80% of players from WA drafted this year will be from Claremont , South Fremantle and Perth. Marlon Pickett tore West Perth apart on Saturday with his elite - distance precision kicking , and is 1st in line when it comes to mature aged prospects. With Claremont and Perth U18's playing each other next week it will be a game scouts flock to (probably on a Saturday at Arena Joondalup) and on Sunday , South Fremantle will again have all 3 grades in finals (at Subiaco's Leederville ground) and that will allow you to watch Shai Bolton in the colts with English and Pickett barring incident , in the main game. See them with your own eyes !!

So again, seeing as Setterfield is an academy boy, how has GWS jumping in front of Port taken away who would have been available for us?

- Port bid on Setterfield at pick 9,
- GWS match it & take him at pick 9,
- Port then take Taranto at pick 10 who they could have taken anyway at pick 9,
- We then move from pick 10 to pick 11 which hasn't effected those of the non-academy players are still available to us.

Hypothetically, Essendon could bid on Bowes, Setterfield, Perryman, Macreadie, Sproule with pick 1 with all bids matched (if the academy clubs desired of course) & still take Brodie or McCluggage at pick 6.

Hasn't changed which of the non-academy players would still be available to us at our pick, which would now be pick 16.

Also makes no difference if its pick 10 or pick 16 since the other's were always locked away.

Where we could really benefit is if we keep pick 10, GWS keep pick 7 and Gold Coast keep pick 8 and someone from GWS's academy gets bid on before pick 7 (and they match it) and someone like Bowes from Gold Coast gets bid on before pick 8 (and they match it), which means that two of the 9 picks before ours are used on two who probably weren't in the pool for us anyway. Would mean we could get the 8th best non-academy selection, instead of the 9th or 10th.

Spot on mate.

Worry is that Gold Coast will have picks 4, 6 (Prestia) & 8, with GWS having picks 5 (Marchbank maybe?) & 7.

Essendon & Brisbane really need to bid on Bowes with picks 1 or 2.

The more academy kids taken before our pick, the better it is for us as it means that all those picks above for GC & GWS would have been used on their academy blokes & not on the 'open' players that we are able to take

In fact the best strategy for non-expansion clubs is to make a total farce of draft night, and simply name one academy player after another. The only risk is that you could end up with one.

Yeah the Tiges went for 2-3 in a row I think?

Brisbane will bid on Bowes. Lock it in 100%. They will be hoping the Suns dont match as well.

Lee and Shenton have done more than enough to stay on the list but both could look elsewhere if senior games are promised by another club. Carlton, Freo and Brisbane would be looking at both of them if they were smart.

Hypothetically, if we lost both to trade are there any talls that scream "pick me" at #10 or are we going a midfielder all the way? The old "best available" gets tricky when you are middle order and have a little gap to plug...

Bowes is a great pick at #2 but I can't believe the Suns wouldn't match it, pure jet plus the discount

Whispers are the Tigers are trying to keep pick 6 and move there 2017 picks for Prestia

I'd say the opposite. They know they need to go to the draft ASAP to rebuild the list, so paying with future picks means they can start sooner.

Yeah, but they need a complete rebuild, not a half rebuild or a redirection, or what ever they want to call it! The tigers need to go to the draft for 3 years... they need better players all over the ground...

But if they fall further down the ladder, which is quite possible, then it will set any meaningful rebuild back even further. And to me, Richmond need more than one or two top ups even for a mini rebuild. This to me, if true, reeks of coaching intervention into list management which never works out. See Lyon, Watters

Yeah these days with increased player movement you can't afford to bottom out or FAs don't come and players want out. I guess they need to keep rolling before a generation gets old too. They have an okay core but drop off quickly.

yes it is, kid is an absolute freak of nature... played basketball for the majority of his life and football was only for fun until he realised he was a much more realistic chance of making the big time in the sport
Thanks for sharing Mitch.
