Another one for the 'tall(-ish) mid' files....
7. Daniel VENABLES
Ht: 186cm | Wt: 81kg | Western Jets
Venables is a powerful midfielder who can also play in attack. He makes things happen when he is around the ball with his burst from congestion and line-breaking carry. He has averaged nearly five inside-50s a game in his short TAC Cup career. A broken leg last season restricted him to just four games as a bottom-ager but has started the season in good touch with the Jets and PEGS despite a minor knee complaint.

My man Big Bad Bustling Josh Begley has come in at 187cm 87kg; smaller than I was told, but about what he looked to the naked eye, and almost bang on with our own man of the moment Tim 'Skunk' Membrey.
If he can grow an AFL tank, he's around the same size as powerful fwd/mids like Christian Petracca, Koby Stevens, Isaac Heeney and Dusty Martin; handy group that.
A lazy bag of 5 majors has him averaging 4.6 goals per game so far in the TAC Cup and I'm his first two games - playing as a key forward - he's still managed o average 13 possessions at 69% effectiveness.
Not at all shabby.
...................
Another to keep an eye on is Brighton Grammar school captain and Sandy Dragons gun Andrew McGrath. Just a lazy 44 touches and 2 goals on the weekend against Gippsland Power.
View attachment 245236
A 179cm 75kg midfielder, his size isn't ideal, but he came into this weekend averaging an impressive 28.6 touches per game at a whopping 86% effectiveness.
Won the State 400m hurdles title in 2014 as well, so pace and endurance are not an issue.
Kid CAN play.
Fair call, but the previous three weeks prove he's got the goods.I mean no disrespect to the young fella but power are hopeless this year, basically a div 2 side playing 1s.
St Kevins product Tim Taranto is also averaging 26.6 possessions at 73.75% and over a goal per game, despite kicking 0.2 and 1.4 in his last two games. Averages 8 handball receives as well, so he gets involved in chains of possessions.
He's a midfielder, but very dangerous forward of centre and a healthy 186cm 82kg.
I'm told by a very good source that he wins heaps of contested ball between the arcs, and runs a 15+ beep test, but that he isn't quick.
Brodie, Begley, Simpkin, McGrath, Clarke, Taranto, McCluggage, Fowler, Poholke and Venables are the ones I've liked so far this year, and that's just the Victorians.Good to hear a few different names![]()

Yeah, maybe, but I wouldn't expect him to slide far.As soon as I clicked 'post' and re-read I knew a joke was incoming. Damn you Barrels. But seriously, could he be outside the top 15 picks? A bit like Lever maybe?
Yeah, maybe, but I wouldn't expect him to slide far.

Do you see Simpkin as an outside mid or more limited to a small forward?Brodie, Begley, Simpkin, McGrath, Clarke, Taranto, McCluggage, Fowler, Poholke and Venables are the ones I've liked so far this year, and that's just the Victorians.

Wingard-esque role; forward, but runs through the middle.Do you see Simpkin as an outside mid or more limited to a small forward?

I'm told by a very good source that he wins heaps of contested ball between the arcs, and runs a 15+ beep test, but that he isn't quick. Also said that he was more like 188cm 86kg now and likened him to Ollie Wines in style.

, Certainly isn't slow the tarantula, always looks dangerous when he's around the pill. Basketball background as well so he's very good in traffic and a very strong body makes him very handy in the contests.Balic 2.0., Certainly isn't slow the tarantula, always looks dangerous when he's around the pill. Big Tom De Koning is putting on an absolute clinic right now at Shepley Oval.
The Stringrays are up 86 to 29 against the Knights, and he's got 6 to half time!
An underage prospect out of Mt Martha/Padua College, there's absolutely nothing of him - he's 198cm 79kg - but he takes massive pack grabs and is bloody athletic. Takes turns in the ruck on occasion too. Something to think about.
Sounds like something we need! Would you spend our first rounder on him?Wingard-esque role; forward, but runs through the middle.
