Found an online copy of The Age featuring the 1975 grand final win by North. It was mentioned that Crosswell was cleared to North after round 6 that season because the kangas offered him a better contract. Perhaps there were other issues brewing that led to the incident that Robbo mentioned.

Crosswell was a great finals player. He was one of the best players in the roos huge win in the grand final against a Hawthorn team that was in a form slump and had lost 5 of their last 7 games.

We finished behind Hawthorn in second spot on the ladder 2 games clear of North but we went out in straight sets in the finals including a narrow loss to Richmond.

North had a very slow start to the season but finished the season strongly.

Losing Crosswell may have cost us a grand final spot, maybe even a premiership.

The Carlton teams of 1975 and 1976 were realistic premiership chances which failed miserably. I think that the side was split with Jezza and Wallsy leading the opposing groups. Crosswell leaving Carlton probably had nothing to do with this issue.

I think 1975 was Big Nick’s last year as coach. Jezza was Captain from 1974 until 1976. He was replaced as captain by Wallsy in 1977. Not a move which pleased him. Unsurprisingly Carlton missed the finals in 1977. Wallsy was still captain in 1978 when Ian Stewart was appointed coach. Stewart was a disaster who suffered a ‘heart attack’ about 6 games into the season. Wallsy whacked Stewart in the rooms after he treated Doully poorly. It was a ‘this is too much’ moment for Walls who left to play with Fitzroy. Serge Silvagni stepped in until Jezza was appointed captain-coach. Jezza was happy again and this led to finals in 1978 and a premiership in 1979. It was a brief renaissance as Jezza found himself in deep with club politics again and left to join St.Kilda.

David Parkin then led us out of this without the histrionics of Jezza, Walls, Harris et al.

Of course this is just opinion as Robbo wouldn’t have had a (wo)man on the inside. ;)
 
Tonight’s B and F reminded me of another celebration that took place at the Carlton Footy Club for many years. The annual Carlton Supporters Club (CSC) dinner dance. The venue was the Carlton Social Club and it was well patronised.

The CSC was a properly constituted group of supporters who were mad for the Navy Blue. It had a President, a treasurer and a number of volunteers who raised money during the football season. I think raffles were the main source of funds although they might have twisted arms for donations as well.

They formed a close alliance with the Carlton Cheer Squad in some activities and their shared madness for the club. In those days the collective would meet at the MCG and VFL Park during September and decorate the rooms with bunting and balloons to turn the change rooms into those underneath the Heatley Stand. I got roped into these occasions as I was tall compared to the women and I was quite adept at climbing ladders.

But I digress. The dinner dance.

During the year designated voters would vote 3,2,1. The purpose of the dinner dance was to hand out trophies to the top three as well as others like best clubman and best rookie etc. All players on the list received an invitation to the dance where a three course meal and drinks would be served. The only paying customers were supporters who wanted to mix and mingle with their heroes. The participants had a great time and the players did as well as it was well patronised by the playing group. Who is going to knock back a feed and grog for free?

I loved those days when Carlton was a community which congregated at Princes Park.

Love getting this back story before I started following us. Always wondered what was going on just before I followed us in 78.
Even 78 was my first season of following from week to week was too young to understand all the off field politics that goes on that can effect clubs.
As a kid it hit hard when see on tv screen at home. Jezza had quit as Carlton coach in the summer after we had won the flag.
Feel like I got my head more around it now as an adult and hearing from likes of you and Jezza about it from driving in car with Sam Pang. Even Wallsy gave some good insight into what went on to lead him to goto Fitzroy and Ian Stewart gone as coach in that first season I followed in his car drive with Pang.

My ride as a Carlton fan from 1st round 1978 to last round of 1983 I look back with amazement of just how much amazing stuff happened on and off field at our club. Bosustow suspended was in retrospect the end of that era as that 79 to 82 type group premiership campaigns were over and the 87 team was a very different style of team and personnel too that was our next premiership group.
 
Player movement time.
1981 Carlton got clearances of Bosustow and Kenny Hunter from their WAFL clubs to Carlton
23 year olds when made their debut.
Meanwhile David Glascott made debut that year probably up from old under 19's system.
Think we got Bortolotto from Geelong.
Mid season clearances existed so unlike 2019 where we got Adrian Deluca mid season, in 1981 we gained Frank Marchesani from Fitzroy in exchange for clearing Peter Francis to Fitzroy. Apparently Marchesani that was a virtual Norwhich Rising Star winner of time sat out first half of season as Fitzroy would not clear him during the off season.
 
Have been away from forum for nearly a week to keep my sanity away from speculation of trades that knew would be not much happening until last day.
But youtube has some more Carlton stuff I seen in that time.
Will post links later but some of it is of Carlton re-union of 1979 premiership and one video has full Teague interview on there.
Worth checking out. When look up youtube history of what I watched in last week will find the links and put here.

I got married in February '95 and at the time had a bit to do with Rohan Welsh who played for us.
A few days before the wedding he visited me at work and gave me a big card signed by the whole Carlton playing list of that year, I was absolutely stoked.

AT the end of the season after the great year the team had my then wife said that she hoped that Carlton played that well every year (even though she supported Collingwood, later converted to Carlton once i successfully indoctrinated our two children)as I was happy all the time :D

Unfortunately we separated in 2002, not a year of great happiness on any front, I blame Carlton and that first wooden spoon:p
 
Robbo has had a lot on his plate in recent times and has cut his posting to match the output of the Prime Minimal.

However I’m pretty excited about what I found today hiding in a dark recess at my brother-in-law’s place.

I thought these gems had been lost. I’m rapt to have found them again. I reckon my mum purchased them but they ended up at my sister’s place after she passed. Now I’ve lost them all but listening to these recordings will bring back the happy memories that we shared.

And, as we all know, “3KZ is football”.
