Jack Grimes – Northern Knights
Ht: 187 cm Wt: 76 kg
Junior position – Midfield/ Utility
AFL position – Midfield/ Utility
Jack Grimes is an extremely impressive person and possesses natural leadership qualities. Suffered season ending back fractures which is worrying as it is an overuse injury and one that may scare off clubs a touch.
Strengths: A ball magnet! Is able to win his own ball and has the tank to keep running and accumulate possessions. He is extremely strong in one on one contests and excels at stoppages. He reads the play well and runs to space to collect possessions.
Weaknesses: I am not a big rap for Grimes’ kicking although he often disposes of the ball under extreme pressure. He isn’t the fastest player in the TAC which means he rarely breaks lines. He is a workhorse when buyers are often looking for stallions.
Question marks: Will a lack of athleticism hold him back?
Draft Prediction: 15-40. I think his stocks may rise during testing.
Stats: TAC 2007. Grimes only played 9 games this year. However he averaged near 28 disposals per game. Unfortunately of his 209 kicks, 75 were ineffective. He only handballed 48 times which means his kick to handball ratio is about 4 to 1. I would like Grimes to kick less and use his ball winning skills to create run and free better kicks.

Ludicrous name alert!

Addam Maric – Calder Cannons
Ht: 179 cm Wt: 80 kg
Junior position – small forward
AFL position – small forward / midfield
Very good small forward who was one of a few shining lights for Vic Metro. Extremely good set shot for goal and is a strong overhead mark. Has kicked big bags of goals in the past and finds a good amount of the footy for a small forward. Was injured during the champs and missed the rest of the year. Reads the play exceptionally well and has very good hands.
Strengths: Goal kicking; Ability to read the play; Marking.
Weaknesses: Hasn’t played much midfield.
Question Marks: Does he have the tank to play a role in the midfield?
Draft Prediction: Pick 10 to 40. Could go very early or could slide a fair bit depending on how clubs think he can evolve into a midfielder.
Stats: Averaged 20 possessions and kicked 4 goals in the two regular season games he played.

Under the strict rules of the draft, by not reading out Morton's club we could have forfeited the pick.

Update - was an error with the microphone. That'll do.

Now we've got nothing until pick 53. Then you start getting all sorts of random crunts.

A couple of comments according to Craig Cameron on SEN:

Jack Grimes - great leadership qualities, versatility, and is a mad Melbourne supporter.

Kyle Cheney - strong overhead, tough as nails.

Looks like we've picked up some real quality there. Have to say was a little disappointed with a lack of KPPs but can't say it was all that surprising given CC said before the draft we would be drafting best available.

Interesting to see we passed on Rance at 14, but I trust CC's judgment. I remember we had a similar situation last year with not picking Sellar at 12. Has anyone heard anything about Sellar since??

btw, does anyone else think we are creating an entire team of utilities? Looks like half our team at the moment are utilities.

Morton is a great pick at #4.
Grimes is apparently very good even though I'd have liked Rance. Perhaps he really has been overrated.
Will Maric have enough of an effect to warrent his #21? Scott Simpson perhaps might have been a better choice but Maric is apparently a gun with only his size being a slight issue.

Selected all midfielders and no KPP's in the draft selections is a surprise.

Gourdis and Gaertner wasn't selected is also a surprise. These 2 KPP's can be used in the PSD draft? (instead of Sampi).

I dnt kno what everyones obsession was wit gettin these two ther were better players in the draft infront of them does any remember Luke Molan we picked him up at pick 9 opting for a KPP instead what was the best player available and he never played a senior game.

CC didnt want to fall in to that trap again, overall we did the best of most teams. Morton is only 17 nearly 18 and is 191 and still growin by the time he is 21 he cud b 193-194 cm and be a key postion player who knows.

Grimes will play of the half back flank with poise skill and leadership somethin we've needed since steve feebey reitred.

Maric is a clever small fwd he kicks long and direct and rarely misses. Will allow davey some more freedom to play up the ground.
