DRAFT 2005 - GUNS - The Next Wave

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

OK. This years draft is over, the players have been selected, some expected picks (Deledio,Griffen), some from left field (Rusling, Slattery) others totally bewildering (Gwilt,Thomson @11) some surprising (Wood, Eckerman@51)others ignored (Kirkby,Toovey).

The recruiters will now move on to the next batch for next year. All the indications from those in the know are that it will be a bumper crop.
So who and where is the next gun player. Some that were not picked up in this draft will be eligible next year again.
Give us a preview of 2005:

From SA look out for:

Tracis Varcoe- not sure if his eligible though

James Kendall
DOB: 20/10/87
Club: East Perth
Height: 187.5 cm
Weight: 82.0 kg
Position: BP/HBF

Reads the play very well which often has him leading his opponent to the ball and giving an attacking rebound. He is a good overhead mark, moves very well and has a fantastic penetrating kick. James has very sound defensive skills (spoiling) and good depth in his long kicking.

Even though he is a good size to play in a key position in the colts, it’s unlikely he will be able to hold down such a position in the seniors.

Former Richmond and West Coast goal sneak Mark Merenda believes Kendall is one of the best underage kicks that he has ever seen, consistently kicking the ball over 60 metres.

Josh Sampson from South Adelaide, was told by Rob Pyman that if he wasnt picked in this draft, he'd be playing league this year! should highly increase his chances of being drafted in 2005, dare I say, top 20!

Thomson @11
You should read Colin Wisbey's player review on Thomson.

Mightn't seem like such an odd selection, especially for a team in need of inside midfielders.

Collingwood's selection of Rusling isn't too odd now that I've read how much research we put into him and that Essendon apparantly keen with their second pick.

Thanx I will.
I was not critical of Rusling's selection, just indicating that he come from nowhere into consideration in the last few days prior to draft day. He could well turn out to be the best thing since sliced bread.
I was pointing out the unexpected high draft pick that was used to get Thoimson.

Nathan Jones and Tim Mannox should be mentioned. I'm suprised Jones hasn't been, very suprised.

is he even on Northern's list anymore?

No, Nick Lynch quit during the season because he wasn't happy with the coaching structure apparently.

I'm hoping now Ray Shaw is gone they might be able to convince him to return. He has apparently been doing very well in the DVFL.

Even if he doesn't return AFL clubs would be stupid not to keep an eye on him in 2005 - looked a good prospect.

Sadly, i missed out on an pre season spot. I made the cut for the 44 and played in U16 games against Eastern Ranges at Berwick, but didn't make the PS list. I'm invited back to the U17 games, so hopefully i'll do something with that oppitunity.

Jones will go top 10 next year, he is a freak of nature. Played about 5 TAC Cup games this year, still only 16 years old, got afew stints in the midfield and got alot of the pill. Jones played in the U16 championships and was BOG i beleive in the opener. Ben Kelly is another player, he isn't as good as Jones, but reads the play very well, great on the wing and in my opinion, would be an awesome HBF. Brad Langenburg is another, although his height is a worry. Could damage out of the FP or BP with his speed and vertical leap.
