Strategy Draft assistance 2023 [Twomey: NMFC get #19 in 2023, x2 end of 1st rd picks in 2024, and x2 extra rookie list spots in 2024; no Sanders/#11]

Would love the club to come out and say something like:

"We specifically requested end of first round picks to try and limit the impact on the top end of the draft that certain other clubs have made with their previous priority picks"

Those future "firsts" shouldn't go anywhere near trades for Stephens and Fisher

We already have a couple of 3rds for stephens and fisher.... we have to be a little more ruthless as clubs know we have lots of picks so will try more than normal to suck a few of these out of us.... psd is never used but needs to be constant threat, obviously won't work with fisher

Hows your brain size mate. It says end of first round

Depends If it's really worth it for us, I'd rather we just use all the picks we have as is. We just need to keep bringing in good players.
I was just making a quip mate, that end of first round or start of second round are both Pick 19. My brain size is fine.

Always players not picks. The points system doesn’t matter to clubs when it gets to draft night… however would be slight overs. I would pay that for Reid. Not sure Viney would, also not sure Eagles would accept still

Of course you are right, the points are meaningless unless you need them to match bids, but they are indicative of value to some extent. The Eagles claim to be looking for something special to give up Reid. I'd say trading him for Curtin and twoend of first round picks would count as something special.

We need to transact Fisher and Stephens. Wouldn't be surprised if we traded 2024 Pick 20 to one of them for the player and 2nd round back which we give to the other for their player.
I understand the logic (two players for one pick), but Fisher is a Carlton salary dump imo, and we shouldn't be giving up too much in draft capital. We can hold Sydney up against the PSD for Stephens, so with both, we've got the superior position

As long as mcKay triggers band 1 its all good.

2, 3, 14 & 19 is a great draft hand - especially as it drops away after the 1st 25/30 picks.

Curtain, McKercher, Murphy, A Reid

Med Key back, Speed and elite kick, Tall Key back, Tall key forward.
I really want us to trade our 3 for Melbourne's 5 and 13.
Can still one of the top group at 5. Possibly Watson or Caddy.
Trade our 2 futures from next year and our future second for GC's 5 while conveniently not bidding on their players. If they have to "go into deficit" next year. That deficit is covered by those picks.
I'd even be tempted to see if Gws would trade their first this year (6 I think) first our future 1st next year and back ourselves to move up the ladder.
We need bulk talent now, not spread over another 2 or 3 years. Plus the bond the 1st year guys form when they come into a club together makes them more likely to buy in and want to build the club to success together.

So the dream would be -
Trade out -
  • 2023 pick 3
  • 2024 natural first (4 - 8?)
  • 2024 2 assistance firsts (19 & 20), 2024 second (22 - 26)

Trade in -
Melbourne's 5 and 13
Gws 6
GC 4

2023 draft -
2, 4, 5, 6, 13, 14 & 19

Stephens and Fisher with later picks this year
Another good player with our future second
Haynes salary dump

Won't come into the draft until 3rd round 2024. Little draft or trade capital so Look for 1 or 2 good free agents off the back of a much improved year. Reload again for 2025.

7 elite youngsters and 4 mature players in 1 year.
That's how you reset a list!! I'm off to tell Brady now....
The bonus of this is that we retain our 2024 r1 & R2 picks.
Knowing our need for KPP's I'm starting to be tempted to split either pick 2 or 3 to get O'Sullivan & Caddy (combining with pick 14) while also keeping the other 2 top 5 picks.

We all know how dodgy the AFL are. I have little doubt that this pkg & associated terms / conditions was created to assist not only us but also either WCE or GC via trading the future picks. I'm happy with what we're getting, it's more than I expected & wouldn't be surprised if the deal has already been done behind closed doors.

Im assuming this in no way impacts our natural future R1 and R2 picks.

And again we get assistance with caveats attached, basically use them or lose them (future picks I mean)

They'll burn down the Polo Club if we ended up with that !
