thread needs some Candlemass - Leif Edling a doom metal legend

Here's a couple of cuts from their 1986 release "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus". Mind you the whole album is very good.

Well...yeah they are stoner doom i guess.Like alot of bands you could tag them as quite a few different styles and probably be correct on all of them.
