My older brothers were Fitzroy supporters and took me once to the Junction Oval. Remember their CHF Bernie Quinlan, a pretty good kick for goal and could roost a ball.
I remember Quinlan kicking a goal from beside the centre square in a match against us at the Junction Oval. It was a mammoth kick, albeit with a healthy northerly breeze blowing towards the Fitzroy St end of the ground.

I remember that kick... went 80m or just over if I remember rightly...

Was just preparing to write this before I saw your post - "Saw Bernie Quinlan kick a goal on the run from the wing at the Junction one day - with a torp."

He hit it beautifully & it made the distance comfortably. If I remember rightly we lost the game.

yup... ran through the back corner of the square IIRC, straightened up and went boom... freak of a kick.

yeah... we lost, but that kick wasnt the decider... like the Blight bomb.

God help any American astronauts currently in residence at the International Space Station. They could be stuck up their permanently without govt funding to cover the cost of the Russians bringing them back to Earth.

Never got to see a game of footy at Junction Oval.
One of the few that I missed out on.
Never went to Vic Park either, although that could be a good thing.

The Junction Oval was a throwback to the early days of VFL football with it being in mostly original condition.
Victoria Park was a shithole (pardon my French). If there was any more than 22k spectators it became very uncomfortable & unpleasant (of course the Collingwood supporters contributed to the unpleasantness).

Can't say that i'm disappointed that I didn't make it to Vic Park.
Have been there since to watch U18 footy, and it's an absolute disgrace.
Collingwood have pretty much left it as it when they moved away from the joint.

I actually live across the road from Victoria Park and the council have done a fair bit of work and opened it up to the public. Great for a kick of the footy and you can wander in for free to watch VFL or U/18's.

How bad was that day at Kardinia Park. Wind blowing a gale, players kicking the ball and it was going straight up in the air and back down again, had to stand on the outer wing and we lost!

First and only time we played there in my time.

Oh and the day at the Western Oval. Wettest day ever! Carlton only kicked one goal for the day. Once again, first and only time we played there in my time!! Thank god for that!!

I think you're talking about our loss there in '97. We also played them there in the final round of '96 and smashed them. One of the great away wins I've been to, and revived dreams of back-to-back after a relatively mediocre season.

There was talk about Collingwood moving back in there and bringing the ground capacity up to about 30-35k... the council, remembering the state that the filth left the place in and how much it cost to restore it to a safe and clean condition, told them to **** right off.

Hrrrrm maybe I did go twice. Only remember the loss though :(

that was a shocking loss... I copped it from my grandmother for weeks after that... damned collingwood supporter

Please do me a favour Franc and on behalf of all Carlton fans take a massive dump on it!!
