Bert Thornley was a Gilbert. I recall another Gilbert playing after him but not any Berts.

Barassi was initially convinced by the match commitee to resist bringing Hopkins on but he changed his mind just before the players went back on the ground.

Just checked a website. Hopkins played in round 1 at Arden St the following season, got only 2 possessions and then retired. The '70 grand final was Bert's last game.

Be nice when they fix up the mess of going from 2 on bench to eventually 4 in later 1990's. That been biggest change in game in terms of way it is played, and not for the better. How many interchanges did each team have on average in 1980's and early 1990's ?
10 to 20 a full game or a little more ?

In the early '80s the number of interchanges per game might have been less than double figures. In the 1981 GF poor old Mario Bortolotto spent the entire game on the bench (Parkin has admitted forgetting about him), so I would suggest our total interchanges that day would have definitely been single figures.

In the 1982 GF, Bosustow started on the bench & was only brought on in the 1st quarter because Ditchburn was concussed by a knee to the head from Alan Martello.

Funny to see Brereton matched up with Peter McConville and Curly Austin gives Lethal Leigh a towelling as the day went on. Doull and Buckenara on each other. Two stars.

Curly was one of the very few players who always had Lethal's number. Should have been an automatic selection whenever we played Hawthorn.

Matthews just about ended Curly’s career dropping both knees into his back on at least 2 seperate occasions. Lethal was aptly monikered...

I always considered him unlucky not to play in the '82 GF. Was very good in the 2nd half of the season.

He was but as I mentioned when posting the video Jimmy Buckley, Southby and Maclure were not playing in the preliminary final. I also incredibly forgot that Wayne Johnston was not either. He was serving his 2nd week of suspension. So for grand final, 3 of those were coming back in Sellers, Bucks and Dominater. Southby still injured. Some guys were going to be unlucky to miss and Clarke was one of them.
Curly Austin did too. Cannot remember why but I assume he was injured.

I see when I check up that Greg Wells was also on our list that year. Bloody strong list back then. Too long ago to remember in detail but I assume Wells either injured mid season or retired mid season as played no games after round 14.

It is amazing to think we won this preliminary final with guys like Johnston, Maclure, Jimmy Buckley, Southby and Wells not taking part against such an opponent.

Our list manager now was a kid then watching on. He would dream of building a list this strong again.

Johnno copped a 2 week suspension from the QF thanks to David Polkinghorne breaking the players code at the tribunal & squealing, so it made the win over the Hawks in the PF even sweeter & of course Johnno played brilliantly on his return in the GF.

I remember Parkin stating after we won the '82 GF that the choice was between Klomp & Clarke for the final spot in our 20 & Klomp got the nod because of forecast wet weather. Although there was a little bit of early rain, Parkin conceded that in hindsight Clarke would have been the preferred option, particularly given Ditchburn was out of action before the end of the 1st quarter & the ground did not end up as heavy as expected.

Some people that did not see Rhys-Jones play may think he was just a footballer that had white line fever and got into a lot of fights but as some of this video shows, he was also a very gifted footballer too.

Those raking 35m hand-passes. As good as kicks.

Fox were showing old GFs on Sunday. I sat down with my son and talked him through my emotional state during the second half of the 81 GF.

Collingwood had a run on in the third and got to 21 points in front.

I told him that I had a converse with God after Williams soccered through the goal that put them 15 points. It was a simple plea. “Please God, not us”.

Just before orange time Ashy kicked a nice goal from an angle and Bucks tucked his bum in, found some space and slotted another.

I then regaled about it being a non-contest in the last quarter as we romped home for our 13th Flag.

We then focused on the playing group and it was truly a super team (apart from Scott Howell and Mario Bortolotto). My son only questioned me about Des English. I told him Des was as solid as a rock. A man of his ability and we played him in the back pocket.
