That's mpre my experience with doom - as an aside, does anyone know what happened to Pod People? Canberra band with a visiting Bloodduster type playing with them?
 
Some guy did a 'Top 50' Doom riffs clip on youtube.

Some of my fav doom bands (not that I listen to much doom anymore):

Early Amorphis, Forest Stream (Russian, def check out their album Tears of Mortal Solitude), October Tide/Katatonia.

Not that I've been home to australia for a few years, but oz was full of doom bands back in the day. Not many were great mind you, but there was The eternal and a couple of others that were half decent....

Great clip.
Agree with the Paradise Lost "Embers Fire" and Anathema "They Die" riffs.

Big fan of Tiamat's Astral Sleep/Clouds/Wildhoney era. Always thought that from Clouds "A Caress of Stars" was the stand out song and had better riffs than "The Sleeping Beauty" (in the doom riff clip).

Tiamat's Wildhoney is a all-time classic album imo, though maybe not doom? - gothic? atmospheric metal? don't know what you'd call it, but it's good...

haha, seeing Pyogenesis in the doom riff clip brings back memories. Anyone heard what they ended up sounding like? This clip is 4 albums after Sweet X-Rated Nothings - you'd never pick they were the same band...

Kauan is a good current russian doom band.I see there is a Saturnus riff in that clip.I posted some Saturnus earlier in the thread...legendary doom band.

Laura are sensational. What albums did you order? If you dig post-rock, it's almost impossible not to love them. That is, unless you have a shit taste in music like these nuffies...

I bought "Radio Swan is Down" it was the only one I saw yesterday but now I see there are a few more. I'll wait until I get that and have a listen before I buy anymore. I've been chasing them on Omits recommendation so looking forward to hearing them.

As for the Nuffies what did you expect from people that listen to COG.

**** me, people need to turn off their radios get down to a pub that plays live music or just go to a record shop and have a look around. Take a punt, find something not being force fed to you buy record companies and radio stations.

Probably the wrong thread for this type of rant though as their isn't much doom on commercial radio I wouldn't think.
 
Laura are superb :thumbsu: Mapping your dreams has stood the test of time very well, I've flogged that album. I just favour it over Radio Swan is Down.

Saw them here in adelaide about a year ago and the crowd was pretty small :thumbsd:

I must admit i was slightly disappointed with their latest EP, but nonetheless a terrific band that deserves more exposure.

Some good news on Ahabs new album,although i don't think there is a single fan on here besides me,that i know of anyway

Ahoi seaman, this friday Christian Hector will enter the studio. Soundengineer Cornelius Althammer - also drummer of AHAB - will record the first guitartakes of his bandmate. The guitar-lines, mostly written by Daniel Droste this time, are a bit more complex, yet in a funeral doom and death doom style. Chris explains it as follows: "It sounds a bit like a mixture of the "good ole" Ahab-style mixed with very atmospheric tunes. So the description of Ahab as it's posted on doom-metal.com as a 'riffing funeral doom band' still is valid. You may say there are riffs, that sound a bit like Devin Townsend going Funeral Doom, Carcass in slomo or Morbid Angel going beyond the slowness of "Blessed are the sick". Still to some extent the influence of our colleague of Tyranny can still be heard in some few riffs. So most of the music stays the same as you know it, although there are some hints to Postcore and classical doom as well. It also maybe said, the songs are much more epic and vast. I think the new riffs fit perfectly to tell the story of the Wreckage of the Essex! So Daniel made it quite easy for me to fit the lyrics to the music!" The next to be recording will be our bassplayer Stephan "Norz" Wandernoth. His basslines also will be more sophisticated than those on "The Call Of The Wretched Sea". I'll keep you informed! I remember just discovering them back in 2002, and buying Silent Enigma and then going out and getting Judgement, then checking out their earliest stuff (They Die etc)

Then Resonance 1!!

I should've done my research better. By the end of this ordeal, I figured I'd accidentally bought the albums of 3 different bands with the same name, and didn't pursue them any further. These days, The Fray do that sort of stuff better anyway.

Some of their later work is good,it just isn't doom.And it is frustrating to think what sort of doom they could be making instead of...post-rock or whatever it is they do now.

Their singer actually has quite a good voice, too, which I never would've picked. In the old days it was either growling for the heavy bits, or forlorn spoken-word for the softer bits.

Amazingly,Isole have a new album out,called Silent Ruins.They just released Bliss Of Solitude last year,and side project Ereb Altor was recently released,so they are busy boys.

You dismissed candlemass as terrible in another thread when i posted Sorcerers Pledge

Anyway,there have been a few good christian doom bands,or at least christian themed.Paramaecium and Virgin Black from AUS spring to mind.
