Surely we don't get another KPB. We need mids still.
really?
Didnt we just get Steele and Stevens?
I mean, sure, if mid is best available... but if we like a KPD then why not?
I think our mids could develop in the next 2 years to be both top notch and deep.
Acres, Ross, Billings, Steele, Gresh, Dunstan could all be close to A-grade, with Armitage and Steven and now Stevens the older guys.
I would be surprised if any of that group of 6 dont make it... All except Ross are at the age where most players are on an upward trajectory...
that is without mentioning other more speculative possibilities on our list... or midfileder types like Newnes and McKenzie
So sure, if a mid we rate is available at 23/36 we take them.
But if we rate someone else, we are not going to ignore them to take a mid. We are not desperate for midsby any stretch

Yes we just got Steels and Stevens but didn't we just get Carlisle and Brown and there are only 2 tall KPB in a side compared to around 12 mids which suggests we need more mids. And yes those mids could be close to A grade but they are just as close to C grade at the moment. We are certainly more desperate for class mids than any other position on the ground at the moment apart from a class running back with sheer pace.
well we are not likely to get ``class mids" at the picks we have, 23 and 36.
So, why not just try to get AFL standard players rather than mids playing for Sandy?
If we rate a mid highly at that pick, take them... but if we rate a KPD or a HFF, grab them.
They will take a few years to develop anyway..
Main thing is to get good AFL players, not Sandy players

Venables.Whats the real dangerzone pick we can take?
Is there a boom or bust player we can take at 23 who has the talent to be a superstar but maybe is still there because of risks involved?
Thoughts Barrels ?
Well I hope Brown gets to his max of two years seeing as he's got that on a contract. With 23 and 36.
Its a tough one in terms of what do you draft. Yes, the old saying is draft the best player.
But I have a feeling 23 and 36 will be a mid and a key defender because I think Brown will only last 2 seasons max.
23 - could possibly get a Griffin Logue as a slider, Brennan Cox highly rated KPD from SA
36 - J. Scharenberg extremely underrated/J. Graham. Possible to be available.
We land either of these players we leave the 2016 trade/draft period thieves.
Kerr is an Oakleigh Chargers and St Kevin's kid.The way I see it the following players will probably be gone by pick 13 or so.
Mc Luggage, McGrath, Bowes (GC),Brody,Ainsworth,English,Petrovski-Seton,Setterfield,Taranto,Perryman,Scrimshaw,Scheer,Marshall
That leaves players like Simpkin , Venables, Logue, Berry, Florent ,Rotham a possibility but unlikely.
So then possible for our first draft pick we have. ( If my second hand tiny descriptions are bad let me know - but i'd rather focus on negatives now than after the draft ).
Bolton: A small forward from W.A. Magic with the ball, but may have a weak defensive game and not have the traits to ever go through the midfield.
Gallucci: A 183cm general mid/fwd/def possibly with inconsistent kicking.
Battle: A 192cm key forward, not particularly agile.
Kerr: A 194cm forward from W.A. Don't know much about him.
Witherden: A Medium Defender with good skills but average pace.
Scharenberg: A medium paced inside mid, but with good skills. From S.A.
Powell-Pepper: A 188cm Utility from W.A. Known to turn it over by foot.
Clarke: 187cm Inside mid, good hands not so good feet. Wins contested ball.
Villis: South Australian small defender.
Drew: Very very good inside mid with iffy foot skills.
Fisher: 175cm W.A. Sounds like not much at all to dislike except at 175cm 61kg, most of the WAFL players could throw him round.
He's a competitor alright, there's no issues there.Thank you. Although I respectfully disagree, I appreciate your insights.
I just think SPP has that competitive instinct, which will help him find a place in the AFL (even if he turns out to be a somewhat limited footballer).

His decision making is hit and miss though, and his kicking is average to atrocious. Have a really close look at it here...

Who knows what will be around still at pick 36, Luke Parker 2.0 hopefully.Love that line-breaking run from SPP and his ability to bust through packs. Would totally understand why if we didn't pick him up if avail, but if we do I'll be really excited to see him play for us- especially since he's got the size and endurance to be able to play as soon as R1, if good enough.
Well that's obvious but if we rate a mid the same as a KPD then surely we get the mid. You can fluke stars at any pick but yes its less and less likely with lower picks.
Good sign that he was playing seniors tho and also good to see that he was having plenty of shots for goal and kicking regular goals. Those numbers aren't so bad if he was playing mostly forward, either.totally agree, although this is what worries me about SPP, for someone that is in an ok-good WAFL side with the body thats good to go now:

We aren't ever going to agree on the kicking mate, but he's got a bit of the Dustys about him.So harsh on his kicking. I actually think there are poorer kicks around his mark and even higher placed draftees but they dont get the same criticism
His ability to line break and kick a very good goal would be handy
My major concern isnt his kicking or decision making, its the consistency and being able to have an impact regularly as a full time mid. Hes too hot and cold for someone who is already there physically.

Interesting that Cal has us taking him at 23:
St Kilda
Pick 23: The Saints traded out of the first round and gained multiple second-round selections, plus extra first-round presence next year. Powerful midfielder Sam Powell-Pepper could be an option at their first choice, No.23. The West Australian is a busy, tough, bullocking midfielder who barges through traffic and has a great athletic profile. Another who come into consideration if the Saints want to beef up their young tall stocks is 196cm defender Elliott Himmelberg. He has been off the radar after suffering a leg injury mid-season but has talent. He’s the younger brother of GWS pick-up Harrison, but is not tied to a northern academy.
Around the mark: Will Hayward, Alex Witherden, Brennan Cox

I reckon that the best 22 thread highlights the fact that we're getting some serious depth happening and as such I reckon we are at a point where we can have a bit of a free hit at someone with some real x-factor. Someone who is a bit more boom or bust. If we go the conservative route there's every chance we'll get someone who won't crack the 22 for the next couple of years and may never really amount to much as a result, whereas if we gamble on someone who is a bit more boom or bust, we might not lose much if they bust, but could gain a hell of lot if they end up booming.
