Game Day Draft Day 2020

Personally I think it's a bit young to conscript young players to leave home and move across the country. Period.

For every Chris Judd who adapts swimmingly (being a best in league talent in a strong side probably helps get you through a few teething issues too) there'd be a zillion unseen kids who struggle with their move across the country with little to show for it at the end of their brief AFL career.

Moving at an age equivalent to the end of a degree, apprenticeship or qualification circa 20-21yo would be much better for all parties imo.

But of course this will never happen. The machine would be far too scared of losing potential money-spinners to other pursuits.

Anyway a topic for another day.
Yeah, agreed. My first instinct is a reflex reaction to say "No, just leave it as it is."

But when you think about it, raising the draft age to 19 makes a lot of sense imo. It allows kids to fully focus on their final year of school and gives them a year in the outside world, so to speak, before they start their football career. I think the move to making the NAB League u19s is an indication that this might be in the thoughts of the AFL too.

Is that not draft tampering or something.
I wouldn't have thought so. He isn't saying they can't draft him, he's saying he wants to stay in Vic and hopes interstate clubs listen to that. I heard an interview with some bloke from GWS yesterday (head of football maybe) who said in general they will pick the best available and hope their culture keeps the players up there, despite that going horribly for them so far. Point being, he could still be drafted interstate despite he has said.

No clubs can still take him he’s just been open about preferring to stay in vic

same as bailey smith last year and many before that

I think it's tampering if - as in the Kavanagh example - you don't just say what state you'd prefer to play in (which clubs can listen to and make plans for, but also ignore), you say you won't play if you don't get where you want.

Spot on as per from McGowan.

He never said he wasn’t willing to go anywhere. He has been completely misquoted as usual through the media.

The only thing he did wrong in my view is saying “he wouldn’t perform at his best” if an interstate club picked him. You can’t be saying that if you’re entering a national draft. I have absolutely no problem with him saying he would prefer to stay in Vic, good on him for being honest in that regard.

Which is rubbish. It's a national comp.

I hope if we draft elijah we don't also get stuck with his dad at the club too.
Feels like a de goey being managed by his father situation and I'm not liking it.
He's managed by former Roo, David Trotter.
