List Mgmt. Draft Discussion 2016

Interesting they talk about him being a midfielder, has anyone actually seem him play as a pure midfielder?
Fair point. By his own admission has played mostly defence with some half forward.
I think the call is made mostly by his attributes and a little on recent mid form. Surely that half-forward to midfield rotation player is the position that suits him best. Goal-kicking test winner at the combine with running speed/capacity

A lot of the Bombers chances depend on how their players that have been out for a year can recover . If you take a player who gets injured out for a year it usually takes them at least a few months to get back into the weekly grind. We will have the same problem with Carlisle but we can hide him a bit because there is only one. People expecting him to come into the Saints side and play his best footy will be in for a shock I think . It might take him a year to get right again.

Ari Sakeson .... if he's not drafted, particularly if the Swans decide not to draft him given their interest.

Otherwise these guys from the Sandy Dragons may be considered:
Hamish Brayshaw
Corey Lyons
Goy Lok
Lachlan Filipovic
Harrison Burt
Josh Trew
Reuben Hayward
Darcy James

Goy Lok would likely come at a discount similar to the current bidding system as he's from a non-English speaking background.

Barclay Miller will play for the Dragons next year and IIRC is currently on a scholarship with us anyway as an international rookie with a basketball background, as does Mitch McCarthy who we've nominated as an indigenous rookie.

Baker-Thomas is in much the same boat although he plays for Sandy Zebras and is over 18.

Is there really any point have Baker-Thomas he's not up to it .

Re ACT Sam Fisher.

I think you will find that there will be a lot more high quality recruits coming through the system from Canberra in the coming years. GWS have really taken on the other 2 codes in Canberra and their junior development program is brilliant!
Agreed, 2017 will have a few prospects who could get picked up led by AIS academy player Jack Powell.
Not sure we'd have too much interest now with how trade period played out and the picks we're taking into the draft, but had heard that we had a bit of interest in Jordan Harper during the year as another Canberra kid.

In the phantom draft thread (https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/st-kilda-board-phantom-draft.1150940/), pretty obviously Alex Witherden was the best player available at our pick 23, a bit of a slider to end up there.

Now obviously that's not representative of the real draft, especially because there was no academy bidding. So surely he goes earlier, especially if 23 ends up being more like 25-27.

But he's a running half-back, so he highlights a general question. We've got a lot of running half-backs on the list:

Newnes, Roberton, Savage, Gilbert, Webster, McKenzie, White, Rice

Hard to see how all of these fit into the same side now or in the future. Surely we shouldn't draft another one, even if Witherden was available at our pick?

SPP and Bolton were gone by our pick but ideally one of them are still there by our pick. looking at Knightmare and bishops phantom draft we could take SPP or Florent with Bolton around the pick too. It seems SPP is a bit of a bolter at this stage so he might be gone by our pick but hopefully Florent or Bolton are still there. I think we need run with our pick so Bolton Florent or SPP are hopefully there for our first round pick.

With our original pick it is unlikely that any of the following players would have been available to us.
McLuggage, McGrath, Bowes, Brody, Ainsworth, Taranto, Perryman, English, Scrimshaw.

So far I have not seen a serious phantom where any of theses players are available to us:
Petrovski-Seton, Scheer, Marshall, Setterfield , Logue, Simpkin, Florent, Venables.
There would have to be some serious Carlton/Boekhorst type crap happening ( in multiple teams ) to get one.

It seems likely that 7 of :
Gallucci ,Berry, Rotham, Hayward, Battle , Bolton
Kerr, Witherden, Scharenburg, Villa, Ridley, C Cox, Powell-Pepper.

Will be available at our pick. ( First line less likely ).

If i'm correct above, none of the players we miss out on between 10 and 22/23 are screaming "superstar" so it means we've done absolutely the right thing in making the Hawks trade.
Pretty much if we kept 10 we would have needed academy bids and maybe a reach for Marshall or maybe Logue to get one of the top players from the draft. otherwise we would have take someone that could have been there at 20 maybe 23.

Would Kobe Mutch be worth a bid at our pick. There is some talk that GWS may be looking more at needs now, and that Mutch "aint it". On the other hand if it comes down to just matching points with late picks , why wouldn't they.

I'm of a mind that all clubs should bid on the academy players as early as they would risk it, just to stop the advantage from being worse than it already is.

Why don't I like Ainsworth much?

Here's his reasons for the bloody nasty elbow he threw at Calder's James Peters, breaking his jaw:

"My intentions weren't to get him high. I was trying to prevent his run and make it known that I was there," Ainsworth says.

"I'm not by any means blaming it on him – I did the wrong thing – but his centre of gravity dropped, which led to my misconduct. It was more of a technique problem.

"During the game I was thinking about it a fair bit. I didn't mean it, but I know it looked pretty bad
."

A lip service apology that is effectively 'it was really HIS fault.'

On pure ability would you rank Ainsworth higher than Brodie and Taranto?

Hard to say because they're all very different.

- Ainsworth is the bastard love child of Jake Stringer and Hayden Ballantyne.

- Brodie is David Mundy with Lenny's intangible heroism.

- Taranto is a strange mix of Tim Membrey and Scott Pendlebury.

They're all matchwinners in their own way, but with very different skill sets.

Possibly fits the bill.
Although he probably isn't any chance to end anywhere else than the Giants so we may not bother

Its no bother, they just read the name out. Its more of a bother for the AFL having to get the other club up and interrupting their televised draft bullshit. If all the clubs actually took that attitude, they'd give GWS even more of a leg up.
I'm of the firm opinion that all of the clubs should bid on any player they'd be happy to take at that pick.

He's the type you'd love in your clouds though.

Came here to post this. Not to mention another striking charge in the same game. Also was told he had a bad attitude when he broke his wrist. The flog factor is high with this one.

Draft edition of Inside Football is now out, do yourself a favour a grab it.

Some snippets;
- Begley is 185.5cm 96kg. Big boy.
- Powell-Pepper a strong 186.5cm 90kg.
- Berry comes in at 191cm 81.8kg.
- Witherden is 186cm 80kg.
- Ridley tall at 192cm 79.7kg.
- Narkle 180cm 77.8kg.
- McLarty, the forgotten man, 196.8cm 90.9kg.
- Cox 181cm 78.6kg.
- Venables a nice size at 185cm 82kg.

Logue suggests in a mini-interview that they all measured a bit short at the Combine.
