List Mgmt. Draft Discussion 2016

I just reckon we have a lot of depth now (with more to come in coming years) and as such, it would have been preferable to improve our chances of getting at least one potential "gun" who will actually get a game in the near future, by getting into the first round, rather than increase our chances of getting someone who is probably more likely to be depth going forward, by holding onto a pick in the mid 30's (as opposed to downgrading it to say pick 50, to enable us to move up from 23 to 15).

Pick 15 is already a crap shoot, I suspect there's a better chance of getting a gun with 23+36 than with 15+50. Don't know how to prove it though!

With pick 15 you're a decent chance to get someone you rank in your top 10 though, whereas with a pick like 23 your chances of doing so are becoming very slim.

If we're already (as I am) struggling to get the likes of Steele, Dunstan, Webster, McKenzie, Lonie, Sinclair and so-on into our team for next year (and with 3 first rounders up our sleeves, plus FA, to add more top-end talent in the next 2 years, to push some of them even further back) I just reckon there's not a high likelihood that whoever we get with pick 36 is going to be playing a meaningful role in our side any time in the near future, hence my preference to have improved our chances of getting someone who might, by upgrading 23.

On the other hand, one thing we might be looking to so with pick 36 is add to our young key position stocks, in which case it might not be such a bad idea to have kept 23 and 36, because they would take a few years to be ready to play anyway.

If we are going to continue to build the Bull Pen? then Powell-Pepper seems like a nice grunt player that may slip through to us.

This kid has my attention more than most others.

If i'm correct above, none of the players we miss out on between 10 and 22/23 are screaming "superstar" so it means we've done absolutely the right thing in making the Hawks trade.

If anyone I would have liked Scrimshaw if hes still there at 10. Other than that you're right couldnt see anyone else.

So who would you pick at 15?

You haven't said who won't be available to me, but it would probably be someone like Florent, Simpkin, or Venebles, who are not expected to be there by 23. Or Logue, if he happens to slide. Maybe even SPP, who for all we know may not be there by 23 either- but probably only if all of Florent, Simpkin and Venebles were gone.

The earlier in the draft you are, the less holes they generally have in their games, hence them being safer bets and more likely to succeed.

I think we're now at the stage where we need to be going quality over quantity and if that means burning a later pick to give us a better chance to get better quality with an earlier one, I'm OK with that.

Absolute opposite. Matho is a figjam flog, Florent is a very mature young man, seems very well liked by his team mates.
He didn't mean it that way. He meant it in terms of being a player who, before the draft, people expected to go high, but that as the draft approaches, he drops further and further down until he becomes a bargain third-rounder.

Whats the deal with macarthy??

I really like him big kick has beautiful flow for a big man!!

If someone gwts him at 45 ill be pissed off. How do we secure him?? Do we get bidding rights to him??

I still think if he gets past North he might be an outside chance. It sounds like Essendon might be keen on battle with their second.

The way i see it we have a very good chance to get SPP at 23, and I think there are enough question marks about Florent and Venables to make me dubious that they would be better than having SPP AND pick 36.

Simpkin MAY be available at pick 15 , is he that top end talent we want?

36 is a god chance for someone like Zac Fisher, Drew, Parfitt.
I'd back the StKilda recruiters to play the numbers game pretty well.

Last year the Saints got White at pick 40. Mathieson was available at 39. This years draft is deeper and flatter.

Simpkin at 36? As in Jy, not Tom or Jonathan? Only way that's happening is if he does his knee or a navicular in between now and the draft!

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on the rest though. I'm all for quality over quantity now and the numbers clearly show that you're a better chance of getting it earlier in the draft.

oops i meant at 15.

did anyone read the afl article on Ainsworth? agree with barrels assessment. one quote in particular where he saw brisbane downgrade to 3 and thought it was for him.

it may well have been but it's a pretty arrogant statement. obviously rates himself!

Interesting to think about Trouts comments on the last road to the draft, when he said something like, 'everyone comes on the night with different lists and everyone walks away happy'.

So last year we got two players in our top 20- with Gresham (7) and White (14).

The year before I think we grabbed 4 players in the top 20, from Emna Q's book, rating both DMac and Lonie in the top 20.

In 2013, we again got 3 players in the top 20, with Billings, Dunston and Acres.

Hopefully this year we can at least grab one or hopefully two in our top 20. I think the team was hoping on turning 23 & 36 into a first rounder but the trade didn't eventuate. I hope that this will actually work in our favour if we can grab 2 top 20s in the draft!

Hoping there are bids on academy kids early so those clubs are not in a position to take non-academy talent. Could determine if there are quality sliders or slim pickings by pick 23.

That's not what he said, he thought it could be where he goes though.
Realistic

I give blood once a week, I work in a soup kitchen for the less fortunate on xmas day, I religously donate thousands of dollars to the heart foundation every single year....

I never ask for anything in return.

All I want is Sam Powell-Pepper and Willem Drew on draft night. Is that too much to ask?

Sounds reasonable to me but you'll need to clear it with the big man upstairs.
