Definitely in the conversation. Unlikely to still be there however. Expected to go 15-20.

Looking forward to see who we get in the draft, I'm pretty sure they will get the best available for each of our 3 picks, also you never know what our team is organizing.
Also can't wait for the season to start, with Steele and Carlisle in the team, with natural improvement from our young guys we should really shake up things next year.

It really makes no difference where our pick ends up as academies and father sons aren't available to us anyway. Probabaly a good thing that clubs will be forced to used picks on them before our picks as it pushes the other kids back to us.

I just look at what happened with Josh Dunkley. If you like "Player A" make a bid on him you never know how the other club feels about them.

They'll both help but Stevens averages around 8 contested possessions a game and Steele averages 5. Steele is young though so too early to write him off as a contested ball beast.

We need a lot to go right if we want to keep bringing in "speedy outside mids" that everyone wants every year. We need Acres to go from averaging 6 to at least 10, Dunstan and Ross to go from 8 to 10 and Armitage to find his 2015 average of 12 at an absolute minimum. If all that happens then we might be alright but I'd much rather keep searching for a 12+ guy. We have enough run, carry and skill guys, what we need is guys who can get it to them.

Agreed. Steele too early to call but I think he will come good. Improvement has to come from within as per what you've said above.

This missing piece has to be the free agent doesn't it? Fyfe, Martin etc, (not that I'm saying we'll get them). I'd like Rory Sloane....

I'm not so sure.
PP wins a bit of it i think ( the best outside mid's win the ball too, I put Joey in that category ), by contrast i've heard Florent described as a "very outside" mid, meaning he doesn't.
Latest rumours are that PP could go earlier rather than later, but i'm not sure who will slide in his place.
Plenty of inside mids in the draft but will they be better extractors or would we simply getting another Dunstan ( which wouldn't help us much ).

One thing to remember is that there are contests all around the ground, and while GWS's best , Coniglio only averages 12 cp's per game, the team as a whole does way better than Carlton who put all their eggs in the Cripps basket. ( even though Cripps averages around 17 a game he can't kick it to himself ).

Looking at a few games.
I see one game where Sinclair was one of the worst but so was Dunstan.
Then the next game , Sinclair won comfortably more of the ball than Ross.
So yeah consistency a factor.

If we're not able to win a lot more contested ball next year with them- and then more again the following year- I'd be very surprised, especially as I'm expecting Armo to bounce back, if he actually has a preseason this time and stays relatively injury-free. Stevens has also shown that when he actually gets to play on ball he consistently wins 10+ (averaged 11 per game for his last 5 full games of 2015- when it looks like he was clearly playing mostly on the inside- and was well on the way to 15 or so (7 from just 24% game time) until he got injured, in the next game (which he didn't return from that year).

We have a shit-tonne of salary cap space and at least 3 first rounders (as of right now) as trade assets for next year's trade period. If in 8-12 months it looks like we still need to add a "contested beast", then surely we throw the kitchen sink at one in next year's trade/FA period, rather than drafting someone who will probably just be another that's no better than those we already have- and probably take 2-4 years to really come on.

What else are we going to spend our huge amount of salary cap space on?

I'd much rather make Jacob Hopper (who had 86 contested to 87 uncontested in his first year and 17 contested in his very first game!) an offer he won't refuse and actually get someone who will probably be our best in the midfield going forward, than draft someone that probably won't be much better than a Dunstan/Steele/Stevens/Ross type (who were all taken/bid on between 15 and 25 in their respective drafts).

That said, I liked Clarke when I saw him play and at least he has excellent endurance (so crucial these days) and there is talk that he's close to 190cm now, so if we drafted him I'd be perfectly happy to have him at our footy club.

SPP of course is one that brings both contested ball winning ability and speed (and endurance, and size, and goalkicking) to the table. Yum.

Just had a look at Zac Fisher, and I like what I see. Small but, he moves well in contested ball packs, seems to be able keep his feet in the tackle, good vision, decent disposal and apparently a solid clearance player. The next Lachie Neale?

There's talk from someone on here who I believe has good contacts that Hopper actually wants to come and play his footy in Melbourne, so he might be the easiest to prise out of there of the lot. There'll be plenty of competition for his signature if he does in fact ask for a trade to a Melb club in 12 months, but very few clubs are in as strong a position to get a trade done and offer him pretty much whatever it will take as we are, so if we really, really wanted him, it would just be a matter of doing what it takes to get it done- as long as it's not crazy overs.

The best thing SPP would bring is that Luke Hodge style grunt and aggression (that f/you jack attitude), which apart from Mav we lack through the midfield. He would make other quiter natured players like Ross, Billings and Sinclair walk so much taller. SPP 15-20 disposals will be as important as a 30 give and go disposal getter, because he will physically hurt the opposition eg Hodge and you cant measure that!

Have watched him play quite a few times , my feeling with the type of kid he is the go home factor is pretty high.

If club wanted a tall quick defender around our pic , I would not hesitate to pick Brennan Cox who whilst being
a South Australian think would be ideal.
