They have so many first rounders now, you'd think they should contend in about 3 years.
Wouldn't surprise me if they win their next premiership before we do unfortunately
Ah yes, the old first rounders = success thought. Damn that GWS/GC dynasty really showed how well that pays off.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Its an interesting question.

Would you rather tank and be an absolute basketcase and win a flag after around 20 years of being that way or would you like to be a Club that every 5 years or so comes close to winning a flag and plays finals fairly consistently going deep into September ?

To be fair to GWS, a lot of their early first rounders were wasted thanks to SOS
GC more so, but there is a key point there. Having a large amount of first rounders means sweet **** all on its own. (Also it's for a different point, but GWS incurred that many first rounders over it's history it had to have a high fail rate)

People have a way too simplistic/idealistic mindset when it comes to development. A first rounder + time = gun when really, that line of thought has such a fail rate that it can be inferred that it has never worked that way at all.

In fairness to Carlton 11 of their 1st rounders are mostly rejects from other clubs.
3 of their 1st rounders are virtually cooked, Murphy Kreuzer Thomas
Allow for a couple to be average SOS selections probably Dow and O'Brien
Allow for a few to have injury riddled careers like Docherty
It only leaves a half a dozen serious 1st rounders being Cripps, Weitering, Curnow, SPS, McKay, Walsh.

That's why they are 1 & 4 and 4 from 35. Their depth of class is about as shallow as a kids wading pool.

Getting games into spuds is like giving crap wine more time to age.

In 2016 they had 1st rounders like Sumner, Gorringe, Everitt, Jaksch, Wood, Boekhorst, Lamb,

the only thing that has changed are a few names same spud recruiting policy of rejects or injury prone players

3 GWS players are playing for Collingwood in Adams, Will Hoskin-Elliott and Treloar , Shiel for Essendon. Put them all back in GWS and it would have probably been a dynasty. Holding their players was always going to be their problem as with Gold Coasts . The big Melbourne clubs were always going to win out from the expansion clubs .
