Remember when Geoff Southby decided he was gunna be a full-forward??

Would have been around 1976, saw him kick a handfull against Fitzroy at VFL Park.

Reckon it lasted til near on mid season.
Yeh, it was definitely 1976. He basically told the club he wanted to be played at FF or else he was going to leave. He got the opportunity, but other than the 5 goals he kicked against Fitzroy, he didn't set the world on fire. Of course Walls was still playing at CHF & kicking plenty of goals (10 & 5 goals in our two games against Richmond).

Southby happily settled back into defence & never raised the idea of playing forward again.

Every year him and Swan McKay (bored with training), were going to South Melbourne.

Can remember Rod Ashman sat out half a year trying to get a clearance to North???
Sat out the start of 1979, but eventually gave in & returned to the team. Ultimately missed the GF due to a hamstring injury, possibly contributed to by his lack of fitness from missing so much football.

How good was Rod Ashman!

Where are the Sons of the Mosquitos?

TL you beat me to naming S. Oliver, thought he was going to be a great blue bagger. Seriously sad when he returned to Castlemaine homesick.
Simon Verbeek, IIRC would perform very well in our reserves but could never get it together in the seniors.

Angwin. The only time I ever said I'm going to the game to watch this bloke.
Angwin could have been anything... instead he decided to be an arseh*le instead of a footballer.

Sartori, Daniel, I think his first name is.
If I remember correctly he used to get berated for his accuracy on goal but there was one game against Fitzroy when he kicked 8

Peter Sartori.

You young folk have got it easy. Before the Internet, smartphones and ticketing agencies you had to be dedicated to get to the footy and get a good seat. During the season you'd get there well before the gates opened at 10.00am to make sure you got a vantage point for viewing the game. No booked seats in those days and plenty of standing room. For the big games people would be hanging off the rafters well before 2.00pm.

And then there was the final series

I remember camping out at the MCG with the supporters of the other teams waiting to buy your finals series tickets. I wonder what the brushtail possums made of the humans hanging out in Yarra Park. I'm not sure what happened but it was eventually moved to the grounds. I think the stampede when the tickets went on sale was a tad unedifying and dangerous.

So for many years, for a couple of weeks leading up to the finals, you camped at Princes Park for your series tickets. Camp beds, sun lounges, canvas chairs stretched from the back of the Gardiner Stand and well past the Heatley. It was seriously cold so the car was a good place to rest. Raffle tickets were used to indicate your place in the queue so it was well organised. My mum organised our group like a military operation. I think you could buy up to 8 sets of series tickets as long as you had the memberships to match. The tickets were sold in a series so in the 60s and 70s you had your tickets to all finals games. You owned that seat at the MCG for four weeks during September. The printed tickets were a work of the printer's art. Designed and coloured for the particular finals series.

It was rough and tough in those days but I suppose your willingness to do it proved undying love and dedication for your footy teams.

Apologies

Absolutely no need to apologise 3 years. It is the beauty of this thread just remembering the names of the past. I remember Sartori well, from memory he was number 18?? Big tall forward who looked the goods. Remember him kicking 5 or so down at Geelong one day. Could play!! :thumbsu:

Great post, I remember the camping out days and the series tickets. My first ever GF I attended was 1979, what a day for a young lad!!

My first ever GF as well. As a teenager I could only afford a standing room ticket, so I got to the MCG at 7.00am (I wanted to catch the first train at 5.00am, but my Mum wasn't having any of that, so I had to get a ride from my Dad) & I stood behind the goals at the city end of the ground. It was handy that our Under 19 team was in the GF so Carlton supporters didn't have to wait too long to get some action & chalk up the first premiership for the day.

In response to Robbo's my hero's post about buying finals series tickets, it obviously became easier in the early '80s as I waltzed into the MCG after work on the day after tickets went on sale in 1982 & walked straight up to the ticket office & was able to purchase tickets for myself & my brother without having to wait in line. Of course in buying the series ticket you were punting on your team making it all the way to the GF. It was a good way though of guaranteeing you would be at the GF if your team did make it.

First Grand Final was 1966. The next year I sold my ticket to the GF and went to the Show. First Carlton win was '68. I've seen all the Carlton wins and losses plus a number of others. Saw the Kangas win in 1975. It ruined the end to the club song. They'd be boasting about winning the premiership and we'd retort "we're still waiting". I remember Cowboy fixing up Peter Hudson in 1971. I ended up doing the victory lap with the Hawks players. I'm not sure why but I had a seat on the fence so I must have been inspired by the thought of running around the 'G with the cup. '87 was special. It was the last won I shared with my mum. I remember leaving my seat on the fence and finding her on the Southern Stand wing. After the celebratory embrace, we cheered and sang the song until we were hoarse. '95 was great but not sharing it with my mum made it a little sad :(

It is amazing that even though I was only 7 years old that day my memories of it are still quite vivid. I was in the stand up the other end of the ground to you MSR and what an atmosphere. The scenes after it were quite amazing, the sheer relief on the Carlton faithful's faces was exhilarating.

I miss those days and cannot wait until the day we are a genuine premiership threat again. I walked out of the 1995 GF thinking how good is this and expecting we would be a force for many a year to come, the time after that has made me realise how much you have to cherish those golden moments as they can be fleeting.

David Parkin always used to say be quick to fill the pages of your youth as the pages are quickly turned...true words indeed in football!

Used to love the old one on one duels back in the day.

Southby always got McKenna, Nick always went after Len Thompson, but my fave was Billy Picken up against Mark Maclure.

Billy couldn't kick, Sellars couldn't run, but both of could take a grab. Remember one game at Princes Park in 1980, Billy got free kick number eleventeen, tried to con the umpire into 15 metres, Sellars just stood there on the mark, Picken goes the big mongrel and hit it straight into Sellars, who kicked it straight over his head for the goal.

.....and we won by less than a kick.

Now that I think about it, was the day Kenny Sheldon utterly coat-hangered Ron Wearmouth in front of the Gardiner Stand.

Great post. It's sadly lacking in today's game.

Bruce Doull v Royce Hart was a special duel over a few years. I think Doully had the better of Hart one on one and it went a long way to winning games against Richmond when the rivalry was at its peak.

Syd Jackson and Lee Adamson was notable for different reasons. Syd used to cop a fair bit of racial abuse from the Collingwood half back. I think Syd was a 'stolen generation' child and his upbringing in Perth saw him well educated. Adamson called him a yellow bastard one day and Syd told him he must be colour blind. :D

Doull played a terrific game on Hart in the 1972 grand final and it wasn't until midway through the 3rd quarter that Hart kicked his first goal for the game. The desperate tigers even moved Hart to the centre in the last quarter.

95 was a good year... Got back from meeting my deadbeat dad in the UK and got told by my mum that me and the step father were heading to Subi thanks to her winning a couple of tickets to the wet toast vs Carlton game. Was a bloody cracker up on the old grass section with rabid WCE supports all round. 1 point win over them at the old house of pain was special.

was at this game also.
My first at Subi.
The atmosphere was so intense and the win was as sweet as i've felt as a spectator/supporter.
Great times

With Bosustow he only played 3 seasons and 65 games. Has a player at Carlton ever had such a huge impact in such a short time?
How could you forget Mario Bortolotto. He only played 30 games in 3 seasons and like Buzz has 2 premiership medals to his name.

Not sure what the opposite to a Norm Smith medal is, but Tatts would have won it in the 1981 GF.:D

I was there as well and its the game where Earl Spalding put Guy McKenna to sleep with one of the great hip and shoulders.

Poor Mario. He sat on the interchange bench for the entire 1981 GF, with Parkin admitting afterwards he had forgotten about Bortolotto due to the closeness of the game & then when accepting his premiership medallion his name was called out as Scott Howell instead of Mario Bortolotto.
