From Cal Twomey's 20 young guns
My man:

Jarrod Berry
Midfielder/half-back
191cm/80kg
5/2/98
North Ballarat Rebels/Vic Country

Berry won All Australian honours last year for his work off half-back for Vic Country, but is likely to be pushed up the ground for this year's carnival. With his height, agility and strength, Berry is best as an inside midfielder who finds the ball and bursts away. He can also push forward to create an awkward match-up near goal or play across centre-half back, and has shown his leadership qualities over the past couple of years. Berry is one of a number of players in the mix as No.1 pick contenders.

Weird, because I've almost never seen him play as a midfielder.

I bow to Twomey's knowledge though.

MASSIVE day out today for Muhammad Saad, brother of GC's Adam, lifting Calder to a win over the reigning premiers Oakleigh with a 7 goal haul.

Averaging 12 disposals (70% eff.), 2.125 tackles and 1.125 goals per game before today, he's an electric 186cm 80kg half forward.

Good 'value pick' with serious wheels.

EDIT: 14 disposals today (12 contested!) and 7.1 goals.

Reckon he'd be there at our 3rd rounder?

Possible. Having a good year, but not a big possession winner and hasn't caused a lot of chatter before today.

Would be more likely if we could get into the 2nd round.

BA says no main draft. Interesting, I would have thought someone would take the punt.

There are some very nice players right up until 20. Jonty Scharenberg that late is as sweet as pie even with all the academy picks removed

Early days I know but it's interesting that whilst 2 of the players in that top 20 are Gold Coast academy players (potentially around picks 2 & 12), they currently have picks 4, 8, 21, 22, 23 & 27. Nice little block from 21 to 23 but I can't imagine they'd want to give any of that hat-trick away given the depth of the draft.

Here's how it stands right now for the first 2 rounds:

1.Essendon
2. Brisbane Lions
3. Fremantle
4. Gold Coast
5. Richmond
6. St Kilda
7. GWS (received from Collingwood in trade for Adam Treloar)
8. Gold Coast (received from Melbourne in exchange of picks)
9. Port Adelaide
10.Carlton
11. Adelaide
12. GWS
13. Western Bulldogs
14. West Coast
15. Hawthorn
16. GWS (received from Carlton in trade for Lachie Plowman, Jed Lamb, Andrew Phillips, Liam Sumner, originally from Geelong)
17. Sydney
18. North Melbourne

19. Essendon
20. Brisbane Lions
21. Gold Coast (received from Fremantle in a pick exchange)
22. Gold Coast
23. Gold Coast (received from Richmond in trade for Chris Yarran)
24. Brisbane Lions (received from St Kilda via Collingwood in trade for Nathan Freeman)
25. Collingwood
26. Melbourne
27. Gold Coast (received from Port Adelaide in trade for Charlie Dixon)
28. Carlton

If there's quality late in the first round it might be worth doing what we did last year and trade down if we can find a quality player and a pick from the same club.

I think it is disgusting and nearly corrupt how many academy players in the top 20 are available only to the plastic teams ( I know bids etc).
Its disgraceful and is making a mockery of the draft.

Even before the freebies they two have 5 picks in the top 16 picks. They then can trade out picks for academy kids to clubs for players and later draft picks. For example if they wanted a top player they could come with 2 first round picks for a player and three later picks back which can then be used as points to get a top 2 pick anyway. They actually benefit from raiding rather than taking picks on face value. It's a shame we don't have anything to trade out.

Geez if one of Marshall or Battle sneak in to the top 5 (or some other bolter, which usually happens) and we stay where we are, then we're a good chance to snag one of SPS, Brodie or McLuggage. That'd be a super result in my opinion. If we can't see one of these three slipping to us, I'd love for us to trade down (I'm looking at you, Caleb Marchbank) to that 15-20 range and pick up a Simpkin or Venables, maybe even a Rotham. Good year to finish outside the bottom three, not so good a year to not have a second rounder.

Def deeper than last year

Would love to get that pick 16 from GWS!

2017 1st for Marchbank and Pick 16 this year?

Spend Pick 6 on Will Brodie and Pick 16 on best mid available (Gallucci, Simpkin, Poholke etc).

Taranto would be useful for our contested ball problem, saw him on the weekend and he's bulked up a lot since I last saw him, doesn't get brought to ground a trusted advisor commented to me from watching him all season, works his way out of traffic well and has good disposal while not being a super polished kick or anything, hits the scoreboard as well, probably isn't in our range though unless he shoots up drastically or we manage to get a pick in between our current ones
