Acres and Goddard don't slide in their respective drafts and we might have taken Hartung and Lamb? :fearful:

Don't mind that bit of luck. Would prefer it on GF day, but take what we can get.
We were never going to take Lamb, not in the national draft with the picks we had.

These detailed write-up's by grundog 11 months ago make for interesting reading. Especially for someone like Witherden who has missed most of the season. Also interesting that Sproule went as well as he did last year. Sounds like he's dropped off a bit this year.

What type of player is witherden in your opinion ARR. I havent seen a lot of him so I'd be keen to get your opinion ARR!!!

What spot would he fill for us?

Basically at 23 we'll pick up someone who Western Sydney, Brisbane and Gold Coast don't rate, don't need or are a bit nervous about. Think about it, of the 22(ish) picks before us, 10 or so of them will be used by those three clubs plundering this draft pool (and their academy pick-ups).

Also factor in that only five picks before ours are Victorian clubs (Essendope with 2, Footscray, Norf and Carltank). Increases the likelihood we'll be able to pick up a local, one who might be regarded as a bit of a flight risk. Brisbane and Gold Coast in particular have reason to be frightened of Vic kids.

From what I've read and seen of him, I'd say he is basically a Jack Newnes clone (similar size, really top-notch kick, good running game, tough, etc). Newnesey of course started off across HB (where Witherden has played most of his recent footy), but has since progressed to the wing and I reckon there's a fair chance Witherden would also be able to do that (that was apparently the plan for him this year, until he broke his leg).

I wouldn't normally be interested in yet another of his type, but it sounds like he might be that bit better than all those we have (including Newnes) and bring that run and skill that we want, so if he's available, he might just be too good to pass on. Sounds like he was well in top 15 calculations before he broke his leg, so he could be a genuine bargain at 23ish and that "slider" we want.

At worst, he could be our Joey replacement long term off HB.

I'm not sold on the huge guys, who are the elite KPF 198 and over? Daniher, Tippet, Peter Wright, Darcy Moore, Jenkins etc. None are the killer 100 goal a season types. If they can ruck and drift forward that's a different type to me. The best KPFs always seem to be around 195cm give or tale a couple.

fair comment , at one point I compiled some stuff about goals kicked by people of what height.
I thought 189 was too short as well , but Membrey ( along with Crameri ) proved the exception.
Kennedy is really the tallest effective forward.

I don't know anything about this draft. However, there must be a reason that we wanted pick 61 from the dogs and were prepared to delist an extra player use it. It would make sense if we had a specific player in mind that we are highly confident will be around.

Disagree. None of the players we delisted would have played in our next grand final side so we lose nothing by letting them go. Even a speculative pick at 61 is more useful from that point of view.

Great post! I think the main one is Florent, who apparently wants to stay in Victoria, which is totally understandable in his position.

I think he is the player that best suits out needs but remains unlikely at our pick.

He would have to get through North, Doggies and Bombers.

It is hard to see him getting past North as he suits a need for them too, as they lose Boomer and Wells, but they might feel they cover that slightly with Hvorat and Ahern (long term). We would have to hope they pick up a slider like Brodie or go with Venables off potential and the family connection.

Think Doggies have a lot of his type with the outside run. If Marshal or Battle are there, they might be considered priority.

Similar with Bombers, if the pick up McCluggage, they already have Merrett, Parish and Fantasia, so might not be a priority. Think they still pick him if best available but if Battle is there might suit needs better.

Hopefully Florent or another slider gets through to 23.

So let's look at who's ahead of us, what their fans think they need and what the AFL site thinks they need:

Adelaide Cows - pick 13
Explosive inside mid. Classy inside-outside mid. Small forward to replace Betts long-term. Maybe a good intercepting medium/small defender with a good boot?

The priority: More depth in the midfield, specifically outside run, would be perfect, especially with veteran Scott Thompson to retire after next season. - Lee Gaskin

Dream draft according to Cal Twomey: Adelaide needs some more midfielders, so the Crows will have their fingers crossed that Will Brodie slips through the top 10 and is available at their choice. It appears unlikely to happen, but there is a slim chance he gets past that opening batch of picks.

Brisbane - picks 3, 16, 21, 22
midfield class, outside run, small forward, leadership.

Nobel: Wants a running defender who can play with Cuts and get lots of possessions and midfielders to develop with Schache and Co

Fagan:Wants a Small forward with pace who also brings pressure and midfielders to develop with Schache and Co

The priority: The Lions need talented midfielders pushing through to support their ball-winners. A back-up ruckman who is ready for senior football is the most pressing need, in case Stefan Martin is injured or suspended. - Dinny Navaratnam

Dream draft according to Cal Twomey: At pick three the Lions can't really go wrong. But their ideal scenario would be getting Hugh McCluggage, the goalkicking midfielder who is in the mix for pick No.1. McCluggage would bring that much-needed class and poise to Brisbane's midfield group.

Carltank - pick 5

I expect Carlton to be looking predominantly for midfielders in this draft.

Midfielders midfielders and more midfielders we don't bat deep unfortunately therefore thats whats needed to help out the likes of Murph cripps curnow and co unlike Gibbs who will be traded next year anyhow..

The priority: The Blues need more class in their midfield, while players who can kick goals would be highly sought after. - Dinny Navaratnam

Dream draft according to Cal Twomey: If the Blues bid pick No.5 on Giants academy midfielder Will Setterfield and GWS doesn't match, Carlton will have an enjoyable start to draft night. He is a tall, athletic option with plenty of polish. Setterfield's Sandringham Dragons teammate Tim Taranto might be the next best thing for the Blues as a goalkicking midfielder.

Essendope - picks 1, 20

Half-back disposal machine would complement what we have now well.

I expect we will mostly go for mids with our top 4 picks this year. Min of 2 mids.

The priority: Another key forward is the obvious hole on the list, plus some more pace and class through the midfield. - Callum Twomey

Purple Peril - pick 7

Future ruck & kpp. But if next years draft is better for kpp I'd say we will pick English then the best available.

Skilled, classy midfielder (SPS), HB or pocket (Logue/Rotham), Ruck

The priority: It might not come with their first pick, but a young ruckman to develop quickly is needed. More young midfielders are also required, with a particular preference for an inside ball-winner who also moves outside. They can get this type of player at the top of the draft. - Nathan Schmook

Dream draft according to Cal Twomey: The Dockers looked for WA products during the trade period and might also be able to add one with their first draft choice. Sam Petrevski-Seton will have to be high on their thinking as a classy midfielder, while Griffin Logue is also likely to be in the mix. Logue could play right away as an athletic key defender.

Gold Coast Runaways - picks 4, 6, 8, 10 (these'll shape the draft and ultimately our picks)

My guess - Suns take Bowes and Scheer plus two Victorians from the same TAC Cup team - say Taranto and Scrimshaw (2MP / Touk Miller model)

Ashcroft and Clayton have said we need midfielders, potentially a 3rd tall forward, and maybe a half-back to replace Mal (which Scrimshaw does cover), and we are perfectly placed to get 2-3 of the best mids in the draft on top of Scrimshaw and a Hayward or Berry or someone.

The priority: You can never have too many quality midfielders. A small, defensive forward to feed off Lynch and Wright could also be handy. - Lee Gaskin

Dream draft according to Cal Twomey: The best result for the Suns will be not having to match a bid for Jack Bowes until the Swans' No.9. That will allow Gold Coast to take three of the best players in the land before they secure the talented academy product with pick 10. Tim Taranto, Tim English and Jack Scrimshaw are among the possible selections. They seem likely to take a mix of types.

Greater Western Plastics - picks 2, 15

pick #2 goes on McGrath/McCluggage/Ainsworth
Setterfield gets bid on around 5 or 6 and uses picks #15 & #37 (with a residual lower pick)
Perryman gets bid on around 10 and uses picks #39, #45, #52 & #55 (with a residual lower pick)

The priority: GWS has an excellent best 22-25, but they did lose depth player Caleb Marchbank and the awesome Jack Steele. But they are well placed in the draft and with one of Hugh McCluggage or Andrew McGrath as well as Will Setterfield likely headed to the club, they look set to inject more class. - Ashley Browne

Dream draft according to Cal Twomey: Speedy half-back Andrew McGrath getting through to pick No.2 would be an ideal result for the Giants. He is ready to play at the top level after a terrific year. The Giants will be hoping bids come as late as possible for academy pair Will Setterfield and Harry Perryman. If they are later than expected, it might allow them to match a second-round bid for Isaac Cumming without going into a points deficit.

Norf - pick 11

priority 1. Pace and skills in the midfield (Petrevski Seton if he slips), Cedric Cox, Sam Powell Pepper
priority 2. Key Back (Logue)

Hard running inside mid with some outside game, run and carry players, another ruck to develop and probably another KPD.

The priority: North's engine room is workmanlike – especially without Daniel Wells and Brent Harvey – and an injection of pace and class wouldn't go astray. - Travis King

Dream draft according to Cal Twomey: Oliver Florent ticks both boxes for pace and class. The Sandringham Dragons midfielder finished his season in terrific form in his side's premiership win and was then best afield in the NAB All Stars game. He uses the ball nicely, has a turn of speed and is creative when in possession. He should be in consideration for pick 11.

Port - 14, 17

Inside mid(s) and a guy like Battle would be a good draft.

Inside mid and a forward... then mids mids

The priority: Another high-end midfielder is needed to complement Robbie Gray and Ollie Wines, as is a key forward to eventually replace Westhoff. - Lee Gaskin

Dream draft according to Cal Twomey: Port is well positioned to grab a midfielder with one of its two first-round picks, and Jordan Gallucci could be in that mix. He brings pace and ball-winning ability. Another good ball user might be on Port's radar as well, bringing classy half-back Alex Witherden into the mix.

Sydney - picks 9, 19

1. Outside run mainly, ideally with good kicking skills.
2. 3rd tall forward (possibly Battle/Kerr if available)

Outside run/skills. Need a gun winger/half-forward.

The priority: Toby Nankervis's departure to Richmond creates a vacancy in the ruck, so the Swans will be scouring the country for big blokes. - Ashley Browne

Dream draft according to Cal Twomey: It's doubtful the Swans would draft Tim English with their first selection, and he's the only ruckman in that range. A key defender might also be a priority, bringing athletic big man Griffin Logue into their thinking at pick No.9. He will be ready to line up at senior level next year.

Wet Toast - pick 12

If we took 4 picks maybe:

- mid of any variety
- small forward
- Waterman
- tall of any kind. Although a ruck or third tall defender may suit us well.

2 mids of any (good) kind, Waterman and project ruck or Key forward.

The priority: Assuming Lycett doesn't miss too much of next season, in the short-to-medium-term another quality onballer with some legs peed would be ideal. - Travis King

Dream draft according to Cal Twomey: There isn't a lot of speedy midfield options at the top end of the draft. Jordan Gallucci brings that but No.12 might be a touch too high for him, while Jy Simpkin is at this stage more of a half-forward than midfielder. Athletically, Jarrod Berry might fit the bill. He can play in a number of spots, run all day and has a genuine tough streak.

Footscray Premiers - pick 18

Midfield runs deep and shouldn't be a concern but knowing Dalrymple..

Ideally a burst mid and a quick KPD, but realistically we'll target best available

The priority: A key forward would be on top of the Dogs' draft shopping list, but a developing ruckman should also be keenly sought. A key defender and a skillful midfielder wouldn't go astray either. - Ryan Davidson

Dream draft according to Cal Twomey: The Bulldogs brought in Travis Cloke to bolster their key forward stocks, and could also draft the best tall goalkicker in the draft. Todd Marshall is a chance to get through to their first pick (No.18) and although he has been inconsistent he would be a nice player to let develop physically before bringing into the top level.

tl;dr Teams before us and likely needs: mids (Adelaide, Brisbane, Carlton, Gold Coast, North Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Sydney, West Coast), West Australians (Fremantle), no idea (Essendon, GWS), key forward (Western Bulldogs)
