Top draft prospect tells interstate clubs he wants to stay in Melbourne

Top draft prospect Archie Perkins has told interstate AFL clubs that he wants to play his football in Melbourne.

Perkins has been touted as a potential top-10 draft selection who can play through the midfield and as a forward.

The Sandringham Dragons product was asked whether he had notified non-Victorian clubs of his desire to remain in his home state in 2021.

“Yes, I have. I hope they take that on board,” Perkins told SEN Mornings.

“I get that they’re doing what’s in the best interests of their footy club, but I just think personally that I’m not ready for that in this stage of my life.

“I feel like it would impact me too much and I don’t think it would be in their best interests as a footy club to have me there because I wouldn’t be 100 per cent with it, and couldn’t really commit myself 100 per cent as opposed to staying here.

“I would be ready to go and fully committed. I just don’t think I’m ready for that and I wanted to be honest about it.”

Perkins has been interviewed multiple times by both Hawthorn and Essendon ahead of tonight’s AFL Draft.

Essendon like Trump. Clearly winning right now, by tonight will be Definite Draft Winners.

Let's see in five years when all votes counted lol.

You're applying your own value judgement there mate.

Yes, city kids digging their heels in and refusing to move to play AFL makes them less endearing than the country kids or anyone who moves cross-country or even across the world to try and play AFL.

But if you're a recruiter from the home state and the kid has the talent ... who cares? It's about results.

Word was Liam Ryan would not leave WA if drafted. Eric Wallace moved continents to kick the dew in the VFL reserves, he was that desperate to make it.

Who played in a premiership?

There are plenty of talented people who don't make it because they don't have the mental commitment as well tho. Harley Bennell springs to mind. Even tho he moved interstate his commitment to footy was always in question. A bunch of our recently delisted guys who were always turning up on instagram with beers and sunnies having a great time but who never played much senior footy. Some of them had talent.

If I was a recruiter from a home state then comments like Perkins' would be one of the things I assess. It wouldn't be the only thing but to me it would indicate something about his commitment. Especially if he is being compared to an equally talented kid who is prepared to push himself out of his comfort zone to play at the highest level.

Scott Clayton: I think (Adelaide will be on Jamarra Ugle-Hagan), clearly he's an unbelievable talent and the bid will be matched.

How many offers came for pick two?

Clayton: There were a lot of conversations, when it comes to offers it's a whole different matter. There's been a lot of conversations across round one picks across the whole competition.

Scott Clayton on Adrian Dodoro leaving names on the whiteboard yesterday: I made of it that Adrian is having some fun, it's not the first time we've seen some magnets and whiteboards come out of Essendon so it was bit of fun, good on him.

Think we'll take 5-6 picks tonight

Clayton on the club's direction: It was a very planned strategy, we got some criticism from some corners about cutting so deep, but that had to be done. We had the most 26-29 year olds in the competition and we had to make some change that was courageous enough and bold enough.
