I thought I would start a counter thread to the "Trade Aggressively". Whilst I agree that we should do some "small tailor alteration" trading, I am not in the "sell the house" strategies of others. IMO these will only see us get stuck in the middle of the pack, and Fyfe and Walters will end up being Pavlich and McPharlin of the next generation. What we should be doing is aggressively drafting! :p

Sure, this draft looks weak in nature, but when everyone else writes it off as such, that is when there are bargains to be had. Like many of the top sides, we have done well with bringing in mature age players....

We need help up forward. Whilst everyone is looking for "Superman" (Or Matthew Pavlich) we should look for diversity of forward types. The Lyon game plan relies on players that can run both ways; to that end the "slightly too small to be a KP" forward (complemented with large resting ruckmen) complement our side well. What is available?

for me Shane Yarran from Subiaco would be a great fit in this area; He has great hands, the pace to get out on a lead and is a good kick. He is dominating at a lower level, and he comes from a successful team. Sure we could get him for a second round pick?

At the higher end, Ryan Burton looks like a Darling / Stringer / Gunston sort of player. He's broken a leg, but hopefully that is just a distraction that means he falls to us in the draft.....

We need an ideally tall rebounding defender to eventually replace Michael Johnson...Greg Clark is a wiry but very tall (193cm) midfielder that hasn't had an amazing year but certainly has the potential for something. He was a captain for WA, and you would imagine he would fall around pick 20 - 40. If we traded to get another pick in there and start to train him up as a rebounding defender.....

Who else is out there?

Agree Ryan Burton looks like a modern forward, versatile, good mark, and an athlete that can play up the ground
projected to go around 15-20 in the draft so definitely a KPF we could grab and groom as the next pav

All depends if you want to compete for the flag next year or not. These are long term options and are good ones, but these guys won't help us beat Hawks in next year's prelim.

We have an array of quality mids and zero tall forwards if Pav retires. So what's the logical thing to do?...

Ultimately we should be looking at what it will cost us to make Jesse Hogan #1 forward from 2017 onwards, but if we throw everything at GWS for McCarthy then we have nothing to offer them next year. Id be happy if they threw up 2 first rounders and zac clarke for hogan, but not sure 2 first rounders for McCarthy is great business in terms of managing our draft picks for the next 2-3 years

If we miss out on McCarthy, secure Bennell with a second round pick + player, then we can do both. Still a massive win for the club. Can see this
happening, from the noises made from GWS, they will bend us over a barrel.
Better to chase Black, etc, for peanuts, plus mature age player, and in a few years target McCarthy, Hogan, on our terms.

Would like us to look at a small defender late in the draft e.g. Fiorini or Agostino.

I also like Mitch Hibberd but not with our first pick (if we keep it)

If we can get Bennell and McCarthy is a no go then this should be the plan.

Also have to keep in mind how important the big key forwards are anymore. Hawthorn more rely on a rotation of skilled players through the forward line than one stay at home forward. Yes they had Hale, Roughhead and Gunston as talls but they rotated with smalls like Bruest, Rioli and poopslow, Roughhead often played off the HB line if anything and Gunston is a medium tall. By contrast what good was the Coleman medallist in the GF? Not saying high quality talls are not important but maybe we only need one very mobile one plus a mobile 2nd ruck and it is more important to have high quality delivery to a rotating forward line.

I think Grey will be an excellent small defender. Id rather we got Marcus Adams with a late pick.

Yep, want Adams too but with the supposed lack of depth in this draft he could be taken early in the draft and I wouldn't be too disappointed if we took him with our second pick. Regardless, second or third with Fiorini or Agostino taken at the other pick.

I've always thought Grey would be a good small defender too, but he's been really disappointing this year with no improvement in the quality of his disposal so I think we need options or competition for spots.

P.S. Grey may not be with us next year (hasn't re-signed)

The problem with drafting the bargains no one else rates is there's often a very good reason they don't rate them. De Boer is a good example. His limitations meant he dropped down the order and although he's done well to maximise the talent he was given, his limitations are still evident for all to see, and the issues with his skills were a stark contrast to Hawthorn's slick ball movement in that prelim.

Guys like Son Son and Lachie could be considered successful examples though, maybe in a moneyball-esque way height is an example of a characteristic that is overrated? You wouldn't want your team full of 'short people' though.

After the Port Adelaide game Lyon was effusive in his Grey love;'fought on like a tiger' and other flappy man love terms so I cannot see him not being at least offered a decent extension.
I'd guess he'll sign up soon to a two/three year deal.

I think Brady Grey is our next 'cab off the rank' in that regard, or do you mean in addition to him?

Edit: never mind, I've seen the posts further down the page.

Hopefully in addition to. Love the guy, has a real crack and have been saying since we drafted him that he'll become our Puopolo i.e. small defender/forward swingman, but I thought his disposal would've improved more than it has (it actually hasn't).

Offer one first rounder and leave out Zac Clarke.

OK I'm just going off a person who I don't know well but she does have links with the freo inner sanctum and she swears to me that Barlow is heading to Brissy for Luemberger plus a pick.

Can't see this happening now that we have let Ballard go, he and blakely and the like for like replacements with barlow, Mundy isnt getting any younger either

Interesting
We need the pick (they will have plenty in the 20-30's with the exodus they are having again)

We also need another ruckman but all reports essendon and Sydney have luey tied up.

Not sure Barlow has much currency either?

Good Intel but I don't see it coming off

Luey is a free agent. If that was happening Lions would mainly be looking at a deal that gets them high band compo pick.

I would think Barlow would have plenty of Victorian options if was open to being traded.

All in all a curious sounding trade deal.
