List Mgmt. Draft Discussion 2016

There seems to be a fair bit of talk that WC will grab him with their first (pick 12ish), which I think would make a fair bit of sense for them.

The 3 I'm probably most keen on are him, Florent and Marshall.
There's gonna be much higher rated guys at that pick.
Locals or not.
Would seem a fair reach

Huge 'go home' concerns over Ollie Florent. Very unlikely he goes interstate and some possibility he slides...

Still doubtful he makes it to us.

Would essendon look at him at pick 20? Would he get that far?
Anything's possible, especially since the top 22 is dominated by interstate teams. If there's early bids on Setterfield, Bowes and possibly more, that'll eat up Gold Coast and GWS's picks and cause players to drift. There's also the Grundy effect, a player doesn't get taken around the mark expected, others don't consider him as part of their needs and so they plummet.

This draft is really fascinating.
So much still unknown.
Great call. Cant remember another draft like it

Does anyone know much about ryan. Sam has him pretty high in his first round calculations or atleast much higher than I would have thought

You'd have to think there would be a really serious chance of Florent getting to us. Interstate clubs (with 17 of the first 22 picks) wouldn't necessarily be concerned about the "go home factor" I don't think, I think it would be more him saying he doesn't want to leave his family at this point in time and them being compassionate about his situation and respecting his wishes.

Given that he played for Sandy, you'd think we're probably the closest club to where he lives, so we could be a match made in heaven for him. Like Robbo a few years back.

If Essendon get McCluggage in particular you'd think they'd have lot less need for a Florent type (they're pretty similar types) and Cheeseburger reckons there is a lot of talk that Essendon will pick a "smokey" at 20.

Imagine if we get Ollie at 23 after we were thinking he'd possibly be our best bet at 10 if we kept it! :)

Hopefully he can be our Goddard pick ala 2014 :)

Ryan played VFL this year and is apparently elite at reading the play across HB and taking intercept marks and rebounding. Has long been linked to Sydney at 19 on BF. Could come in and play immediately for them and free up Mills to play midfield if they want him to.

Coming from a complete novice with NFI, based solely on reading here and elsewhere, here are my top 5 preferences in order for 23:

1) Venables (almost zero chance we get him lasting to 23 I know)
2) Florent (also unlikely but you never know your luck in a big city as my dear old mum would say)
3) SPP
4) Battle
5) I'll go with Ridley bc I can't be bothered reading any more profiles...

Emma Quayle is a gun.

ST KILDA

In: Nathan Brown, Jason Holmes (rookie upgrade), Jack Steele, Koby Stevens.
Out: Tom Curren, Luke Delaney, Sam Fisher, Tom Lee, Brodie Murdoch, Brenton Payne, Josh Saunders, Cameron Shenton, Eli Templeton.
Draft picks: 23, 36, 60.

TALL FORWARDS: Nick Riewoldt, Josh Bruce, Paddy McCartin, Tim Membrey.
TALL DEFENDERS: Jake Carlisle, Nathan Brown, Hugh Goddard, Nick Coughlan, Darragh Joyce (rookie)
SMALL/MEDIUM FORWARDS: Jack Billings, Maverick Weller, Jack Lonie, Jack Sinclair, Jade Gresham, Darren Minchington.
SMALL/MEDIUM DEFENDERS: Dylan Roberton, Sean Dempster, Jarryn Geary, Shane Savage, Sam Gilbert, Jimmy Webster, Nathan Wright, Brandon White, Bailey Rice, Ray Connellan (rookie)
MIDFIELDERS: Jack Steven, David Armitage, Leigh Montagna, Seb Ross, Jack Newnes, Luke Dunstan, Blake Acres, Daniel McKenzie, Koby Stevens, Jack Steele, Nathan Freeman, Nick O'Kearney (rookie).
RUCKS: Tom Hickey, Billy Longer, Jason Holmes, Lewis Pierce.

The St Kilda rebuild is a few years in, and they have pretty good coverage in most parts of the ground now. The addition of Carlisle, after a 12-month wait, will be significant. Nathan Brown will add depth and Hugh Goddard is an up-and-comer making his way back from a bad injury. But there is room for them to add another developing key back. One with a bit of pace off the mark would be handy, and they're one of a few clubs who could look at the versatile Elliot Himmelberg or even Mitch McCarthy at a later pick. Jack Maibaum isn't obviously athletic but keeps up, has beaten some good forwards this year and competes no matter what. Jarrod Berry could be there, too. While the Saints have some classy small and mid-sized forwards who will do some midfield time – Jade Gresham has already started – they have spent more than a year trying to get Nathan Freeman up and going and could still do with more pace. Sam Powell-Pepper could be one they look at and, like Maibaum, is a competitor who gives his all. So is Daniel Venables, who could also rotate between the forward and midfield lines. His injuries might see him slip to a point where he is too good to pass up. Could Oliver Florent sneak through? The Saints could also keep planning for life after Nick Riewoldt and look at a player such as Josh Battle, whose has both the ability and the willingness to cover ground and work opponents over. He could fit into a forward line featuring Paddy McCartin, Josh Bruce and Tim Membrey. So could Todd Marshall - possibly the better fit - on the off chance he makes it into the 20s.

Spot on Barrels, even though footy is a business would take a very callous interstate club to draft Florent under the circumstances, especially after everything they have been told in interviews.

Bloody tall forward line if we added Todd Marshall @ 198 to go with Bruce @ 197 and McCartin @ 195.

Josh Battle might be the better forward option but it will best available at pick 23 and I'm certain there will be some real surprises among the sliders. Its highly possible that someone we rate in the top ten will still be there at 23.

With so many clubs have multi picks in the first 25 so I reckon its almost impossible to accurately predict draft order and any phantom drafts will be "hail mary" exercises.

That said - Emma usually gets very close by the end of the week.

What's the appeal to Florent though really? Doesn't get much of the ball, apparently isn't a great kick :drunk:
He started to really blossom and get more of the ball late in the year though, culminating in his BOG performance in the All Stars game, where he got I think it was 29 disposals (in a shortened match), against the creme of the crop, playing in the guts in Brodie's absence.

Is just the type we could do with I reckon, as he can play inside and out, midfield and forward and I believe has better kicking skills than the likes of SPP, Gallucci, Bolton, Scharenberg and Clarke.

Actually not that far off being a taller and thinner version of Gresh I reckon, with the elite agility and with the similar roles they can both play. I went into this year thinking it would be ideal if we could get a taller version of Jade, with our higher pick this year, and he could just about be it (but with a later pick!).

Could make it harder again for Sincs to get games unless he really steps up going forward though.

According to Landsburger in today's paper, Geelong (who have the pick after us at 24) interviewed Florent yesterday, so if that's true, it's a fair sign that he's a serious chance to get through to the 20's.

Tested extremely well at the combine, posting a 15.1 beep, a really good agility score and a 3.02sec 20m sprint.

What Brett Anderson had to say about him:

16. Oliver FLORENT
Ht: 182.0cm | Wt: 74.4kg | Outside Midfielder | Sandringham Dragons

Until the All-Star game, Florent threatened to tear games apart at all levels – nationals, TAC Cup, AGS school footy – but never really did. In the All-Star game, it all came together. He can play both inside and out, he breaks tackles, and has good footy smarts. At times he can appear to be a lazy kick, as he lets go of the ball loosely in his ball drop, but its not something that can’t be cleaned up easily. His father passed away in September after a long cancer battle, so his performances for the past few years have come under personal duress, which makes his development all the more impressive.

Strengths: smarts, breaking tackles, agility, resilience.

Needs to improve: contested ball, kicking (ball drop).

Injuries: None.

Combine test results: Repeat Sprint – 26.06. 20m Sprint – 3.02. Agility – 8.26.Beep Test – 15.1. 3km TT – 10:45.

Draft range: 11-23.

What they say: “There’s a lot of upside physically when he gets into a full-time program. If you have a look at some of early games his effectiveness and ability to hit the scoreboard and be involved in scoring chains was outstanding. That is where he is even more exciting.” – Sandringham Dragons talent manager Ryan O’Connor.

Emma Quayle's write-up:

Oliver Florent (Sandringham Dragons/Beaumaris/Mentone GS)

Born: 22.7.1998

Height: 183cm

Weight: 74kg

AFL bio: Very competitive smooth-moving medium midfielder with line-breaking speed. A talented junior tennis player, he's now focusing on AFL. Impressed for Vic Metro, averaging 12 disposals in the NAB AFL under-18 championships.

"Ollie lost his father this year and I can't heap enough praise on him and his family for how they've handled the year. I wish they could have given out two best on ground medals on grand final day because he must have come very, very close. He has some elite attributes and I think he's a very exciting prospect moving full-time into an AFL environment and having some time to recover and move past the stresses of this year. He's very athletic and wonderfully agile. I think he'll have a good pace-endurance mix and will only get stronger. We probably didn't help him with his possession count at times because we wanted to use his run in the forward line and on the outside, but I thought he showed in the grand final that he can be a very good inside mid. Give him a couple of years and the gym and he'll only improve."

Florent would have to be a realistic chance to slide to us.

We have pick 23, with 17 of the preceding 22 picks made by non-Victorian clubs.

Essendon won't take him with pick 1 & Carlton won't use pick 5 on him.

It is likely pick 11 could be a bit too high for him (NM) while the Bulldogs may be looking at drafting a bigger player at pick 18.

Essendon could be the club that nabs him at 20. But Florent could possibly slip through to pick 23.

St could we score a good midfielder, (who would you like) due to the sliding effects of the father son picks causing one of the better midfielders to come to us, I would like to get another midfielder, due to they usually come quicker into the squad and can also use for back up , and trade another of our midfielders if they don't perform this year, I really like our position next year with our first to trade picks - I really think we could get a Hopper , Fife etc to replace our champ Riewoldt next year= salary cap no problem

I'm not a huge marshall fan for some reason. I prefer Battle out of the two but I guess the taller guy can ruck as well. Florent and SPP are both looking very good though

You really have to see Florent live to appreciate him,
I've seen him play about 5-7 times this season
Whilst he wont really stand out athleticlly bar his enudrance he is incredibly smart, creative plays on instinct and has a certain x factor that makes you think e could break a game open.
he just seems to play the game at a different level to others.
I find that he never ever loses one on ones even if he does he will always find a way to lay the tackle s intercept cause a tunrover or something.
he seems like a cross between gresh and harley balic
Very very difficult to tackle and always making osmething happan.
whilst he struggled for consistancy early on and throughout the chance
he showed mements of brilliance and also later on that he could put it all together
He will be a star
