List Mgmt. Draft Discussion 2016

Apologies if this has already been asked, but is 2017 actually a superdraft in your personal opinion Barrels

I just find it strange then that only one underager (I think?) made the U18 All Australian side.
I don't know enough about them to call it a 'super draft' yet.

What I can say is it a very good draft for talls - Ballenden (BL ac.), Brander (GWS ac.), De Koning, Hayes, McLean, Coleman-Jones, Wooller, Balta are all very good for example - and there are some gem mids like Lochie O'Brien, Jack Higgins, Darcy Fogerty and James Worpel.

Best player at the moment IMO is Jaiydn Stephenson, a 188cm spring-heeled kid from the Eastern Ranges. He can play absolutely anywhere; he's quick, a beautiful kick, has a bit of mongrel and a leap that would make Superman feel insignificant.

Go easy; Steele hasn't even played a game for us yet. Good way to make him feel welcome. Sheesh

Will Bolton still be there at pick 23?

Liked the look of him the other week and is now the type of player we need to give us the outside speed/run and a bit of X factor

You like Florent and Scharenberg?

Campaigner you know I do. But seriously if we add those three we would be set in the midfield for years and years. Maybe take one of the high quality mid FA's next year if we can convince them to join us but if we didn't, we could still survive. Think about our mid options; Armo, Steven, Ross, Dunstan, Acres, Billings, Gresham, Steele, Stevens, Brodie, Florent and Scharenberg. Jack Steven, Jade Gresham, Blake Acres, Ollie Florent. There's some serious speed, spread and agility in that group. Add in Savage for speed and running capacity as well potentially. Armo, Dunstan, Steele, Brodie. A combination of mid sized and tall contested bulls. Seb Ross is a great all round mid with time and excellent decision making, similar to Tom Mitchell for me. All clean hands and good - very good kicks. Billings can rotate through the forward line and a bit on the wing. Scharenberg if he can develop well can become a very handy mid-utility type IMO. Great goal sense, good decision maker. That looks like a big group of very well balanced mids to me.

Hard not to like any of them . I reckon Schazza is a Seb Ross type, quality mid with out huge x factor but plenty of solid service.

Ok Lads , what range do you think Jack Scrimshaw will go at , i like the look of him , he reminds me of the Bont a bit
Nothing like the Bont really.

Bontempelli was tall midfielder that just kept on growing, but was always an inside-leaning dynamic accumulator.

Scrimshaw is a more-talented Jason Gram, and that's no criticism, at his best Gram would have won a Norm Smith if we'd saluted in 2009.

Scrimshaw relies on his (admittedly vast) talent rather than graft, and to me doesn't have the frame to generously fill out. If he learns to take the best option, rather than the best-looking flashy one, he will cut teams apart from half back or the wing, but he isn't ever likely to win much contested ball.

Essentially;
Ceiling: (better) Jason Gram
Floor: Aaron Fiora

Thanks anyway for the info

No dramas.

The Bont is always the go-to when you see a midfield type who's 190cm-plus, but in this case it's wide of the mark IMO.

He actually reminds me of Dunstan in his U18 year as well, just did whatever was required for the team. Would drift to halfback and help set up play, would go forward to stoppages inside 50 and snag the occasional goal. He's got a bit of height on Dunstan but will need a bit of time to develop physically, even though he's not skinny. Rate Dunstan higher but would still love to get Scharenberg in and see what we could make him.

Scharenberg obviously has plenty going for him, but I do see some very strong criticism of his kicking around the traps, so if we were selecting in the early 20's range and were happy to take someone with dodgy kicking, I reckon we might be better off with a Powell-Pepper, who I reckon gives us something that we don't have as much of as what Schazza would give us, in explosiveness, line-breaking ability and hurt-factor. Also meant to have very strong leadership qualities, which would be a nice bonus.

Certainly wouldn't be unhappy if we landed Scahz tho.

Draft order starting to take shape with a few more moves to have it all fall into place.

Wouldn't be surprised if we happen to land back in the first rd ! Would be the greatest trade period in our history !!

If we get pick 5, maybe we could hope for:

Ess: Brodie
GWS: McGrath
GC bid: Bowes
Bris: Ainsworth
Saints: McCluggage

Hopefully if GWS have pick 5 Setterfield will have been bid on by then.

If not, will they have enough points to pick up all their academy talent if they've used their first two picks on non-academy picks? Will they also have enough list spots, given they have to drop from 44 to 40 next season?

They're at 38 currently (https://www.draftguru.com.au/lists/2017) with at least one or two more still to trade out (Marchbank, Pickett, Stewart). Looks like they should be fine.

If that's the case, seems unlikely we'd want two first round picks to take talls at this stage in our rebuild. Surely then we're doing something else with the picks - or as this article says (http://www.theroar.com.au/2016/10/17/afl-trades-st-kilda-setting-humongous-trade/), maybe we'll save it to make a big play for someone.

If we can get 5 or 6 and keep 23, SPS and Venables would be a wet dream IMO. Think if we keep our 2 picks next year I'd be trading the worst one and 2018 first for a gun with a second coming back, still leaves us a good pick to add another mid to develop and gives us hopefully a gun in Kelly or Shiel.

Any love out there for Jordan Ridley?

At the young end (still 17) and seems to be still improving .. looks a likely type to me but have not seen much of any of these kids... so just asking those who have

Any chance we take him at 23 ?
Any change he is there at 36?

(assuming we keep those picks)

Barrels is a big fan although a bit on the short side for him at 192 but still.....

Big fan of Ridley. Tall, athletic, skilful; had a strong Championships too.

The "195/95" thing is sooo 2014. ;)

I like the idea of Ridley at 36. ( or maybe even 50).
Seems like there is a chance he could play midfield but at the worst a useful utility to replace Dempster.
