I know I have mentioned this before but I saw Steve Da Rui iron out the young Tuddy at Vic Park one day in a reserves game. He got stretchered off and the noise it made still makes me ill to this day!

Steve Da Rui = Man's Man!

Celebrates his 50th birthday on the 21st.

Round 1 2014 has demonstrated that football has entered a phase where fans don't count at all. There is no logic at all in playing 9 games over a 16 day period and calling it an opening round. I'm not a fan of after dark football. I like my football played in natural light and in a stadium without a roof. Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays fit this bill for me. The MCG suits me. A renovated Princes Park suits me. I'm not keen to travel interstate to watch Carlton play. Looking at the fixture. It looks like Melbourne is the only game that fits the bill.

I have attended football matches since 1964. I was 7 years old when I started. It didn't take long for me to develop the views that I still hold dearly.

1. Never criticise an opposition player (unless it's Dermot Brereton or Dean Wallis or a player of that ilk)
2. Never put up with a Carlton supporter criticising Carlton Players (this can be applied outside of game day because there are whingers lurking everywhere. Even on BF.)
3. Be polite to those who think they know what's going on and want to tell you about it. Listen to what they have to say, nod and grin occasionally and hope to Christ they eventually lose interest.
4. Demonstrate good manners and etiquette unless the person is talking shit. Politely inform those types that you believe they are wrong and are talking shit.
5. Umpires don't exist.
6. Never drink alcohol until after the game (refer to points 3 and 4 to see what happens if you break this rule).
7. Remember the culture and history of the game and honour it. Don't try and diminish it by saying that only the four points are important.
8. Remember the culture and history of the Carlton Football club and relish it. You didn't have to be there to appreciate it and own it.

Here's one.

First time I ever sat in Heatley Stand, little 12 year old, in my Levi Jeans, and Levi runners (why don't they make them anymore), in 1977, Peter McKenna at full forward, Tony Southcombe at ruck........v the Nemesis, Richmond.

.....bloody John Pitura, in the only decent game he EVER played in his life, slotted one from 3 yards, and the Tigers ran away with it....

Wow really?? We should have something on this board to celebrate! He was a fearsome man. :thumbsu:

You're not wrong. He was a massive bloke who enjoyed throwing his weight around.
Cannot believe he just turned 50.

I want to hug this post.

Although Buhagiar was the exception!

I can't believe we dropped off the front page. Some of the new threads are pretty lame (just like Matty Kreuzer at the moment)
Come on let focus on what we can control (the past) and not the future which appears out of control (like the team we barrack for)

Down Memory Lane was played out last night at the MCG. Father/son has delivered again. I'm going early and predicting that Dylan Buckley's debut 4 quarters is the best example of a huge step forward for Carlton in the past 3 seasons. I was there in 1976 at Victoria Park when Dylan's dad Jimmy Buckley debuted for Carlton at 16 years of age. The boy from Kyneton who wanted to be a jockey became an integral part of the Carlton team that won three flags in four years. Jimmy had many attributes. A touch cocky, mentally tough, physically tough (just ask our current coach), a great kick, courageous, quick and dangerous when a game was there to win. I'm not sure about Dylan's ego but it looks pretty solid. As for the other attributes I saw them last night and that's why I'm excited about his future at Carlton:thumbsu:

Simpson's and Yarran's efforts against Essendon three years ago...

Love listening to that Audioslave track.

Still get shitty at Collins' lack of awareness and poise to do a U-turn after receiving the handball from Yarran. If the ball had been flicked over the top, Yarran could have had a shot at goal.

See in the training reports thread Kenny Hunter will be signing autographs on Saturday.

Helluva footballer, him and Bosustow both came over in '81, Buzz had all the press, MOTY and GOTY, yet it was Hunter that won the B&F in his first year, and had a Premiership medal to show for it. Apparently Richmond were after his services and some bright spark said "We don't chase half back flankers".

He would have weighed 70kgs wringing wet, socks around his ankles, awkward left footer, yet pound for pound, the best contested mark I've seen, his courage unquestioned, bordered on suicidal at stages. Jimmy Jess knocked the stuffing out of him in the '82 gf, could barely get him off the field, sure enough he fronted again and kicked a crucial goal while in LaLa Land.

3 Premierships, a b&F, and won the goal kicking one year...........says it all.

Kenny Hunter was my favourite, met him a couple of times. Actually Kade Simpson reminds me of him, similar build and courage.

Great write up Stig!

I actually have a very close family connection to Ken and his mother. One of the nicest and most unassuming blokes you would ever meet. Not a boastful bone in his body yet one of the greatest Carlton players I have seen play. Courageous, skillful and if he was playing the modern game would be the perfect 'swingman'.

I have still not and never will forgive that arseh*le Leigh Matthews for effectively ending his career with that dog act at Princes Park!!

Struggled badly after he left footy. Pretty sure he's back on top these days. Geez, he was some sort of player. Heard him say in an interview with Finey on GuesSEN that he broke his jaw 3 times in his first year of footy in WA. I would be terrified watching him sail front-on into oncoming packs as he attempted a mark most blokes would manage to avoid. Too brave.

Had his jaw broken three times in WA football before coming to the Blues.

99% of blokes would have run away from the game.

Absolutely the bravest player ever to play the game.

Do not forget, on the day that the buzz took mark of the year against Geelong, Hunter dominated the game with 13 marks in the back half.

Loved the buzz, loved hunter. Like trying to pick your favourite child.

Had the pleasure of hearing the story behind his nickname from the man himself in rural WA a few years back. Great story, but not suitable for public consumption.

I believe he broke his jaw for the 4th time when he returned to Perth to play in the ammos for University after he finished at the blues.

I was unaware of this list of 150 legends of the club until a Richmond supporter mentioned it to me today. He said two things that struck me as strange if you were considering legends of the Carlton Football Club. He said Brice Gibbs was named and Peter Busustow was not named:eek:

I thought about for a little time and decided on my own criteria. All best and fairest winners. All captains. All-time leading goal kickers. All Norm Smith Medallists. All should have been Norm Smith Medallists. Captain-coaches. Others who made a special contribution to the club and that feat has become legendary. I'm not sure that current players should have been named. They can vie for the 200 list!

Out of 150 I think I counted 81 that I had seen play. I can't comment about guys who played before 1964.

Legends who missed out. Peter Busustow, Ted Hopkins and Warren Jones.
Good ordinary footballers who missed out. Fraser Murphy and Justin Murphy.

I'm not going to bag anyone who made the list. They have all played their part in the history of the Carlton Football Club. I think the current players would accept that the promotion is about the history of the club and only former players should have been named.

Bosustow will always be remembered for his spectacular play. I remember going to see his last game for Carlton in round 21 in 1983 against North Melb. Carlton was on a 6 game winning streak after a horrible mid season slump. Near the Heatley stand goals Bosustow gave John Law a big whack on the head, got reported and received a 3 week suspension. He missed the elimination final and never played for the blues again.

The buzz was one player we missed in the 83 finals and the following seasons when Hawthorn and Essendon started to hit their straps.
