An interesting view of players time outside the club and their privacy issues.

“Just because they’re not at the football club doesn’t mean they’re away from footy,” Buckley said.

“So you talk about the quality of their off-field time — and that was something that came up in the study, that only half of them thought they had really good quality away-from-football time — you can’t escape, it’s a different environment to what it was 10, 20, 30 years ago.

“If you’ve played well everyone wants to shake your hand and if you’ve played poorly everyone wants to kick your a---. If they’re your own supporters they want to give you their opinion and if they’re opposition supporters then they want to stir you a bit.

“So it’s up (to clubs) to develop really strong, mature individuals that can cope with that can understand that ‘hey, that’s not actually about me as a person, that’s about my profession’.”

The demands on our players time are growing by the year and some of us need to remember that it is a pretty full on commitment for a young man walking into his first club.

You know what I feel for them especially the young guys, its a mind blowing experience for an 18 year old. I know at 18 theres no way I could of handled a situation like that.
There is another voice speaking to me however that says, quit yer whinging and get on with doing something you love and getting paid extremely well to do so. Also factor in the off field opportunites and Im much less inclined to bust out the kleenex for these guys.
Yep its a tough gig to be in the public eye so much but Im sure they wouldnt like the alternative. A few of these blokes, if not good footballers would be struggling to land a job as a garbo.

So I say boys, quit complaining and get on with enjoying your job cause it doesnt last for long.

Hence my long standing position of never talking to them in public.

I don't know them personally and they don't know me.

I just leave them be, no matter what club they come from.

A little kid I understand, but IMO adults should know better.
