This was the '82 one.

The commentary is abysmal too. Matthews blatantly jumps into Kenny's back, swinging his boot into the back of Hunter's head to boot, and the jackass calling the game doesn't even blink.
But Alex Marcou comes in to remonstrate, and: "He should have had the ball taken off him, Marcou... but he didn't."
Matthews could do no wrong, apparently.

good player

I have bumped in to Richard Dennis a few times over the last couple of months. He was drinking beers in the past players tent at my footy club a little while back, no idea why he was there or who he knew but he was enjoying himself.

He was ex East Perth wasn't he and may have been an ex Coolbinia boy?

I think Matthews, as great a footballer as he was must have copped his fair share in return because if you listen to some of his comments now it's as if his brain has turned to mush. For the thug he was on the field and the rules he played by he turns his nose up a bump now saying the player should get a week for that

Yeah, picked that up too Biggus, they weren't half biase back then

We talk a lot on here about our best players, top 5 of them etc. What about our greatest thugs, the top 5 Carlton thugs?

Chitty, Hands, Lofts, Waite, Rhys Jones?
I was too young to see him play but wasn't Wallsy pretty good at dishing it out.

Wallsy wasn't a thug. He learned to look after himself. You had to do that to survive the type of footy played during the 60s and 70s.

Started football in 1968 as a tall skinny 17 year old playing in the back pocket along side the likes of Lofts, Waite and Collins. Now these three could be thuggish on occasions. As he developed into a champion player he copped some attention from the opposition. To sink or swim in this environment you couldn't be pushed around and that's all Wallsy and others did. I'd called them strategic strikes to make other guys think twice about giving out cheap ones.

I loved Wallsy. Still do. I hope he's enjoying his French vacation. I wouldn't push in front of him in the baguette queue:D

Wallsy was a bit of a sniper at times but very good at picking his moments;) I remember him saying big Nick used to instruct him before the game as to who he needed to take out of the picture.

Take out Rhys-Jones. He would fight, but most of it was fighting back. He got hit more times than he dished it out.

Carlton has a pretty clean history compared to a lot of other clubs, but in terms of behind the play stuff, Greg Williams comes to mind.

Wes Lofts for sure. John Nicholls you have to include because it is one of the things he did. Much like Leigh Matthews, he may have been a brilliant footballer but he also flew the flag so that others in the team did not have to. Chitty, yes.

Ken Hands, no.

Lofts, Nicholls, Chitty, Williams.

Who else? Got to be Ian Collins.

Best elbows in the game.

They were his weapon of choice.

Good points FootyGeek. My footy memories are really from 1979 onwards, everything before that i am going by what I have read.

Whilst he was not technically a thug Earl Spalding was a pretty hard player. Wayne Johnston probably also deserves a mention and Jimmy Buckley.

Bomba Sheldon didn't mind a bit of biffo, can still remeber him utterly snotting Ronny Wearmouth in front of the Heatley Stand in 1980. Got reported, fronted at the tribunal and went for the untried "By my wife is expecting" defence...........got 4 weeks.

Percy was pretty handy with the coathanger, got Max Richardson in the middle of the MCG with a nice old swat........and Ricky McLean found football a distraction, when there was a fight to be had.
