Isnt trying to be a real world on grass test - just the most reliable way to campare between players - as on grass there would be issues such as one player starting off a slightly looser clod of turf than someone else etc... running track is a consistent surface for comparisons.

Exactly, it's like any scientific study, you want as even a playing field as possible so that the results are comparable with as little noise as possible.

i think people are also forgetting his height... vertical leap is foot clearance to the ground (tap height minus how tall they are)... so NicNat is 4cm taller than Brennan was - so he has actually outREACHED him by 4cm... which is what is important as its that which marks the footy - not your feet. WIth a couple cm maybe growth left in him - it means you'll have someone who hands reach the ball a good 10 or so cm before anyone else.

Definately not. Watching him through the U18 champs was such a let down considering what i had heard about him.

He was always a 'freak athlete' who will 'smash' all the records at draft camp. I have heard all year how he will kill the vertical jump test, yet he can't beat Trent Croads record?

If you look at Watts- great footy brain, great athlete. That's what you want.

78 cm is disappointing in a standing vertical leap for him. The UWA couldnt even make their test go high enough for him. Was expecting more he has a better vertical leap then Brennan.

Recruiters have got the massive jumps he's done in the past. He didnt really need to prove that at all today. Same goes for most of the guys really, most of these kids have been tested at preseason and some at AIS. The times themselves are probably just as important as the way the player handles himself, pushes himself, interacts with his peers and other coaches etc.

Yah it measure the JUMP (highest marker tapped minus flat foot reach height)... so in REAL WORLD ie footy height DOES matter... as two guys with the same vertical leap - the taller player outreaches him by however taller he is... so hypothetically if NickNat was playing against Jared Brennan in a game, he would 'outmark' him by 4cm, even though they have the same leap (their feet would be the same height off the ground but their finger tips 4 cm apart in NicNats favour... of course this assumed their arm length is the same as we dont have figures for their raw arm reach so can only go by height difference)

i dont see your point obviousily the taller you are the better chance you will outmark someone. Also it depends on there arm length not necessarily there height. The vertical leap is measured from where you can reach just standing eg: raising your arm, and then you jump and whatever the top of your hand reaches a result. The difference between your fingers is what vertical leap you have.

Nic Nat can jump 78 (standing leap) + 197 (height) + arm length = maximum height
Brennan 78 (vertical leap standing) + 193 (hieght) + arm length = max height reached

if Nicnats arm length was 80cm then he could reach 355 cm mark which is almost 12 foot

height doesnt matter. A 178cm guy can have a 78cm vertical leap as much as Nic Nat. Like DWD mentions and I mentioned they start measurment from the outstretched reach. The overall total height from the ground to the top of the leap would be different in this case (but that is not what is measured)but the vert leap is the same.

yeah we know that dude - you're also not following the extension to what it means in footy terms... everyone here has said the actual measurement doesnt factor in height and knows that - common sense - but for what it means as a footballer height does matter - as a taller player with the same vert leap will be reaching higher... obviously

Yeh thats physics but at the end of the day it is the pure leap height that is measured not the total jump....otherwise it wouldnt be a fair test on a shorter player....common sense.

ummm but i actually did run a 16.1. when i say i'm not an athlete i mean i do not do athletics but yeh, thats what i got...more than happy for someone to invite me to the draft camp..but these guys should be getting mid 16's i would have thought. i was getting to stage 13 when i was in year 9.

WOW, i ran a 13.8 with Endurance Sport Testing ACT IS for Work training once and i thought that was pretty impressive for a 30 YO, but 16.1..............good job.

Who has the record, i thought Crawford was up there with the best at one stage
