Mine goes back to 1975. Finally convinced Chris Pavlou that I deserved a game for Carlton u19s. Had to cool my heels as I was on the bench. We were playing * at Princes Park.
Finally got my call up during the orange time break. I was feeling angry and elated at the same time.
We were kicking to the Heatley Stand end. It was one of those days where the wind was howling across the ground but the sun was shining.
Right. I was playing forward something I could do but I preferred to play on the ball.
Two crumbing opportunities fell my way and Robbo kicked two goals. Take that I thought to myself. That will convince the coach.
Playing footy I don’t think I could have been any happier. I was on my way.
There were other opportunities and I did OK but a couple of months later me and Crozza featured in an article in the Football Record. We were referred to as grasshoppers. Guys who had been cleared to another team before the 30 June deadline.
What could have been? I still have those conversations in my head and it’s been over 40 years. Since I could remember I had dreamed of playing for Carlton. It was looking pretty good until Bill Hoogan left and was replaced by Chris Pavlou.
Round 4 or 14?
