Gold Coast also have Melb's first pick, currently pick 9, surely they use that at least on Bowes. You're right though, they could use their first, currently pick 3 on a tall.

Geez GWS will get a haul. Just about guaranteed of half a dozen flags with all the concessions & their academy. The AFL would be loving it.
Will Setterfield and Kobe Mutch just piss me off

I'm not sure how we fit a forward tuck into our forward line with Paddy, Membrey and Bruce.

something like this:

HF Billings Bruce Membrey
F Gresham Mccartin Strnadica

push membrey high up the ground as a high marking big body option

either way sometimes you need to collect depth if its best available as you just dont know what will happen in the next 4-5 years. people were saying the same thing about lobb, how does he fit into the GWS side with all of the tall talent they had in cameron, patton, mccarthy, tomlinson etc. now look at him

personally i dont think he will be available at out pick, but lets say he is and we identify him on talent alone as the 2nd best prospect, but because we want a mid, should we really over-look him? i think its really dangerous to do that, to overlook the best talent based on positional needs so high up in the draft

Division 1 of the NAB AFL U18 Championships kicks off for Vic Metro on Monday following a first-round bye, with the team seeking to claim its first national title since 2012.

One of its brightest prospects, Daniel Venables, comes into Vic Metro’s U18 Championships campaign feeling much healthier than he has at times over the last year.

The Western Jets mid-forward is finally logging consistent game time after a 2015 season cut short by a broken leg and then hip surgery. The 17-year-old is using the chance to show the football world how dangerous he can be, booting six goals in two games for Western as a midfielder and also impacting the scoreboard playing school football for Penleigh and Essendon Grammar (PEGS).

Venables was playing for Vic Metro as an over-ager at the AFL U16 Championships last July when he broke his leg in the last minute and a half of the team’s first game of the carnival.

“It was pretty devastating,” Venables said. “It was hard to get my head around it at the start, but I had some good people around me. I guess I just came to the realisation there’s a lot worse that could’ve happened in life.

“That ended my season right then, and I had hip surgery (for a previous condition) straight after I got out of the cast. I was out for about six and a half months and by January I was back in full training.

“I got myself a running coach and I was doing running sessions while everyone was on a break through Christmas to build up the strength in my hip. I think I’m a bit quicker now because of it.

“As I was out for so long, I feel I’m refreshed now. I’m feeling good enough to hopefully peak for the U18 Championships.”

Venables thinks Vic Metro coach David Flood will use him more in the forward line during the U18 Championships, where the hard-nosed but skilful ball user can impact the scoreboard.

He hopes to emulate fellow Keilor junior, Vic Metro representative and 2014 Western Jets graduate Jayden Laverde (now at Essendon) in terms of his on-field versatility.

“I love watching Jayden play,” Venables said. “I first played in the TAC Cup when I was 16 so I played a couple of games with him (in 2014), and he went to PEGS as well.

“He’s a little bit taller than me (Laverde is 190cm, Venables 186cm), but we play in the forward line and we can both go into the midfield as well and use our speed.

“I don’t really feel like I have a main position yet, so I’m happy to swap around and I like playing both positions. I’m a hybrid, so I can be flexible.”

Venables’ flexibility extends not just across the football field, but across sports too – he was a star junior cricketer who represented Victoria at U15 level.

Like many multi-talented youngsters, Venables eventually had to make a decision about which sport to pursue. But with Australian Football Hall of Fame member Johnny Lewis as his great-grandfather and 1960s North Melbourne player Fred Robinson as his grandfather, he said the decision to choose football was “kind of natural”.

Venables will now be hoping his performances at the U18 Championships demonstrate he made a wise decision.

I'd take best available if we dont land one this year I'd trade out big time for one next year and the year after. Look at a money ball type to tie us over this year, similar to what we did with membrey and bruce. You just never know if they'll come good and then you re-adjust pleasantly from there
We don't need a tall with Carlisle coming in next year, we need midfielders, of which there are plenty early on.

Is he a fwd-mid or mid-fwd?
At this point more fwd/mid, but mostly because he's had a rough run with injury, and because he's just so dangerous when forward.

Averages 15.5 touches, 5.5 makes, 4 tackles and 3 goals per game across 2 games at TAC Cup level. Played one of those injured as well.

I like Oakleigh's Taylin Duman as a tall utility or 3rd defender too with a later pick.

And if the big ticket lads are all gone, Jack Scrimshaw and Andy McGrath are very very talented, and both Tim Taranto and Ollie Florent could jump up the rankings.

Might be a pipe dream but I'd love to get a two for the price of one deal.

Scrimshaw and Drew. Two anywhere players with an every-time attitude.
At this stage, the only chance to get a 2 for 1 deal in the 1st round is with GWS (their 1st and Geelong's 1st)...we'd need an extra 522pts on top of our 1st to make it worthwhile...which is virtually impossible without a 2nd.

Florent looked pretty skilful. When will we get to see Kayle Kirby play for Vic Country? Those two could be a deadly duo.

He's biased of course, but Sandy Dragons' talent manager likened Florent to Josh Kelly, and that's a huge wrap.

Jordy Galucci should be available at our pick and one we really should be looking at closely.
Looked good yesterday also

Tbh I'll be bloody disappointed if we don't use our first on a mid. Don't really care about best avail unless we have pick 1 & there's a clear best player.
Surely we go our usual route & draft a half back flanker that we hope will become an outside wingman type :P

Sounds like a ripper however I'd like to see him get more possies before investing a top 7 pick on him.

If we don't trade the pick then the ideal type of player is an inside outside tallish mid. I would love to trade it for a proven mid that can play 150 games but that's probably a dream.

I think, in looking at who we might go after, it's a reasonable viewpoint to consider what we need going forward. Consider;

The U23s

FB: Webster - Goddard - Wright
(22*, 49 games) - (19, 9 games) - (22, 21 games)

HB: Rice - Coughlan (r) - White

(19, 0 games) - (19, 0 games) - (19, 0 games)

RK: Pierce - Minchington - Acres
(21, 1 game) - (22, 16 games) - (20, 16 games)

CR: McKenzie - Dunstan - Billings

(20, 9 games) - (21, 46 games) - (20 35 games)

HF: Sinclair - Membrey - Templeton

(21, 25 games) - (22, 20 games) - (20, 14 games)

FF: Lonie - McCartin - Gresham

(19, 24 games) - (20, 13 games) - (18, 9 games)

IC: Murdoch Freeman O'Kearney (r) Saunders (r)

(22, 22 games) - (20*, 0 games) - (19, 0 games) - (21, 22 games)

Em: Payne (r)

(19, 0 games)

* for another month

As a breakdown, there's no one in that side over 50 games. Looking at it in order:

40-49 games
Webster
Dunstan

30-39 games
Billings

20-29 games
Sinclair
Lonie
Membrey
Murdoch
Saunders
Wright

10-19 games
Minchington
Acres
Templeton
McCartin

1-9 games
Goddard
McKenzie
Gresham
Pierce

0 games
Coughlan
Freeman
Payne
Rice
White
O'Kearney

That is an insanely inexperienced group, so anyone saying we're not a young group is being a touch silly. That's 23 of a list of 45 players; 51%

Of that list, if we're being realistic, Payne and Saunders are probably in strife but they're also Rookies, Murdoch and Wright are in the gun next and Minchington would be feeling the heat. Ultimately Templeton has fallen behind a few as well.

Leaving aside the two Rookies, that's a back pocket, a utility defender and two mids that are in danger.

When you add to that the (rest of the) zero gamers, you have another Rookie in O'Kearney, but also two defenders in White and Rice, a key defender in Coughlan and a midfielder in Freeman.

Freeman is a compete unknown at this stage, O'Kearney IMO will make it, and I think the others will too, even if Coughlan is simply depth going forward.

What stands out to me is the lack of classy mids in that side. IMO, that's what we need, and will go for in the draft. The only other thing I see us going for is a clearance mid, particularly when you look at the drop-ins if we go to U25;

Roberton
Carlisle
Weller
Bruce
Curren
Newnes
Ross, and
Longer

Though ultimately we'll probably go best available, the good news is there is a bit of a nexus between that and our needs this year; IMO it's a midfielders draft.

That player is Will Brodie
Or Will Setterfield
Unfortunately we won't get either
