Yep, agree. But Williams has every right to stand along side him.
Was a triple Brownlow Medalist.
Big Nick would have won multiple Brownlow Medals in his day if the umpires didn't focus as much on the 'fairest' component of the award. To see players like Dipper, Diesel & Libba subsequently win the Brownlow is a massive slap in the face for Big Nick.

Vin Waite actually. The whole clan were as mad as cut snakes.

Vin Waite was the one who came to mind first for me. Wes Lofts could dish it out too. If Wes had been playing in 73 Balme would never had knocked out Southby. Old Neil would have been too concerned about what was coming. One of the big mongrel acts I’ve seen. Was a favourite, Southby.

Okay this is the time of year this thread comes into its own.

Time for some memories. I invite everyone to share their favourite Carlton memory. Can be a game, an event or an issue.

Mine was round 3, 1993. Sticks redemption.

The week before he put it out on the full after the siren to draw with Essendon.

The following week we played the Hawks on a hot Easter Monday. I stood on the hill in front of the scoreboard with a big crowd at Princes Park. We were behind and from memory Rohan Welsh kicked one to bring us back. Sticks then marked with not long to go. He went back and kicked the goal to put us in front. We held on to win by a couple of points.

1999 prelim.

Essendon prior to the game had 4 losses for the season, were on fire with 8 wins in a row, winning 14 of their previous 15.

We made the prelim despite winning only 12 H & A games, losing in the last round vs tigers when the scoreboard caught on fire and then getting destroyed by Brisbane in the qualifying final.

Went to the game not expecting to win but hoping for a competitive performance. Our seats were on the top level of the southern stand right behind the goals at the Punt Rd end.
Looked like Essendon were going to win comfortably after they kicked 7 goals to 2 in the 3rd quarter. What an incredible last quarter that was by us. Regained control. Kouta unstoppable. I was a nervous wreck in the final 2 minutes. Amazing scenes after the final siren that we could not hear due to the crowd noise. Ecstatic blues fans jumping up and down while devastated Essendon supporters not moving and with their heads in their hands. My wife (then girlfriend) not a footy fanatic but was also jumping for joy and happy for me. Memorable moments.

The atmosphere was unique that day immediately after the game. Strangers hugging each other. People crying. The noise reached a crescendo and hung around. I had my children with me. 14 and 10. I told them to soak it up because they were unlikely to witness anything like it again.

The successes have been few since then and I can see another 99 in our future. The wins over * in 2011 and Richmond in 2013 are amongst my favourite games.

The sound was so oppressive at the Richmond game. It pushed you back into your seat. The second half of that game was fantastic because we turned the tables and the Richmond supporters were gutted by the end.

‘95 Rd 7 vs * at G.
No Diesel or Sticks and Dean Rice comeback gameand no so called experts gave us a chance
Down at 3/4 time and I think kicked 5 goals in last to win. Crowd so loud that day couldn’t hear final siren. ‘99prelim was only other time didn’t hear final siren

Was that against Essendon??

In recent times the pickings have been slim, but 2013 Elimination Final v Richmond stands out. Had a group of Tigers behind me niggling us right through the first half, saying repeatedly “You wouldn’t want to be anywhere else...blah, blah, blah.” I think Fev kicked one before half time to offer a glimmer. After HT Juddy goes berserk and we kick 6 in the third. Another 6 in the last and the game was ours. Duigan kicked 4, he was a late inclusion after Brock McLean withdrew. About halfway through the last I turned around to have a friendly chat to my Tiger mates, but they had gone. They were “somewhere else.” Gold.

Yes ‘twas. I remember Bear kicking a goal in last and the crowd just erupting. The general noise of crowd that day was biggest I ever heard but ‘99 prelim was biggest eruption of noise when Murphy broke free and kicked to Ratts. Obviously Kouta’s two pack marks in final quarter

If it is the game I am thinking of Troy Bomd took a mark or got a free 20 metres out directly in front in the last quarter. He walked back with a smug grin on his face only to miss the goal.

I still reckon the biggest noise in the 99 match was when Lappins goal dribbled through in the last quarter.

Fev was long gone by then. Waite was playing though & dished off to Juddy for his memorable goal in the last.

My experience of most types of Richmond fans, from time I grew up in school to this day is nobody deserts a sinking ship quicker than Richmond fans. They also the quickest to jump back on again and proclaim they stick through thick and then more than any other supporters. It is incredible how fake most of their followers are, with emphasis on followers. Their followers outnumber their true real supporters like no other club I seen. Every club has those type of followers but they really make me shake my head how full of it most of them are.

Great memories. It’s a “where were you?” moment...

I had just bought my first home. We were building a massive house. Anyone who has ever built will understand how stressful it can be. Our dream home had become a money pit. A living nightmare. So in order to save some money, I was doing some of the smaller jobs myself. Considering I didn’t know what end of a hammer to use, it wasn’t pretty.
On that day, I was there with my five year old son. We had been there all day, working on the back yard. It was muddy and cold and the more work I did, the worse the backyard looked.
There was a mountain of dirt, mud, giant rocks, and rubbish that stood taller than our fence. Every time I looked at it, my blood went cold.
Not expecting Carlton to win that day, we weren’t really listening to the game. Plus I was in no mood for footy. So I toiled away, while my boy played in the mud with his footy.
I went to the car to check the scores, as there was no electricity in the house. The last quarter had just started. I thought we might be a sneaky chance.
So it was tools down. I opened the doors to the car, and turned the radio up loud. My son and I sat atop of the that muddy mountain, and listened as Carlton, lead by the great Kouta, showed a will, determination and focus that is seldom seen.
When that final siren went, my little boy and I were ecstatic! Suddenly the worries of that time were put on hold. My son and I then decided to have a kick of the footy. We played kick to kick for about an hour, In the dark, the rain, and the rotten smelly mud in the backyard. But it might as well have been the middle of the MCG.
For those few moments, I didn’t have a care in the world, and my son and I enjoyed a closeness and love of football that we still share nineteen years later.
Sure, it’s just a game. But what a game!

So long ago memories are faint but love this thread to relive the old days. Especially ‘95 as was the first year I went to nearly every game in Melbourne

Great post TheCoach16. There’s a place for you in Poet’s Corner.

The strength of relationships built through footy continues unabated. Having my children with me that day meant everything to me.

Listening to the footy on the radio is a great experience. It’s chaotic. It’s stressful. Where’s the ****ing ball on the ground? That’s all I want to know. I can imagine that moment when Fraser Brown tackled Dean Wallis. The noise would have been confusing. And then the elation of the final siren.

Great post TheCoach16. Where’s the ******* ball on the ground? That’s all I want to know.
this was ultimately part of rex hunts downfall - he'd rather let it be known how excited he was by his screaming, blustering stupidity than let people know what was actually/accurately happening
