It is!

Swine Flu is the biggest beatup in the history of the universe.

Amen to that. You'd think we were talking about the Motaba virus from Outbreak the way the media and public are carrying on about it

Exactly. At the moment Swine Flu isn't deadly in Australia, it is just like normal flu, pretty much harmless. It's pretty much the same as normal flu (in Australia that is), even normal flu kills a few people every year. However if swine flu mutates as it did in Mexico then it can become a worry. However most of the casualities in Mexico were either malnourished already or pretty old in age... Anyway, swine flu has the capacity to be more deadly than normal flu but it hasn't mutated thankfully, yet in Australia. Anyway, even if does mutate we've got the vaccines and medication to combat it.

Saw some figures on it yesterday. Total people (worldwide) confirmed with the disease was around 28,500. Total deaths (worldwide) were 144. That's a death rate of 0.5%. I'm not sure what the fatality statistics are for the seasonal flu, but I'd be willing to be it has a much higher death rate (2-4%).

You do make a valid point though. They're not worried about swine flu in its present form. They're worried about someone coming down with both swine flu and seasonal flu, with the two strains mutating together into something which actually IS dangerous. It's more of a risk for Australia than it is for northern hemisphere countries, because we're coming into the normal flu season.

Yeah, it's the mutation that they're worried about - that and it's a particularly contagious form of flue.

Still, terrible news for Dougy and Armstrong, neither can really afford the time out right now.

Petrenko comes in for Douglas, and Cook and Shirley are the two new emergency listed players replacing Douglas and Armstrong's spot.

Swine flu is a load of propaganda bullshit!

No worse than the normal flu, just chuck the word swine in front, makes it sound dirty because it's a pig. ooooh, cash up for pharmaceutical companies.

Soft effort by everyone to be swept up in this crap. It's natural selection, kills the old and weak.

vote #1 for the Natural Selection Party.

We will be releasing a few Tigers in the city so only the smart survive, making peak hour traffic much more bearable.

Listen Stan! SARS is destroying our people. The Native Americans put it in the blankets they gave us. Soon there will be only 98% of us left!

unlucky for Richie as he was starting to string some real solid games together...

look forward to having you back against Sydney

ADELAIDE have been hit by a swine flu scare on the eve of their AFL round 12 match against North Melbourne.

Young onballer Richard Douglas reported symptoms of the flu yesterday and was withdrawn from the side to play the Kangaroos on Saturday morning, being placed in quarantine pending the results of testing.

Mr Douglas' housemate Tony Armstrong, who had been listed among the three Adelaide emergencies, was also taken out of the firing line as the Crows sought to keep the flu out of their ranks given the tendency of bugs to spread like wildfire through a football club.

Jared Petrenko has replaced Douglas in the Adelaide 22 while Robert Shirley and Myke Cooke have been added to the emergency list.

"Dougy has the symptoms of the flu and, as part of the process that everyone is going through at the moment, anyone that is living in the same quarters -which in this case is Tony - has to be kept out of harm's way,'' Crows football operations manager John Reid told the AFL website today.

Douglas cleared of swine flu

ADELAIDE onballer Richard Douglas has been cleared of swine flu but will still not play for the Crows against North Melbourne on Sunday evening.

Douglas was tested for the virus on Saturday after experiencing some symptoms.

Douglas' housemate Tony Armstrong, who had been named an as emergency, was also ruled out of Sunday's match.

Crows football operations manager John Reid said the club's precautions in relation to the virus were necessary.

“As part of the process that everyone is going through at the moment, anyone that is living in the same quarters —- which in this case is Tony —- has to be kept out of harm’s way,” Reid said on Saturday.

Reid said no other players had developed similar symptoms.

“Dougy only got the symptoms yesterday and he hasn’t been amongst any of the players since. It’s only when you start showing the symptoms that you’re able to spread it,” he said.

Jared Petrenko will replace Douglas in the Adelaide line-up, while Rob Shirley and Myke Cook have been upgraded to the emergency list.

Another media beat-up regarding the swine flu "pandemic"

Phew. Thank god it's not the goddamn swine flu, the media were a bit premature in saying that he did have the swine flu it seems.

Pretty relieved now.

good to hear its no swine flu, poor dougie is gonna be hearing all the pig jokes at training next fortnight.:o

what a beat up this swine flu business is.

Well holy shit! He's got the flu during winter. That's unusual isn't it.

Yeah my facebook just told me the same thing. He probably just had the sniffles :( Poor Dougie.
Everyone gets the sniffles, just because he did does not mean it's Swine Flu! This Swine Flu business is getting beyond ridiculous.

Actually the Aussie "flu season" doesn't actually hit for a few more weeks - WHO (World Health Organisation) are watching closely what happens here in Oz because the northern hemisphere hasn't experienced this strain under the worst conditions (that of winter - with all and sundry coughing/sneezing and generally spreading all kinds of germs over everyone else). Whilst some call it an over-reaction (particularly as it's in a fairly mild form at the moment) it has none-the-less been classified as a pandemic with it's classification at level 6 (the highest). The biggest danger is that it will mutate (and it will) at some point and could take a fairly nasty turn. I'd rather them have a pro-active stance to this than a re-active one!

Some refer back to the SARS "scare" and apparent over-reaction, but the difference was the disease wasn't passed from human to human (only from chicken to human). This is where the swine flu differs greatly.

the biggest loser in this caper is Tony Armstrong. reckon he would've been in line to make his debut, but got leapfrogged because he was quarrantined....for ultimately NOTHING!

Rumsfeld (the man who sold nuclear technology to North Korea in the 1970s) owns the company that makes Tamiflu. Google it if you don't believe me.

Ain't that the truth!!

When I first heard about Dougie I thought we were about to have another debutant in Armstrong and was quite looking forward to see how he'd go.

Then it was announced that as a precaution Armstrong wouldn't be playing either, and I'd have to say that I was disappointed.

So Petrenko gets another chance. He started the season well, so let's hope that he can reproduce that form this week and give us a bit of bite around the packs up forward.

I think we'll miss Dougie though.

Will impact on our rotations as Petrenko unlikely to go into the middle as Douglas does. This may mean Porps has too which will put more pressure on Knights.

On the positive side could be the making of Petrenko as he may do very well and never look back. Another Rising Star nomination coming up as he kicks five peharps!:D

I expect Petrenko will go down back and replace Goody and Radar will join the midfield rotations

good news is that tests has cleared Dougy so he will be right to go right after the break
