Personally in my top 3.

McCluggage - probably the best balanced mid.
Brodie - excellent inside mid, who will rack up possession and win contests on the inside. 187/189cm height.
McGrath - may end up being better than Brodie. True line breaker, can dodge tackles, strong marking ability and has x factor. Only knock so far is the 179cm height. A lot better than Parish. (Sidenote: has anyone noticed the funny way Parish walks - reminds me of Ross Lyon walk).

hon. mentions, venables (another x factor player), scharenberg. Want to see how WA mids go today. Other players if we drop down might be Taranto, Berry, etc. I really like Taranto - he could be the next Nat Fyfe, if he can transition into a mid. Venables - if McGrath isn't available, he'll be my first choice over someone like SPS. BTW, SPS is a nice player.

Agree with you most part there.
I'd say McCluggage is a lock in there and Brodie is the most bulletproof player in the draft.
Sps and Berry could also push
I think Ainsworth could also go close one of the purely best talents going around

The reason is they'd prefer to pick people from their state to avoid the "go home" factor. There's always development time lost when players leave, so it's better to get the best players. If they can get 3 first round picks from NSW (who want to play for GWS), PLUS on a 20% discount, why wouldn't they!
But if they can nab an SPS or Wil Brodie because they are the better player available at their pick, & they want out in a couple of years, it guarantees that they will get more 1st round picks when they are traded out.

If they can afford to get those guys & also have enough points for their acady kids, why wouldn't they?

I have started to compile my list of players that take my eye, i usually do this until draft time, chopping and changing as i go.

Brandon Parfitt midfield 177cm, 72kg lightning quick, not scared to tackle, is a good mark and can win the contested ball. He has some crazy skills, lots of courage and a great sense of awareness, tends to shank his kicks though, turning it over way too often, maybe its the trying to do too much syndrome.

Will be keeping my eye on him.

I like ainsworth. Kicked bags. A bit small and was also shutdown by McGrath who also rebounded superbly on him (McGarath does have a strong athletic/endurance base on him). Still will be a premium small forward / mid.

I'm basing it off from what I see mainly, like what we all do.

He played mid as a jnr for morwell, I coached against him a couple of times and put a tag on him and he was held.

His x development coach said he wont become a full time mid because he has a attaching mind set and defending doesn't come natural to him. He said to get the best out of him you'd keave him forward and let him snag his 2 goals a week.
Thanks for that, that sort of info adds a lot more weight to an opinion, which is why I was digging to get it. Not everyone here has coached against him or spoken to those who have coached him, I think it's safe to say!

Isn't that the sort of thing that you hear about many/most of the best at that age though ("defending not coming naturally to them")? I mean you hear that all the time and it's generally because they're so good at getting the ball in the juniors and because their team is relying on them getting the ball, that they don't have to worry too much about the defensive side of things. They then get to an AFL club and basically have to be "re-trained" or have defence be a huge focus, until they're doing it to an acceptable degree.

I heard Bomber Thompson talking about Jimmy Bartel recently for instance and he was saying how Jimmy's mother would be in his ear about getting him into the seniors at Geelong early days, because he was totally dominating in the VFL, but Bomber said he wouldn't do so until Jimmy was doing what he wanted him to do (which was defend, not just get the ball himself) and that's why he spent more time in the VFL than many probably thought he should at the time. We're probably doing some similar things with the likes of Acres, Sinclair and Lonie this year and it might be why Billings played down back in that game for Sandy. Defending certainly doesn't come naturally to him.

With defence/pressure/tackling being such an important part of our game plan I reckon Richo could be ideal to coach Ainsworth, as he wouldn't play him until he got that side of things right, which would surely give him the motivation to improve in that regard. His tackling looked top-notch and pretty ferocious yesterday, so he certainly has it in him.

Because all teams including GWS are in the business of trying to win a premiership. The merry go around has always been there because nobody wants to be in Western Sydney. Now that they are in finals window, they would want the successful players who are long term GWS stayers. No better way than to have academy players from WS.

When they started they were doing the go around because of necessity until the stars who stick developed. Their premiership window is 2016-2018.

It's got nothing to do with 'being in Western Sydney'.... You do realise they play their home games at Spotless Stadium yeah? It's a whopping 16km from the city. All the players live in the Inner West which is one of the most vibrant & trendy areas to live in Australia for people under 45. Players want to leave to get more opportunity or they are legitimately homesick, not because it's Western Sydney. The ones playing good regular seniors footy are happy & know they're building something huge.

GWS could end up with 3-4 1st rounders (they already have 2). Tomlinson, Marchbank, Stewart, Steele, McCarthy are all rumoured to want out due to lack of opportunity or homesickness - there's a heap more picks (some players will be traded for future picks of course but not all will)

You really think that if GWS rate someone much higher than an academy player that they won't take them if they're available at their pick?

Of course they would, cos they'll get that gun kid & pick up their academy boys anyway if they've done the math & have the enough points.

If no one has made a bid on a GWS academy kid before the Pies 1st pick (which is theirs), they would probably take Todd Marshall or another gun non-academy kid. You have to remember, every pick is worth an amount of points. Why would they use one of their 'real' picks for an academy kid? They can just sit back & wait for bids & every pick used before a bid makes their academy blokes cheaper & cheaper

Are they still all ( mostly ) living at Breakfast Point?

They're always in Glebe & Balmain, so I'd take a guess & say quite a number have moved over to some of the new developments around there. It's a lot closer to the city too

I thought the whole thing of putting them all at Breakfast Point to start with was inspired. Nice sort of a place to live and by having them all there it would have given them a bit of bonding.

Sanderson kept on raving about Bowes and they also really spoke highly of Mutch and I think it was Perryman, but I do wonder if they might have overrated McCredie.
I'm overseas so not spending time watching games but the highlights of Mutch that I saw before leaving look incredible, he looks so balanced and skilful.

I see him as similar to Devon Smith
Attack on the ball is brilliant

Just finished watching the Vic Country vs SA champs game:

I was looking at kids that would suit our needs and the obvious are McCluggage & Ainsworth. Ainsworth played a half through the middle and looked a class above.

Another VC player who really stood out was tall forward/ruckman -
Esava Ratugolea.

Cant find his height but would have to be at least 198cms and a well built big Fijian wrecking ball. Has been kicking multiple goals for Murray Bushrangers with his largest haul being 8 against Bendigo. He started at full forward and didnt get his hands to the ball whilst marking but his presence and defensive pressure was excellent. When he went into the ruck he reminded me of a young Mumford with his size, presence and agility. Didnt get a lot of it but I was impressed by his presence and effort.

For SA I was impressed with their CHB Brennan Cox 194cms & 90 kgs. Solid mark and kick with reasonable speed and looks composed. Two other light mids with speed and run and carry that caught my eye were Connor Noonan 180 & 72 and Alex VillIs 182 & 70. Both played at speed, had run and kicked the ball well - potential wingmen, would be worthy recruits.

This year is meant to be a very even draft so even if we do trade out our 1st there will be decent players to be plucked further down the order. MIght mean that we have to trade back into the 2nd round at least though?

Daddy don't pick no spuds...
187cm 87kg forward/midfielder with good skills, excellent hands and agility and a solid bit of speed.

Coming from a fair way back, but surely a value pick later in the draft.

Yes please. :thumbsu:

If we finish with pick 9 or 10 it'll make things interesting, I'd look at gaff a lot closer.
But then Eagles will be asking for another first or second.
If we can't get more suitable guys (march/steele, shiel, fitjaeger)
Id much rather two quality kids
